Ive bought this receiver when circuit city was still around and had layaway. I was still in high school. Then I came to make a payment and the price had droppped to 199.99. Brought it home that night. Have enjoyed it ever since. Loved the fact that it could power a sub. I ended up overloading it at some point and blew out the surround sound and 3 stereo option. Could only listen in stereo for the longest time. Then I finally had the money and speakers warrant a surround sound set up and had the receiver fixed. Also bought the Technics dts/dolby digital processor on ebay for a low price. Have been enjoying digital surround for a few years. Its true that you hear the hiss at low volumes and it is fairly quiet at low volumes. When you crank it up, it can play really loud, but then it will start to distort or clip fairly quickly. My sister and nephew always enjoy watching movies with this receiver because it shakes the ground and plays loud. Highly recommended!!

well what can i say im currently using a sony tru hd av amp using hdmi leads to decode the sound ..
i have used technics av products in the past and i saw this model in a local shop 2nd hand being me i grabbed it instantly made a purchase i knew instantly this was going to be a hit of an amp ...in comparision to sound quality the technics sa-ax6outclasses in all the ways and delivers a experience like no other ,having wanting to try the sound i painstakingly i used 6 multichannel leads i have connected it to my blu ray player panasonic bd85 ,it is capable of decoding it into tru hhd via the phono leads ,and the subwoofer level control dial on the technics really punches bass right through your lungs ,im currently using a paradigm ps1000 sw ,noticably the sony lacks the power to deliver the goods ...str d800..av amp ,any comments wellcome ....

Acerca del hiss que todos comentan, si es cierto si se escucha pero es casi imperceptible hay que acercar la oreja, pero vaya si esta ahi, De que funciona caliente, tambien es cierto vamos a ver cuanto me dura aca en Mexico. De que a bajos volumenes no se escucha tan bien , no se mucho pero a lo mejor le falta loudness. pero vaya a alto volumen o vaya no tan alto digamos 1/3 y de ahi en adelante si se escucha bastante bien. Sobre todo con ese control del subwwofer que trae, a mi la verdad no me decepciono,todo lo contrario.. Los teatros a quien le sirven bueno a mi no mi Ipod trae un monton. La luz azul bien chingona (perdon).

The Technics SA AX-6 is by far the best home theater receiver I had ever owned. It ended up getting stolen from my home, and well, I miss it dearly. I have spent the past 10 or so years trying to find something else that would replace it and I have had no luck. I only wish that I could buy another.

Attractive blue light bars, decent construction, plenty of power and great sound.

Cooling system is garbage, integrated output stages mean replacing a $105.06 chip for 3 channels instead of a couple of $3 discretes if one channel dies. No Dolby Digital decoding, must have DVD player with analog outs or buy a total ripoff $180 decoder.

I wanted one of these recievers based on experience using one that a friend previously owned. I managed to get the high bid on one at eBay. When I got the unit, I immediately started having problems with it overloading and not turning the speaker outputs on, and when it did run, it ran very hot at low volumes. I tinkered with the unit and traced the problems to a cold solder joint on the -14v regulator. I resoldered the joint and my overload and turn-on problems were gone. The cooling system is horribly engineered, the fan turns on when the output reaches a certain level. I bridged the transistor on the fan and installed a temperature senesitive one that turns on when the unit turns on and varies with the TEMPERATURE and not the volume. The unit runs cool an any volume now. I am NOW very satisfied with the unit, but I can't say the same about the stock one. The power output is decent, it sounds alot better than my Sony STR-D350z, which had discrete output stages.

Runs very hot with even 8 ohm speakers. With 4 ohm, this unit will overheat at low volumes. Noticeable background hum - another reason to play your music loud through this unit.

