From the beginning I have to say that this receiver is not for somebody who has 3-head tape recorder since it doesn’t have MONITOR TAPE option so be aware of that. Second thing I’ve discovered is that the remote control is not working entirely with any Technics product. I’m speaking about the Power button, which is “dead” if you try to use it with any other Technics stuff. Maybe I’m wrong and my remote control is broken but the guys from Panasonic Service confirmed that I’m right. What can I say for sure is that in Europe and Japan they have better Technics products. Here, in North America, we can find only crap. I advice everybody who wants Technics products to buy it from Europe or Japan if they can. They have a lot of very good stuff over there: tape recorders (3-head, 20Hz-24kHz), HI-FI speakers (50-300W DIN, 25Hz-100kHz, up to 4 way and 8 speakers each with DDD system), power and control amplifiers, integrated amplifiers both classes with great specifications: S/N up to 110 dB, 3Hz-80kHz (+0dB, -3 dB) and so on. It seems that for Technics the North American market is not a big deal or maybe they have other reason why they don’t bring that stuff here also.
I understand that this receiver is not suppose to be an HI-FI product but I’ve expected at least to be able to work with the other Technics products since they are from the same “family”.

About my opinion on how this receiver sounds I’ll write a little bit later after installing and connecting all the equipment I have. This was the first impression I’ve had regarding this product. That’s why I consider for now is not worth more than 4 stars (even so I think it's to much).

I've had the SA-AX6 for 1 month and I'm very satisfied. I have AR front, rear, and center channel speakers connected; also, I have a Toshiba VCR, Toshiba TV, and a Sony CD player connected, but I don't have DVD. Noise is not a problem, but then I don't put my ear up against the speakers to search for the noise. The remote is very good except for the requirement to switch to the tuner before turning off the receiver. Yes, the blue lights are kinda of neat. Again, I'm very satisfied with the SA-AX6 at $319.
Since I don't hear "noise" with my setup, is there any reason for that lack of "noise"?

I have been using the Technics AX-6 and the AC-500D since December and I am extremely pleased with the duo. At first I was like, Technics?!? because I just gave up my Dolby Digital Sony ES receiver (It didn't have DTS) and I was a bit reluctant, but with S-Video switching (which I will never use, you shouldn't either) and plenty of power, I figured what the heck. I dig the binding posts and it looks so damn cool. The blue neon lights behind the tinted glass looks as cool as any receiver I've seen in a while. As for the decoder, it is awesome as well. A slight hissing noise is present but who cares? I'm running 2 JBL L7 towers, a JBL HLS center, and 2 JBL HLS 810's, pluse the new JBL D115 sub (which rocks) and they haven't sounded better. I just traded in the Panasonic A310 for their new, but cheaper A120. The 310 broke and Sears has had it for seven weeks so I bought a new one. I did have the Sony 500D, but it didn't have DTS either. On Dolby Digital tracks it sounds great, although at times a bit bright and DTS just plain kicks ass! Listen to the Goldeneye DVD, then watch the Laserdisc version in DTS and be amazed at the low frequency pushed out by all channels, especially the sub.My only problems are that the remote sucks bad (Harmon Kardon touchscreen to the rescue thank god, pick it up, it's great) and before I had by JBL D115 I had a 150 watt powered Onkyo sub, but it didn't have a crossover kill switch like my new on so I got a muddied up midbass response. And since the receiver also has a sub volume level, I'm still screwed because you have to adjust forever to find the right levels. I might go in and disable that little feature but don't tell Technics!

Good enough for me untill my Parasound THX 5 channel 220*5 arrives in June. I'll use this in my dorm room. Great value for the money or anything for that matter, but don't listen to me, pick it up for yourself.

Strength:

Looks great, Has great build quality, High power, 6X100 watts and amazing bass, good cooling system.

Weakness:

Fairly naff remote control, gets a bit too hot at times. Some hiss produced at high levels.

I cant really comment on this receivers ability as a home cinema piece of kit as ive never really used it for that purpose, but its surround facilities are very impressive for this price range. As a stereo receiver its a very impressive piece of kit producing highly impressive levels of bass even through a set of 1965 Dynatron speakers.
Many people complain about the reliability of the receiver however I havnt came across any problems as of yet and I hammer it to say the least. The fact that can run a passive sub from it is another plus to this already well rounded piece of kit.
If your on a budget and looking for a high powered good looking amp with great build quality then look no further, what else is there to be said.

