Strength:

Excellent sound quality and power output.

Weakness:

runs remarkably hot, and the remote won't control my DVD player

I have always been a big fan of Technics products. This reciever has the same or better performance than many higher priced units. I am currently using another fan to help controll the heat this unit produces, but I have had no problems with it. Technics definitely needs to include a more universal remote, I like the layout of the remote...but it won't work with my DVD player. I would definitely recommend this reciever to anyone interested in experiencing Dolby Digital or DTS sound at an affordable price.

Strength:

Sounds great. Dolby Digital, DTS, and Pro-Logic all into a unit thats less than $400

Weakness:

Remote.

I've had this receiver for a little less than a week now. And let me tell you, it is excellent for the price. I listened to all the budget receivers, Sony's STR-DE835, Pioneer's VSX-D608, Yamaha's RX-595, and Technics SA-DX930. And all though I liked the Yamaha the best, it didn't have DTS. The Technics came in second. It has excellent sound, and the Pro-Logic is much better than my previous receiver. I also learned that just because a CD is in Stereo, doesn't mean it can be decoded in pro-logic. Which was not the case of my previous receiver.

And the fan doesn't go on at a certain temperature. It turns on at a certain volume. I read all the reviews here, and saw that it had a heat problem. So I worried alot that I might burn it out at high volumes. So I kept it low. But once I turned it up to about 10:30, I went to feel the receiver, and it felt fine. I later found out that it was because the fan turned on. If you want the fan to turn on, turn it up to about 10:30, make sure there is a signal going in and that music is playing. And don't turn down the signal or volume or else the fan won't turn on.

I haven't gotten a chance to try out Dolby Digital, or DTS. But i'm very anxious to. =)

for the price, this receiver's great. I would reccomend buying it. The manual doesn't try to hide information like most budget-receivers do. It tells you the damping factor, dynamic headroom, S/N ratio, and the way the range that the power was measured in. The remote lacks a little, and you have to actually read the manual to set-up the receiver (i.e. speaker set-up). For the price, you can't beat it.

Strength:

Great features and price

Weakness:

Burns up!

The unit works like a champ when it works. Unfortunately, I've had two burn up on me in a six month period. With my second one I even had rigged up a small cooling fan to it. I'm currently trying to get help from Technics/Panisonic, but nothing of use yet. I'd like to say it's great, but it did'nt work for me.

Strength:

Very good sound, ease of use, both DD and DTS for an affordable price.

Weakness:

Poor remote, unit runs hot, not enough digital inputs.

This is a perfect receiver for someone (like myself) who is just entering the world of 6-channel sound. It really is a tremendous value for the money. At 100 watts per channel and with built-in decoders for both Dolby Digital and DTS, it is really a bargain. The list price is $349, but it can easily be found on the Web for well under $300. The sound is excellent and it is very easy to use. The only drawbacks are a lame remote, too few digital inputs (only 1 coaxial and 2 optical), and the fact that it runs a little hot, though it does have a fan. Overall, I recommend this receiver to anyone else on a budget who wants a lot of bang for the buck.

Strength:

Great sound for the buck

Weakness:

It breaks

This unit puts out great sound and has great features. Unfortunately, the unit runs extremely hot and burns out. I've been through 2 within 6 mos. Based on this I would not recommend it.

Strength:

Fairly good sound, DTS decoder built in.

Weakness:

runs very hot and the fan never worked

Had the unit for just 3 months when the sound just cut out to barely audible. Tried maximum volume and sound was faintly audible and the TV/DSS audio now is heard on Tape, VCR and Tuner inputs. I called Technics and they recommended returning it for service.

Strength:

cooling system, cranks out good volume, DD and DTS build in

Weakness:

No s-video, no 5.1 inputs, no bananna plugs

Fixing the blown fuse problem is not difficult, no soldering is required. Here are specific instructions for replacing the fuse, use at your own risk:
1. Unplug the unit!
2. Remove the 6 screws holding the top (and sides) on. 2 large headed philips screws are on each side, and 2 small headed philips screws are on the back at the top.
3. Remove the top.
4. Looking in from the front, on the left side is the power supply. Locate the 4 glass fuses [==], one is one the bottom, the other three are on the top hanging down from the board.
5. On my system, the blown fuse was hanging from the top, and was the closest fuse to the side of the unit. Remove the blown fuse from the clips holding it. Don't touch anything else!
6. Go to your local Radio Shack and buy a replacement fuse of the same size, but with a 1.6 amp rating. I believe the part number is 27-1051.
7. Clip your new fuse in, put the top back on, screw back the 6 screws in.
8. Plug it in and enjoy!

