Strength:
Connections, remote.
Weakness:
None found so far I upgraded to this receiver after using the STR-635 for 3 months. I was instantly impressed. There are far more connections on this unit than the 635. The remote is very convenient also. I wish that it would control my Dishplayer, but that's ok. |

Strength:
Inputs for everything...optical audio outs...and lots!
Weakness:
Remote is useless. Well this is truly a step up from my 725. DTS is added as well as more optical outs...not just one! You'll be hard pressed to find a receiver with all these bells and whistles at this price. While I've only owned it for a few days, my first impression is positive. Great, clear, crisp sound. I used Saving Private Ryan (DTS) as my first test material. Wow! Great highs...great lows...great separation. More tests to follow and I'll keep you posted. Similar Products Used: STR-DE725 |

Strength:
Flexability in sound fields,power
Weakness:
remote confusing to learn, only 2 s-video jacks Just purchased this past weekend and so far am pleased ,was considering Yamaha and Pioneer recievers,Pioneer seemed cheap and Yamaha did not have sufficiant power, overall have been happy so far, would like more s-video inputs and a remote that does not need a degree in rocket science to understand, have not had rear speaker noise problems so far as others have stated, for the price a good overall reciver for a inexpensive home theater system |

Strength:
Power, number of inputs including optic, remote (I like it!)
Weakness:
Setting up the sound fields. I've only had it for a few days but it seems pretty good so far. I have connected my DSS receiver and CD player to the optic inputs and it worked flawlessly. My one big gripe so far is the fact that unless I'm watching a true Dolby Digital movie (and there is only one on all of the DSS channels tonight!) I can't get the freakin' rear surround sound speakers to come on??? I've tried everything I can think of to no avail. My music CDs and 99% of the movies only play through the front two speakers or the front two and the center if I select Dolby Pro Logic. On all of the other receivers I have had, it has been easy to get the rear speakers to play... even if it was just a simulated signal going to the rears. Oh well, I'll play some more and try to figure it out! Other than I can't get the rears to play for 99% of the music/movies out there, it seems pretty good :) Similar Products Used: Pioneer VSX-9700S, D3S |

Strength:
Two way lit screen remote, dot matrix screen on receiver, great power for medium sized speakers, ability to ajust the EQ with the remote, asignable names for all of the radio stations and the ability to read them from the remote
Weakness:
No binding posts for the center and rear channels, the remote can be a little slow, too many usless echo oops I mean soundfields, I love this receiver! I chose it over other receivers costing hundreds of dollars more that did not offer the same features as this one did. There is a lot of talk about the heat but trust me guys I would take a hot amp over a loud intrussive fan any day. It is the little things that count. like the fact that there is a high quality switch for speaker selection A,B off and what not, as appossed to the cheap push buttons found on other receivers. I use two sub woofers in my system so the duel sub output is perfect for me. There is an output for a small headphone sized wire that is on a lot of receivers these days that allows better control over other Sony products but when I purchaced my Sony DVD player I was surprised to find that the player had no port to hook up this wire! Come on Sony what gives!? Probably the biggest deceiding factor for me with this receiver is the three way EQ verses the so called bass and treble on other receivers. It is ajustable in frequencies from 100hz to 10,000hz your individual settings are rememered by the receiver for EACH imput! All of this is easly controlled by the remote from your listening chair where it should be. I have no major problems with the 935 and I feel that I would only upgrade to another when ither a true discrete digital 6.1 or 7.1 sound is developed or I purchace another piece of equipment besides my digital tv that requiers componet swiching. As is I have my DVD player routed directly to my television. The Sony 935 is a great bargin and I highly recamend this receiver! Similar Products Used: Teac AG-V8060 |

Strength:
excellent sound reproduction both in music and home theater
Weakness:
no S video input for the sat/dbs If only sony would of put an S video input in this receiver for the satellite it would of been a 9 out of a possible 10. It is even more confusing since they had the foresight to include optical input for the sat/dbs but for some silly reason left out the s video. The did correct this "oversight" in the str-de 945. |

Strength:
Amount of features, 2-Way Remote, 2nd Room Output, Ability to adjust audio features according to speaker placement/size, Soundfields (I think there are 27!)
Weakness:
The 2-Way remote can be slow sometimes; doesn't have optical digital input for CD player; not enough S-Video hookups. This component is fabulous! Other than my complaining about the S-Video and optical digital output shortages, I think this reciever rocks. Similar Products Used: Other Sony Receivers (previous models), Sony CD player |

Strength:
high power, the remote (yes the remote), crisp sound great dts sound, plenty of goodies
Weakness:
ive had it for a year and its perfect well im pretty much an expert at this stuff but dont hav alot of expierence since im still in middle school. Before this reciever i had another sony reciever that was good but i needed somthing better. when i saw this one in crutchfield well it was for $600, but i knew crutchfield was a rip of on everything so i knew a friend that works for sony and i got it for 350. it is packed with everything u can need. Now so many people put down the remote cuz its "to hard to understand". that to me sound pathetic cuz im alot yuonger than these guys and i got it in a day. the power of this baby is amazing 110x5. dd and dts is great with movies for dvd and hi fi vcr. Now i figured that if i played it loud it would get distorted but it held strong through very high levels. it has great bass. this is the equiptment i got : Similar Products Used: sony ht somtin or watever |

Strength:
3 optical inputs, 1 optical output/ digi-coax in; 5.1 decoder
Weakness:
Not the most user-friendly interface/remote; slow reaction-time Made the move from Dolby Pro Logic to Digital 5.1. Good choice. I wouldn't make the move to DVD w/out getting yourself a subwoofer and a good Dolby 5.1 capable receiver like this one. I paid about $400 for this model. Really like the optical out to my CD burner. I'm running my Onkyo DV-S525 DVD player via digital coax to the receiver (as opposed to an optical cable, based on Sony's suggestion for HT) and it sounds awesome. Sound fields are fun and there are many ways to manipulate the sound (both in movies and with music sources). The remote is a challenge, but with a little focus and common sense (the manual is mostly useless), you can do almost anything with it. In fact, it controls my remote-less Sony CD player AND tape deck (though it doesn't control on/off to either). The receiver is fairly slow - takes a good 5-10 seconds to fully power up- and a few seconds to change inputs; even slower when you factor the remote. Problems aside, this thing has plenty of power and all the inputs I'm looking for. Paired with my Kef C40's and 15" Cerwin-Vega sub, the stereo sound quality is very clean. The surround, via Infinity SM-105's,is significantly less clean (CHECK THE SPECS!), but I've detected no hiss or noise, other than in the soundfields. A smart, very functional machine; perfect for a full-scale entry level home theater. Similar Products Used: Sony STR-AV1070 |
