Strength:

Flexible configuration, great ergos, excellent features for the cost, works great!

Weakness:

users should have a brain bigger than a hamster to fully utilize this unit, works best with other sony components.

I have purchased 18 different sony products in the last 10 years and have NEVER had a problem with any unit. The remote could use backlit buttons and illumination for the aux panel but otherwise works great. CD memo with a sony jukebox is very handy! Excellent sound and very versatile audio setup. Next a sony Wega!!

Strength:

Full featured product and great looking ergos

Weakness:

Remote does take some time to figure, but does look cool.
Beam me up Scotty! heheh

I just got the reciever for a week now and so far no problems. Real impressed of the quality of sound it produces. For about 300 bucks from CC, I was expecting mediocre quality. Anyways, no problems, regrets, or anything negative about it. Then again, its only been a week. I'll post an update as to how the unit is doing after a month or so. Since I don't have an enclosure cabinet, but an open one, I don't expect any heat issues poping up. We'll see! :)

NONE THAT I CAN SEE:

I have been reading some of the comments that these so call HI-FI experts have been saying about the Sony DD/DTS Receiver STR-DE935. I purchase one through Cruthfield about a little over a month ago. I had a Pioneer VSX-906S in which I though was the best sounding Dolby Digital Receiver that I have heard. The Sony Receiver blows away the Pioneer Receiver. The soundfield for Dolby Digital and DTS Surround Sound is outstanding. I have the following system hooked up to my receiver.
1- Cerwin-Vega VS-150 Speakers (2) Front Speakers
2- Cerwin-Vega VS-120 Speakers (2) Rear Speakers
3- Technics SB-L95 Center Speaker
4- Sony DVP-S7700 DD/DTD DVD Player
5- Definitive Technology PF18TL Powered Subwoofer with 18" Woofer.
6- Definitive Technology PF15TL Powered Subwoofer with
15" Woofer
7- Pioneer Laser Disc Player Model CLD-D406 AC-3RF
8- Technics Mega CD Changer Model SL-MC7
9- Sony DD/RF Demodulator Model MOD-RF1 for decoding Dolby Digital AC-3 from Laser Disc to Receiver:
As your can see from the above that I have a awesome Dolby Digital/DTS Home Theater System. All of my speakers are large speakers. The crap that I read about some of these readers that are saying that this receiver is not worth the money. They are wrong. I have the DVD movie Saving Pvt. Ryan both on Dolby Digital and DTS. Gentleman the sound from this receiver is better than at the movies itself. This receiver is a quality receiver. I would recommend it to any one who wants to purchase one. I rate the receiver five stars.

Strength:

110Wx5 power, SWEET remote, easy to set up, optical and coaxial digital inputs.

Weakness:

None I have found.

This receiver rocks. I love the Dolby Digital and DTS inputs, the remote just kicks it with style. Being able to name functions and have CD naming on the backlit remote is awesome. The receiver is a breeze to set up. Anyone complaining about the remote either didn't read the manual, or just don't know what they are doing. It is EASY. 5 stars all the way.

Very cool receiver, great sounding. 110Wx5. Sweet 2-way remote also.

One great receiver. It really sounds good on DVD's when turned up loud. Also sounds good playing quietly at night.
I like how functions and CD's can be named on both the receiver and remote. Got it for $299 brand new.

Strength:

Lots of inputs, flexible outputs, plenty of power, remote macros.

Weakness:

Remote operation and programming - esp. the scrolling feature.

This is my first home theater receiver. I haven't even filled out my speakers (no sub, no center), but I'm VERY happy. I received a DVD player for Chirstmas and, through a mistake at Best Buy, I bought this receiver as an "Open Box Buy" with no parts missing or cosmetic problems for $299 (good luck finding one for that price).

As I flipped through the manual, I was exstatic to continue finding features that I was not expecting to be able to afford (and I couldn't afford it's $499 shelf price). I was glad to see the Dolby Digital AND DTS decoding, but was thrilled that it also had 5.1 inputs. That allows me the flexibility to add a seperate, possibly higher quality DD decoder or add a decoder for the 'next' 5.1 surround sound scheme. I'll probably own this receiver for several years to come.

As for the remote, it does take some getting used to. I'm still not sure of all the capabilities. It does, however, control my Pioneer CD player, Panasonic DVD, JVC VCR, and General Instrument cable tuner without a lot of hassle in the setup - just select it from a list. The up-down scroll/select button takes a little getting used to. I really wish I could customize/reorganize the component list.

