(thats for Jc, Audiophile from Washington State (10/12/00 5:58:24 PM and SA-DX940 too!))

Hah... The power button works very well, just has a logic... Always select first the input and THEN the power button (tuner+power turns on the 930). If you have another remotable Technics unit(s), then you can turn on these with this remote too! (I have an excellent AZ7 Technics deck, so TAPE, then red Power button turns the deck on...:)) ...and works the play, rew, fwd, stop button too!) AND: the AUDIO ON/OFF button of the remote control (top right...) turns all the remotable Technics units off simultaneously! That is very-very coool...

So, some words: i have the european version of the 930 (no lame sound field control, but no overheat too! no coax digital input, but optical for the dvd too!). And sorry for my bad english, i have never learned this language...:)))

And my dear guys: the owner's manual of 930 begins so:

CAUTION!
DO NOT INSTALL OR PLACE THIS UNIT IN A BOOKCASE, BUILT IN CABINET OR IN ANOTHER CONFINED SPACE IN ORDER TO KEEP WELL VENTILATED CONDITION. ENSURE THAT CURTAINS AND ANY OTHER MATERIALS DO NOT OBSTRUCT THE VENTILATION CONDITION...
DO NOT PLACE A TAPE DECK, CD, OR DVD PLAYER ON TOP OF THIS UNIT.
Hmm, what about low speaker impedance? (But the protection circuitry functions very well, so...)

And: Technics has two very-very good, nice-looking (european) web-sites at www.technics.co.uk and www.technics.de, see it! There are some high-end products, that do not sold in America and not have an american version...

Bye!!!

Strength:

affordable. 5X100 power output. digital inputs.

Weakness:

remote.

well, well, well... reading these reviews all i have heard is the heat issue. i bought mine when it first hit the market (over a year ago). if you can't tell by the $350 price tag. its a wonder what a year will do to the price of something. anyway, with over a year of heavy use, mine is still kickin'. i have had no heat problems. just keep it in a well ventalated area and for gods sakes, don't stack all of you electronic equipment on top of it! the only quarel i have with this product is the cheap ass remote! some buttons work and some don't. namley the power button has been giving me headaches. it works one day and not the next. well, that's all i got. it has been a good unit for me. and for $200 or whatever they go for now, its a good buy.

Strength:

Has DTS and dolby decoding built in.

Weakness:

None so far

I have had mine since March. I picked it up on auction refurbished and it has been fine. I noticed that it does get a bit hot, but not to the point of overheating. (Maybe they fixed that when they refurbished it.) Has done nothing but kick out nice sounds. It is not a top of the line unit, but for the price, it is plenty for the everyday listner.

Strength:

first it sounds good

Weakness:

later it dies (your dod not yet? it will!)

Last night after ordering a movie on my DSS, this thing gave up on me. Same crap I've just read from other users:stereo mode is on, but no DVD, DSS, etc.I called tech.support and the dude told me that they never heard of this kind of problem: horsesh_t. I just knew that I will find others here who share my pain.
I was a big Technics fan for 20 years, but no more. My next purchase is who knows what: have to have at least 5 years warranty and Made in Japan.
Good luck to you, and If someone sues let me know.

Strength:

Great unit for the price. DTS, Dolby Digital.

Weakness:

Can't use the remote to switch into digital mode. No S-video inputs and outputs.

This unit would be great for $200 more than what I paid for it. It's feature packed and sounds great. The DTS and Dolby Digital fill my HT room with rich, full sound. I don't even have surround speakers in place yet, and this receiver delivers the goods. I would recommend using the digital inputs for the best sound, as it is VERY easy to tell the difference between the digital and analog connections.

The only thing that bugs me about it is the inability to switch to digital input with my remote. This is a bother because my broadcast channels on my satellite receiver come through as analog, and I can't hear them if the receiver is set to digital. So I have to leave the receiver on analog. This might not have been so bad if Technics had put separate inputs on the unit for Satellite and TV. I also wish it had S-video inputs and output. But what can you expect for $250? Hell, some receivers don't offer these features for $350 more!!

As far as Aaron's raking of this unit, please!! That review's credibility goes out the door with the endorsement of a Sony product, KMART's answer to audio components. Reasonable people can disagree on audio products, because different tastes and needs require different levels and types of products. But you can bet on this rule: If Sony sells it, someone else makes it better, usually cheaper.

Strength:

Solid power, lots of features, clean sound

Weakness:

"Universal" remote that isn't, no 5.1 inputs

Nice, solid unit with excellent sound if you use the digital input. I've got a high-end Sony DVD on the coax input and with the increasingly-available DTS 5.1 CDs, the sound is spectacular. DVDs are as expected. The main gripe I have with this unit is an inability to use the "universal" remote to control a fairly recent Technics changer, and very bare minimum features when controlling a Philips TV and the Sony DVD. Sony seems better at making universal remotes truly universal, but that's no reason to buy a Sony. All in all, clean sound, enough features to occupy me, and a decent value. The main improvement I'd suggest would be discrete 5.1 inputs and an F connector for FM antenna instead of screw clamps.

All-in-one product, and delivers

Weakness:

Heats up quickly, strange remote

Took some time before i decided to try this unit out, primarily for it's cheap price (i'm a student), but i'm very happy with it so far.
Since i'm not an audiophile i don't need the best of the best, but this is certainly worth a second look if you're on a budget, great for DVDs!!

My only complaint is the straange remote (as the reviewer below says) if you want to power off, you first have to press "Tuner" on the remote and then "power" to turn it off, otherwise it won't react for some reason.. very strange indeed, and that's the same problem on an older technics receiver i've owned before.

lack of S-Video in. Runs hot.

This system is the best bang for the buck thats out there with DD and DTS built in. Awesome power!! I rarely have to go beyong the 9 O clock position and the apt. shakes! Good channel seperation in stereo and surround modes, and good clarity even at loud levels.

dts decoder

Weakness:

heat, lack of customer support

i bought this one because it was in the store at the time i was looking and all that mattered to me was that i could hear dts. it sounded good, even though it gets hot fast. anyway, three months later, the thing went kablooey and i had it repaired under warranty. but they didn't fix the whole problem. and now technics says i have to take it back to the same service center and let them take a second crack at it before they'll take it back. in the meantime, not only do i not have dts, i don't have stereo, period. i'm never buying another technics/panasonic product again. this is one of the worst consumer electronics experiences i've ever had.

DD 5.1 and DTS Great sound for such a small price!!!!

Weakness:

Unit runs a little hot....If you change out the 1amp fuse with a 1.6amp it preforms well with little problems

Unit ran warm and went out after only 2 months. It was still covered buy Technics and i have a freind that repairs A/V equip. and he replaced the blown fuse (when it quits thats all the repair is 50 cent fuse). Tv/DSS sound could be heard on all modes if you turned the volume up.

Change out that fuse and the reciver rocks, with out problem now for over 8 months and i use it everyday.

unit still gets what i call warm but its not a problem if you dont set anything on top of it!!!!

only four stars because no S-video inputs or optical input on dvd
but what can i expect for $147.00
