Weakness:
REMOTE First of all the receiver LOOKS nice.It has optical digital inputs,S-video,banana plugs for all channels, impedance select, and a few sound fields.Quite a bargain.Seems to have good power for the rating.Remote is typical at this price point. The fan runs when volume is turned to about 10 o'clock position and is very quite. You can't hear it at all.Haven't tried the DD/DTS capability yet so I can't comment on that. The defining point of this receiver is that the sound is very bright.Klipsch owners certainly should look elsewhere.I bought it simply for a spare receiver to use on the occasion that I want to test speakers. You get a lot for the money with this receiver, assuming you pay practically nothing for it. |

Strength:
THere is many stregnths im my mind, too many to list.
Weakness:
The Remote sucks its a little too touchy. You could fry an egg (literaly)on the top when the fan does not run. B speakers cannot be used in surround mode.. I think that The Technics SA-DX 1040 (same model as the SA-DA8N according to the manual)has very good sound for a "Mid Price" reciever. I was told by my ears along with my father that my Reciever Connected to a Pair of each JBL L-100's and Jensen J-3's, with a technics CD changer that cost me about $1500, sounds better than his Bang and Olufsen system that cost him $7000. My Technics has very good Bass response and with my speakers seems to cover the spectrum about as much that you can comprehend. I am very impressed with the performance of this reciever, It sound just about as good as anything at a fraction of the cost. I would definately reccomend it to anyone looking for the "best bang for their buck". Similar Products Used: Bang and Olufsen BO-1245, Marantz 2252B, Sony (allknds), Pioneer VSX-D209,Nakamichi of some sort. Thats about it. |

Strength:
Built in Dolby Digital/DTS processors.
Weakness:
No remote link, no digital coax input, not a full functional remote control For the price, it is an attractive and powerful DD/DTS reciever. Listening to DVD's on this unit is fine, but God forbid you want to change your input to VCR2. You actually have to get out of your chair. I can pick this thing apart in many other areas, but even products like B&K's Reference 20 DD/DTS processor($2700)has problems. Similar Products Used: Technics SA-GX770 |

Strength:
Clear crisp sound with nice detail in the highs and tight powerful lows {the midrange on my speakers suck so im not gonna say anything bout that}.more than enough ins and outs id say almost to many features! great looks also is kinda big in size {you can impress your friends that never heard a component system before :) and so on....
Weakness:
like said above too many features bass does seem to lack untill the "burn in" period is finished. The heat issue is pretty bad but easily fixed and is not a problem. I bought this receiver from best buy iv owned it for about 3 months. Its a great receiver i have no complaints {unless you count the ones above but they are nothing}. High power. Lots of inputs including s-vhs. Speaker size and distance. Build quality. Price!!!
Weakness:
Cheap remote, some switching requires getting up and accessing the unit. Gets hot as hell. This review is in reference to the SA-DX1040 which according to the manual is identical. Similar Products Used: Aiwa, Sony, JVC |

none WOW! to those of you that say the heating is a problem i wonder why you bought such a big reciever if you wern't going to listen to it loud. The fan kicks in at a moderate level and cools it down right away and it doesn't get that hot anyway if you leave a few inches for it to breath. If you think the power is rated low then i wonder why it shakes the pictures off the walls in my house maybe you live in a football stadium. For twice the money i can't find any better quality sound or volume. Remote is a little weak but runs all my other hardware with a little practice. I find no trouble running my Infinity 255's to ear hurting levels with no problems. Plenty of power to run my 300 watt fronts and my 150 watt rears to heart pounding levels yes i like loud music. Many different equalizer settings are available to fit everyones taste. Biwire capable is a plus. Sound quality is excelent. I listen to classic rock and like a strong bass and drum sound and this reciever really rocks. For the low budget person with a high quality taste I strongly recomend Technics equipment. For price value and quality I give this reciever a 5 star rating there might be better products out there for more money but unless you are a true audiophile with big bucks I haven't found a better reciever! Strength:
A lot of bang for the buck.
Weakness:
No RCA Digital Inputs When I moved to North Carolina I was absolutely devistated when the movers crushed the box to my reciever which was the SA-TX50 (If anybody is familair with that reciever then you would know that it was absolutly the most georgeous thing that Technics has ever put out) when I opened the box to my old reciever the back plate was slightly dented inwards. Thinking that it really wasn't that much damaged I pluged it in and nothing came on. Paniced I opened her up and did some investigating only to descover that the entire motherboard so to speak was cracked in half. Oh the humanity, my baby was gone. Later that day I was at the electronics store just browsing at some replacements when there she was, the SA-DA8. My wife then came down the isle and saw me drooling and gave me the thumbs up to get it (she knows how home theater is my life). I rushed home and hooked her up, which did not take long seeing how everything else was ran, and gave her a spin. WOW what a great reciever for the money. I have had no problems with her and for the people that complain about it running a little hot I was fully expecting that (the SA-TX50 ran hot too). She looks good and pushs my Klipsch Reference Series speakers with no problems. I would recomend her to anybody that lives in the real world and can't afford $3500 recievers. Good looking, Dolby Digital, and DTS Decoding. Bi-Wire Function for High end Speakers. Built in Fan. 3 Optical inputs
Weakness:
Runs very very hot!! No Component video switching. Bad remote. Wow what an Amp for the price. Had a Technics receiver for past three years(and loved it), but wanted DD/DTS decoding built in. Saw this receiver on display and it cought my attention right away(Gold Version), and when I saw the price I had to give it a try. Similar Products Used: Technics SA-AX6 Pro Logic(DVD ready)(1998) |

Strength:
Price, Power, Sound Quality, Dolby 5.1, overall value.
Weakness:
Poor remote control design, No digital co-ax input, Runs very hot, The unit itself is not very "user-friendly", the unit will not function off of the univeral remote that controls the rest on my system. At first I was very skeptical about this unit. The first unit I bought was defective right out of the box, and it was a factory sealed box. For example, it would function in stereo mode but not in surround or sound field modes. After checking my connections several times and re-connecting several different ways, my (and Technics tech support) conclusion was that the unit was defective. I guess I should have known by the smell right out of the box. It smell like an electrical short. The unit I received after exchange functioned right out of the box. At first, the gold finish on the unit didn't fit with the rest of my system. All of my other components and black and it stuck out like a sore thumb. At having it in the lineup for a while, it does look rather impressive now. For the money I paid for this unit, it performs extremely well. It runs my home theater very efficiently and without distortion. The major shortcoming is the heat generation. Although it does have an onboard fan that is supposed to come on automatically, I haven't seen it come on in the 6 months that I have owned it. You cannot put anything within 3 inches of the top of this unit. The other weaknesses that I listed above are really more just inconveniences. Once you are used to operating the unit on its terms, you'll have a good relationship with it. I am sure that there are better units out there, but for the money, the unit deserves a high rating. |
