Strength:
Price, overall sound quality, features for the price
Weakness:
dinky buttons on the remote is all I can find Well, I had a Pioneer Elite VSX-35 TX that had the THX chip go out on it twice, so it was still under return warranty and I returned it. I also did not feel the sound quality was worthy of the price, especially the preset surrounds. I was reading audioreview and stumbled across the Technics SA DX1050. I had previously been a fan of Technics when I lived in Japan in the 80''s. Most of the reviews were really helpful and I thought for the price, if it sounded decent it would be a steal. I was right! I am using Infinity RS-8''s for the front, Infinity CC-3 center and Infinity RS-5''s for the rear and an audio acoustic sub (man for the price of this sub, I will put the sub up against any sub in any price category, beautiful, deep , rich bass, another killer deal for $129). I have a Pioneer DV-F727 301 disc DVD player and a Pioneer PD-F1009 300 disc CD player hooked to it, along with the digital output from the cable TV. I was so use to testing the Pioneer Elite with the Matrix and Top Gun DVD''s that I stuck with those. For some reason this Technics sounds 10 times better that the Elite. The separation between speakers is clear and incredible. very life like. No noise at all at any of the room volumes I listen to and I am impressed (for the price) of the sound quality of the audio and DVD''s. I am not a big fan of the artificial surround sounds, so the lack of is no big deal. From James Taylor live on DVD to Santana to Joe Satriani, this thing rocks with clear, crisp sound and I couldn''t be happier. The Elite was nothing but a nightmare and their tech support sucked. They have some issues with the THX chip burning out a channel, in my case it was the right rear, and then only ungodly noise gets output. I think with a blindfold on, 9 out of 10 would agree with me that this sound is better than the VSX-35TX. All you that recommended this, Kudos. The cash I saved and increase sound quality is a great deal all around. I am using the optical hookups. Yeh, the remote blows. Who cares for this price. At least I got the remote to turn the TV on and off! Similar Products Used: Pioneer Elite VSX-35TX was returned for this and this is a hell of a lot better. |

Oh no! After listening to it this week, I discovered that my 1050 has a glitch. After 20-40 seconds, there is a distinct and spontaneous volume drop when listening to anything that uses analog inputs... almost as if the EQ loop drops out. I think I can detect a less drastic volume drop on the digital inputs, but I could be imagining things there. The analog drop is very real, and it''s not something I am willing to live with. I would be willing to exchange and try another, but this was the last 1050 in the store, and I don''t think Best Buy is even stocking it anymore. Refund time, and time to shop for higher end items. :-/ See you next month on the Marantz 5200 page. *sigh* |

Strength:
MOSFET provides very clear sound at high output. Easily the best receiver for the money.
Weakness:
Degrades your relationship with neighbors if you don''t invite them over. Yesterday was a sad day. After six years of service, I took "Old Faithful", my Technics 100x5 Pro Logic receiver which I love dearly, out of the rack. It will live on as a hand-me-down or as a bedroom/home office receiver, but its days as my primary home theater receiver are done. It''s almost like the day Wayne Gretzky retired. But oh how quickly sadness can turn to joy! The successor to my Pro Logic receiver is none other than the Techincs SA-DX 1050, and a fitting successor it is! I expected better sound by virtue of finally getting to hear DTS sound out of my dvd player, and by getting the MOSFET output stage. I did not expect the 1050 to slap my old system around like a rag doll, but it does. The highs are crisp and clean as usual, but it is the well-defined bass tones that surprised me the most. The crossover settings for a small center channel speaker are far better than in the old receiver as well. Mind you, this is not in the class of Pioneer Elite. This is more for the Audiophile-On-A-Budget. You don''t get a plethora of digital inputs, insanely low THD, or disgustingly high power. The amp is rated 100W at 6 ohms, which is somewhat akin to a can of soda calling itself one and a half servings. Most home theater speakers in the purchaser''s budget will be rated 8 ohms, so the amp''s power rating is closer to 75 Watts at 8 ohms. However, a reviewer of the 950 model (1050''s twin without S-Video or VCR2) quoted a consumer reports test which showed that the amp can actually push 120+ watts at 8 ohms without clipping. 75 sustained and 120 peak is still plenty to drive your bass without sacrificing power to midtones and highs... and plenty to drive your neighbors nuts. You do get support for DVD-Audio. Above anything else, that should be on your list of must-have features. Match it up with a Panasonic DVD-Audio/Video player, and you won''t even need to configure the remote control. As far as build quality is concerned... I''ve never had a day of trouble with any of my Technics equipment. I''m looking forward to six more years. Similar Products Used: old Techincs Pro Logic receiver |

Strength:
Inputs, sound, ease of use.
Weakness:
remote, overheating, lack of lots of power This receiver is a nice value for the money. I have it set up with JBL S38 speakers and it works well. The sound quality is very good and I have no problems with any of the controls. I may push this receiver a little bit too far on occasion and it seems to overload fairly easily. I have had some problems with it overloading at a volume level of -16 and above. This problem has developed slowly and may not be typical but is definitely annoying to say the least. I think that the power isn''t quite what it should be in a receiver of this category. Perhaps it would be a better bet to go with something with 100W at 8ohms. Another weakness of the receiver is that there are only 5-way posts for the A set of speakers. That works for my set up, but limits your set up with surround. As far as the highly debated remote goes, I would have to say that it could be better. Small buttons, no back lighting and cheesy feel leave something to be desired. The power button on mine has also decided not to work to turn the receiver on. It finds more use as an extension to reach the power button. This receiver does get hot, but the fan works well. I think the lack of many ventilation holes on the top of the unit hurts its performance. That could be fixed fairly easily, though, with a hole punch or a drill (carefully). Overall, I think this is a good receiver that I has had a few isolated problems with me. I''ll try to be nicer to it. . |

Strength:
Good power and is easy to customize. The fan will greatly extend the life.
Weakness:
Gets a little hot, but has not overheated. It is a good overall buy. I am satisfied and would buy another one for another room. Most receivers in the price range do not have a fan so that makes it stand out above the crowd. Similar Products Used: Yamaha Receiver |