Strength:

Beatifull design, subwoofer level control, lots of base

Weakness:

Hiss from surround speaker, remote sucks big time,no optical inputs,no on board dolby digital and dts decoders,

I have this receiver for almost two years now and did not expirienced any technical problems with it.Looks realy cool with blue lights built in but after two years of looking at it You can see other things .I'm upgrading my whole system and i started to look for better components about 6 months ago. This unit sound prety good but You could do better for same money ($399 list 2 years ago).It have reaaly nice amount of base but for my taste it should have more highs too.Prologic sounds prety good ,dvd dolby digital o.k. not as good as i heard on other receivers (you need to have dvd with dolby digital decoder built in).I can hear hiss from surround speakers even with 30% of volume ,level volume for each chanel is not adjustable in dolby digital mode(maybe because lack of internal DD decoder),no optical in/outs,no component in/outs no on screan dispaly,I put it against sherwood newcastle 925 and for$250 receiver sherwood sounds much better for both music and movies.Right now I'm planning to buy either onkyo 777 or 787,harman kardon 510 or yamaha 995.Because difrences I hears in stores are verry small so I will try to find the best deal on one of them and I will take it home and than test it .In my living room with my speakers .

If you want a great sounding Dolby Digital Ready receiver ONLY, this is a good start. I use a Sony DVP S500D DVD player with the decoder built in, so I have no need for the Technics decoder. My main drivers are Definitive Technology BP 2000's, with a Def Tech center as well. My first impression on this receiver in 6 channel mode was and is very good. The surround modes (club, hall, live, etc...) are about useless, very unnatural and fake (does anyone really use these anyways?). As with just about everyone else, I agree the remote was probably thought of, designed, and produce in about 30 seconds. There is a way to turn the system off without having to go to your tuner first. Simply place your hand over the front of the remote infrared, hit tuner, cd, or tape to activate, remove your hand from the front of the remote, and turn it off. No on-screen menus so you'll have to get up to change the bass and treble, usually a trial and error and thing depending on the soundtrack. Although I love the blue lights, you'll have to get up to turn these off and on as well. Some good points are: It is a very handsome unit. The bass control, which is set at 50Hz +/-10dB, this should get some of your speakers shaking the house. Low impedence selector. Bi-amping, which I have been using. If you want to use this receiver for 6-channel operation only, go ahead buy it. But if you like your toys such as surround modes and making adjustments from your lazy chair, keep searching.
I for one, would rather pay more to get some of these valuable features.

The SA-AX6 is a great home theatre amp coupled with the SH-AC500D dolby digital decoder. I have heard the background noise mentioned by some of the other reviewers, however, I do not think it that bad, it is very low and is hardly obtrusive. This product is good value for money and it looks pretty cool as well.
I do have one complaint though. If you select 6 channel discrete audio input the amp switches to DVD and will not allow 6 channel input in any other mode. So if, like me, you have DSS with digital audio outputs you have to use an external video switch box. The SH-AC500D allows 3 digital audio signals in so why does the amp not allow 6 channel audio on another video source. I have called Panasonic and they said that it could not be uncoupled. Maybe someone knows a way to uncouple this fuction, if you do an email would be appreciated.

I am giving the amp 3 stars 1 lost because of the above problem and 1 lost because of the 2 remotes.

Strength:

good price for the features, came bundled with a separate dts. dd5.1 decoder, will drive a 4 ohm load.

Weakness:

hiss from center channel

This receiver has ample power to fill an average room with thunderous home theater sound. I used a passive sub at first but later purchased a 300 watt self-powered sub by a Canadian company called David D-Box, to take the load off the receiver. By the way, this sub is awesome for $300 Canadian. Anybody else out there have one? The only problems with this receiver is the lack of sufficient imputs, i.e. only 2 s-video and 2 optical imputs on the decoder. I cannot get rid of the hiss originating from the center channel. I have a high-quality Jamo center. I have had no overheating problems.

The SA-AX6 is not worth any price. I bought one and every time I turn it on it shuts down and reads "overload" when I push the help button it reads "problem corrected" and then shuts down again. What junk! GIVE ME SONY OR GIVE ME DEATH!!!!
