Strength:

GREAT SOUND SEPARATION

Weakness:

SUPER-REMOTE

I JUST BOUGHT THIS RECEIVER LAST WEEK. IT WAS A CHRISTMAS RETURN THAT WAS MARKED WAY DOWN. TOOK ABOUT AN HOUR TO HOOK UP THE DVD, VHS, CD TV ET AL. I WON'T USE MOST OF THE FEATURES OF THE REMOTE, BUT THE BASIC FUNCTIONS WERE NOT THAT HARD. IT IS NOW A DISCONTINUED MODEL BUT WORTH THE PRICE.

Strength:

Many bells and whistles to experiment with, relative ease of use, great selection of soundfields, excellent digital sound.

Weakness:

Too many setting and adjustments.

I must say, I am very happy with the STR-DE845. Units that I have purchased in the past never had enough "punch" for me, but I think that I may have solved that problem. I have never had to turn it up past .4 or .5 to rock the house. I watched "Gladiator" this weekend and the experience was the closest to a movie theatre that I have ever experienced at home. The clarity from rear digital sound is a vast inmprovement over Prologic. I have combined it with a new Sony DVD and the experience is really cool. I can see that I am hooked on 5.1 and can never go back.

Strength:

Excellent Separation; Separate DSP for thater-surround modes; Great DD/DTS Decoding; Lots of power; Sufficient (almost) hook-up options

Weakness:

Minor: Absence of dedicated digital input for CD players; heat build-up

Great receiver - excellent in all respects. My only complain is that I have had to hook up both my DVD player and CD player to the "DVD/LD" digital coaxial and digital optical inputs respectively. However, this is not a problem because I have set the input source for "DVD/LD" to "Auto-detect" which does a nice job of selecting the correct input from whichever is active (DVD or CD changer). Also, keeping the edges about six inches from each side does help in dissipating some of the heat. I am one very happy owner of the STR-DE845 - good job, Sony.

Strength:

Love the seperation during DVD movies, Cool remote control, nice looking unit.

Weakness:

The unit does get hot at times even when the volume is set at a low increment

I had problems (Big Time) with the Aiwa and Pioneer Receivers before I opted for the Sony. I am still impressed with the unit overall, for the price that I paid. It is a great investment for someone venturing into the world of Home Theater. I plan to keep it around until I can get into some THX Certified components. After seeing the other reviews in here I will invest in a small fan to keep the unit from overheating.

Strength:

Great Value in this mid sized Av reciever.

Weakness:

Remote unit a bit daunting for some! including me...

I purchased this reciever september last year in Sydney Australia. After comparing other units with similar or more features, I couldn't say no.
For a mid sized reciever it does have good output..(I wish I had the chance to really crank the volume up!! alas, have only had it about the 11:00 position on the vol control and that got me a nasty noise complaint in the mail)
Being a musician, I reckon I'm a little bit fussy when it comes to audio components, and I think out of all the amps/recievers I have owned over the years, this is a very good, value for money unit.
Good on you Sony, The STR-DE845 is certainly a winner.

Casual Listener

Strength:

Sony reliability

Weakness:

Lack of volume light; Overly complicated Remote

Due to serious pricing error I was proud to bring home this new baby to an irrate girlfriend.

I'm glad that I didn't splurge on the ES series; this is sufficient for the casual listener. Adding to that, it took me and a friend 2 nights getting this thing set-up.

Some of the beefs I have with this receiver are:

- No volume light on the volume control. I've read other people's reviews that they "listen with their ears and not with their eyes". My biggest problem with this is that during a lull in a DVD you wonder if its loud enough? Then you get blasted with 100 dbs!

- Remote control can lauch the space shuttle. Far too complex to be useful to anyone! It carries 21 buttons on the face of the controller, then a pseudo flip-phone piece of plastic opens to reveal another 29 useless buttones. One good feature is its capability to work every piece of electrical appliance in your house down to the toaster.

- 27 Sound fields. I guess this sounds great to the enthusiast but to the casual listener I've only ever used 6. By the way, what is the advantage of: Analog Direct; Semi-C EX A-C; Mono Movie; Church; Arena; Stadium; and Game. I always understood that things are great in Digital and 5.1, not mono or in a hockey rink.

- No auto-detect feature. I would love to turn on the receiver, press "TV" and my Sony TV comes on. Similarly with the Sony DVP-S360 DVD player; just press "OPEN" on the DVD player and the reciever come on set to "DVD".

Now for the PROS:

- Great bang for your buck. I like the fact that you can get a reliable product for under $500. I hope, as in the case of my other Sony equipment, I'll never have to abandone it to a garage sale or the repair shop becuase it's gone to crap! My parents are still watching their 25 yr old Sony TV.

- Provides exceptional power in DTS and DD 5.1 to the PSB speakers.

Strength:

Great Price for the options.

Weakness:

Cuts off in Dolby Digital.

I have owned this item for 4 months and sence the begining I have had a problem with it cuting off in the Dolby Digital mode, At first I hought it was my 5.1 DSS but I exchanged it and it continued to cut off. Then it cut off in the DVD mode. I called Sony and thay said thay have never hurd of the problem and to change the cables, I'm using Monster Optical so it was not that, Sears came out and didn't even turn the rhing on or look at it. He just aid to returne it to the store. I took it t Sears and thay said Thay wouldn't have any more in untill July and to live with it untill then. I did some resuch on my own and I have came to the resulation that the Dolby Didgtil is geting hot and a saftey module in it is cuting the Dolby Digital off.Not Cool whin your trying to impress your Buds.
