Strength:

Ample digital inputs and outputs; sufficient power

Weakness:

Remote control; protection fault problem

In a two month time frame, I'v have two of these units. I am now in the process of returning the second unit for an Onlyo TX-DS787. The remote contol was the problem with both units. 8 out of 10 times, if I turn the unit on with the remote, I would receive a "protection fault" and had to turn the unit off manually. The second remote (US-104) on both units did not work at all. I finally purchased Sony's universal remote ($200.00) which worked fine. Problem is, I should not have had to spend another dime on an already "retail" $1300.00 unit to get it to work properly. If you can get beyond the remote/protection fault problems, the unit sounds and performs great.

Strength:

Clean sound, ES quality, remote

Weakness:

No lights on volume dial.

I'm sure impressed with this receiver. The remote is easy to use even though it's kinda cumbersome and ackward to hold. The sound is what impressed me the most. It delivers good clean sound at very high volumes without distortion. Highly recommended for 5.1 and DTS. With all the sound field adjustments this unit provides, you can "dial in" your sweet spot pretty easily. I've seen that some reviewers have had problems with heat and protection shut-downs. I haven't encountered any problems at all. I know of several other people that own this unit and they too have had no problems. I compared many others to the 555es and they all fell short in both sound quality and build. Shop around and hear for yourself. Take care!

I have the str-da777es and for the first tow days of use i was afraid it would burst into flames. it would sizzle at zero volume. I even bought a fan at radio shack; no help. finally, do not know why, I set it to 4 Ohms. never again have I had it get hot again. the loss of ten watts is not even noticeable.

Strength:

flexability,sound

Weakness:

remote could be good, but is difficult to navigate. Lack of discrete 6.1

I have had the unit for several months now and maybe due to pure luck according to some other reviewers, have experienced no heating, unexpected shutdown, quality control, or hiss issues. In fact, I hear absolutley no hiss standing in front of my speakers (Definitive BP2000 fronts and BP 10 rears). Listening to SACD's,DVD's, or regular CD's is a pleasure with my 9000ES hooked up to this unit. I looked at, listened to, but never had in my house the Denon 5800. I probably would have purchased Denon had I not intended at some time in the near future to go with separates in this system. (I have multiple systems set up in the my house)I just did not believe that the Denon, even with its 6.1 and additional power, was worth the extra expense. I could be wrong. I am not crazy about the remote. It takes too many steps to go from menu to menu. Just for the record, I have absolutely nothing to do with Sony, the electronics industry, or any retail stores. I just like music and home theater. I like to try new and different products, sometimes they are winners (like the Dalquist DQ10's that I will keep forever), or a Pioneer receiver (non-Elite)that I passed to my daughter.

Strength:

Remote, Amp section, DTS, build quality

Weakness:

Remote,

Yes the Remote belongs in both catagories, why if you want to bring this reciever home and more or less "plug and play" it is not going to happen. You Pay enough for this stuff and people do not take the time to learn how to use it. Everyone I spoke to enjoys the remote and its abilitys if they take the time. The DTS decoder works percectly and the Amp section is strong and true in all 5 channels

Everytime I post something here about the future of the V555ES it is taken off. I don't understand it. I just am trying to find out the future of the replacement receiver coming down the pike. For some reason someone on this sight doesn't like that. If someone of you out there has knowledge of the upcoming SONY STRVA555ES PLEASE LET US KNOW! I am sure that many of us who own 555ES receivers would like to know how they have improved their recievers, since there are soo many upset owners. Lets see how long this post lasts.....

Thank you,

Jim

Strength:

Lots of hookups, decent sound

Weakness:

Defect Ratio

After purchasing a Denon 3300 as my first "high-end" receiver, I had to return it 2 weeks later because it kept overheating. Because they didn't have any more 3300's, I decided to upgrade to the Sony V555ES. The product looked and sounded great, but was a pain to set up. About 2 months after getting it, the output from Speaker set A died. I switched it to B and it worked fine. About 8 months after that, the output of B died. I've been trying to get Sony and the distributor to send a replacement, but now I'm told they don't sell the V555ES anymore.
I would say this has been the biggest lemon I've ever purchased and I'm going to stay away from Sony A/V products from now on.

Strength:

Great design, solid platform

Weakness:

reliability, multiple repairs

I purchased this receiver Sept 2000 and it worked great until a hot summer day 90deg. The unit overheated and shutdown. I turned it off for 2 hrs everything was fine then a week later while shutting the grage door (wind assisted, big vibration) the thing lost all sound to the speaker outs. I then took it to the repair center outside Denver (now closed), fixed no problem. Well two weeks after getting it back lighting storm. I have all my componentes in a monster cable mid-grade surge protector. Anyway, zap, speaker outs not working again. All other items in the surge protector are fine (Sony Wega, DVD, CD and Direct TV).

It is now in the shop for the second time and if I could trade if for something else I would. On another note. I keep this receiver in a component rack and it gets so hot you can't touch it for more the a couple of seconds, so I installed a radio shack 4" computer fan in the back of the rack powered by the system itself ($30). It would have be nice is Sony designed this thing with its own internal fan. Just my two cents....

JJ - Thank GOD I didn't pay full price

No problems with my unit, just ES quality. This is a far more better amp than any Yamaha or Harman/kardon amplifier. No doubt about it.

This is not a review, so my apologies if needed.

This is a serious question, since I'm a bit clueless about which to get:

A) DENON 3802
B) SONY STRV555ES
C) MARANTZ SR8000

I am a big fan of Sony prods. but not sure if it beats the others here. Please advise FAST!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Thanks much.
