It has been 3 months now since I purchased this receiver and I thinkit is the best sounding receiver out there. I have had no problems
whatsoever with this receiver. I have it connected to my DVD and my 220 CD
player through fiber optic and it sound EXCELLENT!!

I recommend this receiver to anyone who wants crisp clear digital theater sound.

Strength:

* Nice user interface.
* Nice remote.
* Decent sound for the price (two years ago).
* Has both Dolby Digital and DTS decoding.

Weakness:

* No S-video inputs or outputs (later Sony models have
S-video inputs and outputs).
* Only one coaxial digital input.
* Equalizer/cutoff settings are primitive. The lowest
supported bass crossover is 100Hz, which is annoying if
you have full-range front speakers that can handle
lower frequencies (instead, the receiver sends those to
the sub). You can get around this by turning on the sub
only during movie playback (not music).
* I could do without most of the sound fields (they sound
gimmicky).
* Measured current/voltage output for left and right front
speakers, was too far off, causing a slight but
noticeable balance problem between right and left. This
seems pretty much par for the course for Sony receivers
(but haven't tried their top of the line ES).
line with what other people

All in all, not a bad receiver for the time. I would not buy it again, in fact, I consider it to be the weak link in my system (I have good quality components).

Strength:

remote, display

Weakness:

THD, sony cinema modes with 32 bit prosessing are never used, excessive hiss in the rear

It was a nice change at the time to move up from an old stereo reciever to DD and DTS reciever. I was amazed at all the inputs and outputs but, the real catcher were all the sound fields that it contained by I only used two. The Digital Cinema Sound fields are rarely used and sound crappy through the 32-bit processor. No problem with heating and still happy with it. Considered Onkyo but at the time Onkyo did not come with DTS yet, but I think I will Keep the 925 through college.

Strength:

DSP is fun and useful, plenty of power and inputs.

Weakness:

Limited remote, poor ergonomics

I have had the DE925 for almost a year now and have really enjoyed this product. The unit is large and tends to get hot if left on for long time periods, but it has never shut down. I am currently shopping around for a good speaker match for this reciever and will post another review when I get my 5.1 system up and running. Good job Sony.

i replaced my pioneer with the 925 . best thing i ever done ! the 925 is loaded with features and the sweetest remote . as a former sony basher i have to admit i was leary of buying a sony product . but since then i have bought the sony cdp-300 cd player and plan on getting the sony 7700 dvd player ( my pioneer dv-414 is a problem child ) .i use this unit day and night and it's never shut down or lost it's sound . the unit is in a entertainment center with a 4 inch gap above it without a fan . my next move will be th ES line since pioneer can't match the sony products . more digital inputs would be nice but i bought the 925 about 3 weeks before the 935 came out , so i'll have to deal with that . i have become a sony fan 4 life now

Seth,
No wonder why you had problems with the receiver it looks like
you were trying to look for a deal and wound up with used or remanufactured
receivers. Can you point out where this information came from
that said that this receiver was so defective.

I have not had any problems whatsoever with my receiver, it sounds just as
good if not better than any higher priced receiver.

Strength:

DTS!!!!! AT THE TIME. MULTIPLE TOSLINK INPUTS.

Weakness:

CLIPPING WHEN SWITCHING ON IN D.D.

I've read some reviews that state that this is a "problem child." The heat, the hiss, and the sound quality. First, lets just say that this unit was produced in 1998 and 99; so of course there are better units out there now! It is 2001!! I've used it for 2 years now and I've had no problems with it. Like any receiver, I keep it in a well ventilated area(heat is the niumber 1 killer of any A.V. product). Second, for those complaining of surround sound hiss, try adjusting the equalizer section(it is most extensive);or for once reading your manuals. Once adjusted properly to your room with a sound pressure meter, you will see a difference. And third, as far as sound quality goes; well this is not top of the line quality, but its no where near low quality either. Sound quality starts at the receiver, but doesn't end there. check out the level of your connections , cables, cable runs(very important), and of course: your speakers.
I"ve used this receiver many times to show what DTS is, and have sent many a friend home to think about buying a new receiver because of it!! Until you've heard DTS disc in a good setup, well i guess you won't believe theres a difference. There is!!!!!
One last thing on this receiver or any receiver at or above this price range; take the time to read about everything it can do and make the necessary adjustments for the enviorment that its in. You've spent this much money so get the most of it!!! I will not get rid of this receiver until it "GIVES UP THE GHOST."

Strength:

Powerful sound, excellent digital transfers, four optical outs, nice features; to sub outs

Weakness:

Heats up,

I first had an onkyo amp which I was no doubtley ripped by Surround sound. The told me it was a good amp and powerful and when I purchased it it was the most dullest amp I've ever heard. So I took it back which they gave me no refund so I sold it and Bought the sony for a quater the price. The sony when I put it on was clear loud, and It matched my speakers fantastically. The Dts also sounds great. All I can say that this amp is a 10/10.

Strength:

Still running strong

Weakness:

None, although had to have a center channel transistor replaced 18 months ago.

This receiver in no way compares to my 777 ; having said that, for a first surround system or a bedroom system the 925 does an admirable job. Don't worry about what is remarked about the heat of the Sony's- As far as I can tell, this is normal for them. Craig
