Strength:

PRICE, FEATURES, SOUND, JUST PLUG IN YOUR DVD PLAYERS SIX CHANNEL OUTPUTS AND HOLD ON!

Weakness:

WELL, I GUESS THAT IT'S NOT A PRESTIGE NAME BUT WHEN EVERYONE HEARS IT THEY THINK IT'S GREAT!

I BOUGHT THIS BRAND NEW ON EBAY FOR LESS THAN $200 DELIVERED! MY OLDER BROTHER SAID I SHOULD HAVE BOUGHT A SONY, UNTIL HE HEARD IT. IT IS REALLY A POWERFUL RECEIVER AND IT SOUNDS BETTER THAN MY BROTHERS (THE KNOW-IT-ALL PAYED TWICE AS MUCH FOR HIS SONY)!

THE DOLBY DIGITAL SOUND IS AWESOME FROM MY TOSHIBA 3109 AND CD'S SOUND GREAT TO.

FOR THIS KIND OF MONEY YOU CAN'T GO WRONG. I THINK THEY ARE STILL SELLING ON EBAY, I BOUGHT FROM ALLAN, HE'S COOL!

I just bought this receiver and hooked it up to 4 Infinity speakers and a Jensen center channel (hey, I'm only in college and don't have a couple grand to throw away on a good system). I bought some good Monster speaker wire and then fired it up and was very impressed with the sound quality/separation in both stereo and surround modes. I never once noticed a hiss coming out of my surround speakers or my center speaker. All in all, I think this is a great receiver for the money I paid for it (I sold the digital processor that came with it for 200, and only paid 300 total).

This is my 1st receiver. An outstanding buy at $540 cdn (msrp$699) considering the features available, not to mention that coupled with the new Technics decoder with DTS capability my entertainment center will kick!

Weakness:

THD is a little higher than I expected.

Overall, this is one of the best recievers for the price I could find. Technics has always done a nice job of making a mid-level product at an affordable price with nice features.

Strength:

Has 6 Channel inputs.

Weakness:

No DD decoder. Hiss at low volume. My 6 channel mode doesn't work any more.

I wouldn't by this brand any more. Not after the 6 channel crapped out only 1-2 months after buying this thing. The hiss is annoying too.

Strength:

phono, lots of other features

Weakness:

bad remote control design, tuner controls, over-heating

This receiver has worked great in the first two years of owning it. The remote control is the only disappointment. The buttons are all the same size (you have to read the button labels or memorize them) and the operational angle is awful.

Since about 6 months ago I frequently lose my left speaker or find that I have to keep cranking up the volume while watching DVD's. The problems seem to result from excessive heat since everything works fine when the unit is cold. I have read feedback from other consumers complaining about the AX720 and other Technics receivers having heat problems so I am not alone.

I refuse to spend money to fix this cheap unit so I am working around the problem by separating the left and right speakers across A and B terminals and attaching a second continuously running fan to the back. There is a nice article on how to add the fan at www.zolton.org/casemod.

I can't recommend this receiver. Save money in the long run by buying a more expensive unit and carefully research the quality of the unit.

Strength:

Dirt cheap 5.1 surround amp. (Doesn't decode though)
Stereo mode sounds good.

Weakness:

Surround mode plagued with underlying hiss - not brutal - JUST enough to be a distraction.

Overall a decent value for the money but I had to upgrade before that underlying hiss drove me nuts! Highly recommend you do some research before jumping on board with this one. Save your pennies and spring for a Yamaha amp - still a good value for your money with power to spare and Total Harmonic Distortion specs. that rival Onkyo and Harmon Kardon.

A pretty decent amp all things considered but the noise in the surround is an annoyance.

Strength:

All around great reciever and never had a problem.

Weakness:

The hiss everyone talk about is there until I found that my TV was causing the hiss. If you have the TV pugged in near the outlet where the reciever is plugged in you get the hiss. To see if yours is the same try turning your TV off and listen for the his. If its gone thats the problem.

Great all-around system period. I have it hooked up to my Panasonic DVD and to JBL speakers including sub. Plus I have a 58" HDTV Pioneer Widescreen TV now and it just puts me in the movie. Can't beat it.

This Technics reciever is another example of good implementation of technology for music reproduction. This unit is my second reciever, and I am very content at it's generous power levels, 6 channel direct input, and it's rather natural sounding suround sound system. The different "SFC" modes are good for different types of music; however, the manual does not help about the decisions. Trust your ears. In terms of sound quality, this unit has a bold sonrious sound. The treble is at a "normal" level and the bass is authoritive while still retianing a nice warm, pleasant, and soul-filled mid-range.
The cabinent is quite sturdy and has a neat fan that comes on when the house rattles. The front display is also eye-pleasing. All in all, I am very happy with this component, the only thing I can think of to gripe on is the speaker terminals- oh well.(but they are used once then forgoton about)
Rick
P.S. I still listen to records. A phono section is very imporant to me.

Price paid: $299Retailer: Best Buy
Comments: This is my first receiver. I have upgraded from a Sharp mini-system that I have had since high school. I spent weeks checking out on-line information, visiting retailers including Bryn Mawr Stereo, American Appliance, Circuit City, and Best Buy. Because of positive experiences with Sony products in the past I first looked at Sony. I also saw some Yamaha's, Denon's, and Kenwood's. For the money, the Technics seemed to offer the most features and performance. For example in stereo only mode the Technics is rated at 0.05% THD versus Sony's 0.09% THD. The system is powerful; it offers 100 watts of power to each of the left, center, right, and surround channels. I am not crazy about the system when it is in surround mode. The sound doesn't sound clear or vibrant from the surround channels. However, in stereo only I think the system sounds very good. Music is well defined and the sound is rich. I suspect that I may need to readjust the position of my speakers or I may need to rearrange my living room to improve the surround sound performance. Overall, I am happy with the performance of this receiver. My only real complaint is that the phono input is a complete waste. I much prefer that it was a regular input. I havn't owned or bought any records since the early 80's. I don't even no anyone my age who has any albums. In case your are wondering I am twenty three.