The macro feature is heaven sent. I dreaded the thought of trying to get my wife to memorize the seven steps it would take to setup and use the DVD player. I just programmed the commands to turn on the VCR, select the aux input, turn on the TV & Cable Tuner (switched outlet), turn on the DVD player, power on the receiver, and select the DVD input into the remote and all she has to do is select "Macro1" and she's on her way.

I'd give this receiver a 5 EASY if $299 was its regular price. I'm giving it a 4, however, because I'm not sure how it compares in the $500 price range.

Compared to my previous receiver (a 12-year-old Sherwood receiver with Matrix surround), I like the sound.

Strength:

All the digital/analog and S-Video inputs, Dolby Digital decoding, remote (yes), 110W x 5, ease of use. 2nd ch output

Weakness:

I feel that it gets hot, TV/SAT input has no S-Video, No preouts (except subwoofer)

The receiver has met most of my needs, with the exception that the TV/SAT did not have the S-Video input. I like the remote, and am able to control all of my AV equipment with it. The digital inputs makes it easy to record music from CD's to minidisk(MDSJE520) effortless, as well as anlog recordings from my turntable (Technics SLQL1-over 15 yrs old) to MD with analog connections. An active Subwoofer is a must with DVD. Movies played from my DVPC600D (optically connected) are crisp and clean. Overall, an excellent unit for the price(Paid $347 total)and 2 year warranty, but am considering the STRDA555ES.

Strength:

Plenty of power, cool remote, LOADED with options, good value.

Weakness:

Runs very HOT, Equalizer is a pain to set up

For the price and being a lower end unit I think this is a great unit. I'm no audiophile at all but I'm learning about and getting into higher end stuff and there IS a difference. The Good: I personally loved the remote. If you can't figure it out, you don't need to be buying a reciever w/ all the options this one has. The reciever puts out plenty of power. It is loaded w/ options. Multi room out, 27 DSP modes, you name it this reciever has it. If you are going to stay w/ lower end speakers and equipment I highly reccomend this reciever. However, after I bought it I started looking more closly at specs. It advertises .09 THD but thats only in 2 channel stereo mode. In surround mode (what I bought it for) it has .8% THD. That's alot of distortion. Any reciever by pioneer, kenwood, etc in this price range will have the same distortion. The sony ES series has clean, discrete ES amps. They have only .05% THD in both stereo and surround mode. Onkyo, Yamaha, etc, are comparable to the ES series. I sold my 935 after 3 months and bought a 555 ES. I just got it but I sounds alot better. If nothing else I would reccomend the 80 Wx5 333 ES which is only about $100 more than the 935. The DB930 is in between the 935 and 333ES. But that's just me. I think sound quality is one the most important features in a reciever. I'll let you decide what's important to you. For the price I give it an easy 5. Because of the EQ, non ES amps, and it running hot I give it a 4 over all.

Strength:

Packed with features, 32bit Processing, 5 year warrenty, can use 2, 4, 5, 5 w/ Sub speaker setups and clean sound reprodution. 110 Watts per channel @ 550 Watts total output.

Weakness:

The 3 Op amps that drive the main Amps NEED heat sinks (they run very hot, it will reduce some noise when cooler), along with the Digital board's power transitors... they share a single copper plate for a heat sink. I've rerouted the internal cables, added more twists to the cables to clean up any background noise and added ferrite cores to the cables. The remote is a bit much for the average user.
Adding a thin (3 1/2" x 1/2" wide) AC fan to the power amp's heatsink will keep things cool for high demands... some Kenwoods have a setup like that. This is just for my needs, as for the average Joe, needs not to make any changes. (All systems run HOT, because of the design of the unit, small and inclosed... this has more room to work with than most.)

This AV receiver sounds great with any speaker (cheap, old , or new & over priced) the electronic weaknesses can be fixed by yourself ($30.00) or by someone qualified to do so. I've added 4 Radio Shack STS-830 speakers and set the Treble +3db @ 8Khz and the Base +3db @ 250Hz on the receiver. The next Sony product I plan on buying after Christmas is a CDP-DE333ES (300 CD player).
At $500.00 the price is right for what you get, some offer there name as part of the cost, well if that's so, Sony is a bargen for performance and quality.

Powerful sound, nice design, easy to use.

Weakness:

Heat.

I upgraded this model from the STR-635 and was amazed at the difference. I only use headphones and it gives me nice surround and good deep bass. It also has a lot of options to choose from so it is great for people like me who like to toy around with options.