This unit is made for the listener who wants their music LOUD. It is inefficient at low volume levels; creating mostly heat and less quality sound. But, once the volume is up where it should be, the cooling fan kicks in and the unit performs well. Although it is rated at 100 watts/channel, I would doubt it is anywhere near that high. It likely puts out around 75 - the highs become slightly muffled at higher volumes. This unit has a ton of features for the money - what sets it apart is that it has the ability to run 2 sets of full sized speakers (switched as A and B), or, you can run a 5.1 surround setup...it has outputs for both - a feature many of the newest, high end units cannot match. Inputs-wise, it has everything you will need with the exception of digitial. It was one of the transition recievers when digital was just emerging. Thus, no digital, but it does support S-Video, which is nice.

i have this receiver connected to the energy take 5 speaker system w/ exls8 sub, a panasonic dvd-a310, and a 32" panasonic superflat tv. the technics sa-ax6 is awesome - dvds in dolby digital are very impressive. when you consider the price point for this receiver (currently 259 at supremevideo), it can't be beat.

more importantly, panasonic/technics customer support has, in my opinion (after 10+ years of stereo and video product experience with them) been outstanding. when i wrote to them about the lack of sufficient capacity in their cd changer liner notes binder, they promptly sent me an extra at no charge (retails for about $22). then, when i wrote to thank them, they wrote me back, saying how wonderful it was to have a customer thank them!

Features Galore (especially if you buy it in the two peice set with the external decoder), flexibility, low impedance drive, bi-amp capability.

The amp in this thing is a gutless fop. It gets brutally hot when asking it to run hard (even with an easy 8 ohm load).

There are two major issues with this receiver. One: You have to put the volume knob to 12:00 to get any spl out of your speakers, which is the only time the cooling fan is remotely effective. The amp will get hot really fast at low volumes since the cooling fan won't operate below 1/4 volume. Two: The folks at Technics obviously spent more on the surround stuff than the internal componentry. My AX6 was successful at launching both woofers in my old B&W 220's, due to not having enough current to drive them. The amp in short is a gutless fop, and since it ruined my speakers, I sold it in contempt to the local cash converters (at least I got them to pay me 3/4 of the new value for it). I now have a little 40 watt/channel RMS Marantz receiver that could easily eat the AX6 for breakfast, and I am driving a pair of Klipsch KG 2.5's off of it. At least the surround options on this rig are excellent if you don't care about sheer volume. For the price, you can't get a fuller functioned rig.

I have never had any problems with it, and it gives me great bass and plenty through the rest of the range. The passive subwoofer output has tons of power. I used an older technics amp last year to blow up some subs under warranty. I literally set two 4 ohm 12" on fire with that amp. No problem. This amp has even more kick to it. I love it.

Overall, the best bang for the buck of any receiver I've seen in its class. The sound is wonderful and this AVR can pump out 600 watts total. The option of connecting either a powered sub or driving a passive unit with 100 watts is unheard of! The Adaptive Sub Control lets you tweak the crossover of a passive sub that lacks the feature built in...clearly Technics went all out here while maintaining the price at an attractive level.

When reviewing my options for a new Home Theater receiver, I narrowed my choices down to the AX6 and the TEAC AGD-9100. The Technics won out due to prior experience with their products (I have also purchsed Harman Kardon, Yamaha, & Sony), build quality and materials. The AX6 has binding posts for all speaker connections while the TEAC uses spring clips. I cannot say enough about the convenience of speaker wire terminated with banana plugs! The TEAC is a great unit, but the ability to power my passive sub with the additional 100 Watts was impossible to pass up. If you can still find this model, I'd suggest picking it up as I'm sure you can get a reasonable discount.

NOTE: The 1999 version (SA-AX7) has added the Tape Monitor feature and seems to have addressed the minor hissing problems. If you still like to dub tapes, I've tested this new model at Fry's and highly recommend it.

From a price perspective, this unit gets a 5. The overall rating when compared to similar units must therefore be a 5. Pick this up, you will not be disaapointed and your friends will love the blue lights (if not, you can turn them off by pressing the Center Mode button on the unit for 4 seconds).