Now let me rant a little about the other reviews that claim there is a heat problem.

The heat that this puppy generates is normal for recievers of this class and power rating. When you crack the unit open you will find an elaborate aluminum heatsink system that funnels all the heat out a relatively small vent. With all the heat venting from one spot, gee, it gets hot, that's how it's supposed to work, DUH! Touching other areas of the reciever, such as the sides, and it will be barely warm. If the heat of the unit does get too high there is a termally activated fan that will kick in and cool it down.

Do not block the top vent, and be sure to place the reciever in a location where the heat can dissapate. This advise is true for all recievers in this class and not specific to the SA-DX930.

Except for the fuse blunder, this is a decent system for the money.

Strength:

Inexpensive entry into the DTS realm; simple remote for non-enthusiasts

Weakness:

see below

What was Technics thinking? No Optical input for DVD? DUH!!! A person who gets into the digital age will definitely want to connect optical to their DVD player! Unfortunately, Technics felt the need to give 1 of their 2 optical inputs to THE FREAKIN' CD PLAYER! Like that many people have CD recorders! MAN!

I haven't experienced any overheating, but I keep this unit out in the open, and cleaned bi-weekly.

I connected the DVD player to the DSS optical inputs (my only choice) just to experience digital; I was somewhat impressed. Good, clean sound. Unfortunately, I don't own a Sub and the bass this unit put out to my front towers was pretty weak. Maybe a sub will solve this, I don't know; My Pro-Logic receiver always made the towers rumble the house at the same (reported) wattage.

In short, I haven't owned this unit long enough to witness its good points, but I think I'll take it back to Best Buy for store credit; hopefully, they won't give me too much resistance.

Strength:

Price, easy to operate, looks good with nice layout of controls, high power and excellent specs...

Weakness:

Can't find anything as of yet but it does run a little warm....

I have been very pleased with this unit since I purchased it last September. It does run a little warm but I have not experienced any problems to this point....will have to see how it performs over time...Would highly recommend that the unit be place on the very top of any audio rack in order to obtain maximum air flow....the fan on the back is well designed to cool the unit down at high peak levels of use. This baby does in fact deliver on all fronts, however I am using a powered sub woofer with it as well. In the recent Home Theater review in January of this year they tested this unit with Kenwood and Yamaha and this unit fell short of the other two in performance and quality but they liked it just the same...The Technics had much better specs than the other two...I don't put much faith in these personal reviews...As I own a pair of Bose 301 speakers and love em when all the reviews I read are poor on them...So my message is....simply don't believe everything you read in those audio magazines....Hear this unit for yourself and you'll see that this unit simply delivers. I continue to play it everday at high volumes and it is a real work horse of my system...Thanks Technics for making a receiver that is first rate in affordabilty and overall performance...It's a real winner !!!!!!

Strength:

Sounded good when it worked

Weakness:

died! Bad customer service

I purchased the unit at best buy as an "open box" item. I should've knew something was up when there were FIVE others available! Anyway -- it worked great at first; it was used casually. I had read about the heat problem, so I made sure it was in a "well-ventilated area." I went to use it after about 3 months, and nothing but AM Radio (?????) would play! I disconnected the AM Antenna and it seemed to play in STEREO just fine. I tried to play a DVD in surround sound and NOTHING! I tried a CD (in stereo) and it played, but only when the volume was cranked high. It sounded like $*&@ -- I called their customer service line to get help. BAD IDEA! Very rude. So, I took the unit to an "authorized" repair shop, where the employee there told me it was the FOURTH one she had seen THIS WEEK, and that the product was produced with a part that needed to be replaced (???). This sounds like a recall issue to me. In any case -- DON'T BUY IT!!! I don't quite know what to expect when it returns -- I sure don't want to call their customer "service" line again..... If any of you have any ideas -- email me: bshaddeau@yahoo.com
