Audio Enthusiast
Strength:
Plethora of inputs, video throughput, powerful amplifiers, excellent sound, worthwhile audio customization
Weakness:
When setting the digital input to "Auto" decoding, the processor takes a quarter of a second to start producing sound from complete silence, and stops processing audio after one second of silence. That means the very beginning of all sounds from my PC are cut off, and menu navigation sounds on my Playstation 3 are inaudible, since they happen faster than how long it takes the processor to turn itself on. You can set it to PCM for stereo apps in which case the audio is "on" all the time, but any time you run a signal that is anything BUT pcm, i.e. dolby digital encoded audio, Playstation 3 and Xbox games, etc, you have to navigate the menus to switch it back to "Auto". It's not debilitating but it's the only gripe I have with the receiver. Also one of the optical inputs stopped working one day, and it used to occasionally reset the display names I gave for the input channels back to default, but for whatever reason both of these have worked properly for some time now. Also the dimmest setting for the display is not as dim as I would like it to be. It's heavy and gets hot, but It's a great receiver. Customer Service I have never had to send it away for service, but I was told "If you get any sony receiver, make sure it's an ES," and service was supposedly a strength in that regard as well. |
