Strength:

numerous soundfields, amplifier power, everything about receiver

Weakness:

remote is slow but expected since it is two way

I have not had a digital receiver until this one and now I wish I had not waited so long. Out of the box, it only took about 20 min to hook up and setup without ever looking at manual. I used my Sony DVD for my first test. I watched Supernova and I was blown away. There were sounds coming from my speakers that I had never recognized before and added to the overall experience. The sound was perfect and never muffled or too shrill. Provided just the right balance of sound. My recommendation is if you don't need the ES series from Sony, buy the STR-DE945. You won't be disappointed but only surprised at what you get for your money which I thought was a great buy.

Strength:

Great Power, # Optical Inputs, multiple sound fields, sleek design ect...

Weakness:

Mine burned my hand it was so HOT. A little crackle in my receiver. Warm, my azz this thing is the gateway to satans land. If you have expirienced this please email me and tell me the receiver you chose in its stead. thank you

I got home and set up this receiver and I was totally blown away at the clarity of the stereo output at the volume level. I really liked everything that I paid my money for. I was listning to music like never before--because of this receiver, this is now a new hobby of mine. I was so impressed with the sound quality and so happy with my purchase. Then I went over to it because I remember that some of the reviewers were complaining about the heat, I touched the top of it and OH MY GOD! THIS THING WAS BLAZING HOT!!! I have not had any problems with it yet because of this but I did start to hear a slight crackle in the sound. For those people who are mad at me for writting this, I do not know what to say to you. Imagine waiting 4 weeks to receive this and now have to send it back at my cost. I am pretty upset. As for the people whos receiver is working properly...congratulations, I am sure that you are enjoying what I am not. Next time I will not waste my time with semi low-grade stuff, I will just buy the high quality stuff. If I pissed anyone off I really dont care you should not be worried about reading any more of these, you should be listining to your music and watching your DVDs. The bottom line is Ill bet when this receiver is working it is awsome! And for you english majors out there who really give a crap whether or not someone spelled their critiques wrong-----Get A F*****G Life!!!!

Strength:

Sounds, Easy Hookup, Sound Features

Weakness:

None Yet

I'm currently using my receiver with a DVD Player, Klipsch Center Channel (KSC-C1), Front and Rear Klipsch Quintet Speakers, and a Klipsch Subwoofer (KSW12).

The sound is fantastic, the features for the sound are great, from normal surround sound to staduim sound. I'm truely glad I've made the purchase so far. My receive doesn't get hot like a lot of people have posted.

The remote control can be confusing, but after playing with it, it's fairly easy to move around with the display.

Maybe after a few monthes use my mind will be different. But so far, it's a keeper.

Strength:

Ample amounts of inputs and outputs, fantastic sound quality, awesome remote, great looking and POWERFUL!

Weakness:

Remote buttons could be brighter, manual could be more specific on features.

For the money, its a great receiver....plenty of power, great looks and sound. Tone adjustments for each individual speaker is a nice feature. The remote looks like a Star Wars phaser....buttons could stand to be brighter though. Overall...I give it 5 stars for price and value...can't complain!

Strength:

The power on this thing is definitely incredible. I use my older Sansui, floor-standing speakers, and they sound great. The speakers themselves are able to pump out around 250 watts each. Sometimes I think they are about to BLOW. A lot of bass is certainly getting through with this receiver.
The remote is also pretty cool. I like the whole "download" thing it has. I think it's easy to use you just have to be a little patient.
The price was well appreciated.

Weakness:

It does make a little noise, The remote does take a little while to get started, and it may tend to get a little hot.
It does make a little noise, the remote does take a little while to get started, and it may tend to get a little hot.
But what people way not realize or know is the amount of ohms you may use. (less ohms - more heat!)

When I was trying to decide weather or not I should spend around 500 dollars on my new receiver, I was doing a lot of comparing. Now that I did buy it I am very pleased. I listen to it every day and use the sleep timer at night. My girlfriend and I are getting a house and this is definitely going to go great with my new Sony Wega TV.
Just one question!
Does anyone know if it would be a good choice to get a Bose acustimas 6 surround sound package to go with it? I haven’t had a chance to listen to both at the same time and see.

Weakness:

Slow response from remote control

This is a great receiver, I've been testing for almost 3 months. First, I borrowed one from a friend of mine, tested it and it convinced to buy it.
I have 5 JBL speakers with no sub-woofer. I'd like to ask everybody, if someone knows, for this receiver in particular, where do the low frequencies go when you don't have a sub-woofer? To the front speakers, or to all of them?
If someone answers, thank you very much...

Weakness:

Just 1 coax audio input

Couldn't be more pleased - although I was ripped off by Circuit City - should have done more homework.

I got around the single coax problem by purchasing a Coax to Optical converter for my Digital Cable Box - works great.
The delay reported in using the 2-way remote is exaggerated. There is only a delay when the remote "wakes up" and communicates with the box. Once it is in the right mode - the remote is very responsive.

An S-video input in the front to go along with the RCA inputs there would have been nice too.

Setup:
STR-DE 945 receiver
JBL N38 fronts
Some cheap sony rears (for now)
Polk cs245 center
A low end Aiwa subwoofer (for now)

Weakness:

only one COAX input

Hello...
I am trying to connect the digit audio output on my digital cable box (Scientific-Atlanta Explorer 3100) to the DVD Coax input on my STR-DE945. I have the following configuration:

- DVD optical and S-Video plugged into TV/SAT (because of the single COAX in available)
- TV/SAT label change to DVD/LD
- Digital cable box COAX (digital audio) plugged into TV/SAT COAX digital input
- DVD/LD label change to TV/SAT

When I set the input mode on DVD/LD (which is really my Cable box) to Digital Coax, I get the message "Unlock" on the front display of the unit. There is no audio. If I set to Auto, I only get the analog signal.
I can find no reference to "Unlock" in the manual. What am I supposed to Unlock????

Any help would be appreciated.

Strength:

Good price for the options and quality

Weakness:

None found so far.

This is less of a review than a thank you to Nick from NY. I had purchased the STR-DE945 the day before for $420. After reading about Sears doing a price match with the net I ended up paying $350 for the same thing. Thanks
