Strength:

Lots of outputs and inputs. DTS. Technics (and Panasonic(same company)) offer excellent products at reasonable prices.

Weakness:

Runs hot and fan only comes on when it REALLY gets hot (or at high output)! No sub-woof amp (needs an active sub-woof).

I've always relied on Technics, the company that supplies us middle class folk with solid products at fair prices. I have never had a problem with a Technics or Panasonic product. I still own a Technics Turntable that works as well as the day I bought it 10-12 years ago(nothing like reminiscing to Grand Funk-We're An American Band on the gold vinyl). And recently bought a Panasonic DVD RV-30 that I'm very happy with. After recently having major problems with an Aiwa boombox that died after 6 months, and a Samsung DVD-711 player that just would'nt. I enjoy experiencing the warm, fuzzy, content feeling you get when you plug your new toy in and it actually works...wonderfully! The sound quality has been excellent(I haven't had any hums or static). I have everything plugged into it, Sharp VCR , Sanyo TV, Sony cassette, Sony Playstation, Technics turntable, Fostex 4-track recorder, Panasonic DVD(optical) and Phillips CD. I have 2 large fronts, 2 large surrounds and a center hooked up(no sub-woof yet). The heat doesn't seem to be a problem. Some of the set up controls can be tricky, yet doable(my girlfriends Sony is a REAL trial). The unit offers enough choices/options that most people will be more than satisfied. The DTS decoder sounds awesome(try Saving Private Ryan or Seven). And it looks purposefull and manly(not prissy looking like Aiwa's receivers) and I think it will prove to be as trustworthy and reliable as a old hound. Overall a good value for reliability, quality and the price.

Strength:

Sounds Fantastic! I like the remote just fine, 3 Toslink, lots of places for speakers

Weakness:

Heat, This damn "OVERLOAD" when I put in Speaker B

Ok This reciever is GREAT when your listening to it in stereo or with a center speaker, using the SFC modes. It's clear, it's sweet, and I can use it with my SL-PD9 CD player (Technics).
My only beefs are that when I plug into the B port it gives me an overload but I think I may have a lemon and I'll take it back for repair. The next problem is heat, I tried watching fight club on DVD, ok we set up the whole thing surround sound subwoofer projector big ass screen and whatnot. My buds jammed and we sat down to watch. IT was awesome beutiful sound I almost had an orgasim and the video was nice too. but about the part where they get in their first fight, the damn thing cuts out and I get some bullsheet like "overload" well I'm fiddling with it and it's not working it would work for like 3 minutes and stop I feel the top and it's hotter than the projector (the projector has a lamp you know) and the projector wasn't near the reciver, the reciever was un obstructed and it kept cutting out. After letting it sit for 15 minutes and letting it cool down we could play the movie for another 30-45minutes and it cut again so I was forced to finish the rest with the sound turned way down. Believe me I was pissed off. Anyway that's the problem I have with this reciever it cuts out becuase of the heat. Now I know I can hook a computer fan to it and I was just about to until I learned about this dan B speaker problem I have to get fixed now. It's a darn good thing I don't watch movies a lot... Anyway I love the reciever when it works so I'm banking on me getting a lemon and giving it 4 stars becuase I think it really rocks and when it works I don't think i'll be buying another one for a long time.

Price,power and features

This is the first home theater receiver that I have owned. I am an avid jazz fan and love to listen to music in stereo.
But I thought it was time to move into the 21 century and was worried about losing the ability to listen to my jazz CD's on a surround sound reciever. Well let me tell you not only does this receiver produce OUTSTANDING 5.1 Dolby Digital,DTS and Effect Fields(for music or video). The stereo is Killer. I have Sony DVD player and Technics CD player both hooked up in the Optical Digital inputs in the Receiver(I recommend this)I had it analog when I first bought it. I have Technics 3 way 12" fronts, Polk Audio center and Polk Audio R-10s surrounds. This receiver makes them all BUMP at all levels. the seperation is great and the imaging is beautiful. For the price it is well worth it.
As for the heat I have not experienced any problems because I keep it on top of my Entertainment Center.

Strength:

Great sound very ergonomical and easy to use.

Weakness:

Have not encountered any so far.

Hello everyone, First and foremost, let us go to the heat
issue as reviewed by so many. We all know that all amps.,
heat up specially using five channels simultaneously, I.E.
DTS,Dolby Digital etc. Folks this is normal. I have used
this thing for long periods of time and had no problems
as far as overloading and clipping is concerned. You dont
have to go expensive to get good sound. I have auditioned
several high end receivers and compared them with this unit
and let me tell you, I could not hear any differences whatsoever. With proper set up and connections, you are
guaranteed years of enjoyment!! Do yourself a favor, buy
this baby and you'll be glad you did.

Strength:

Great Bass, clean highs

Weakness:

Did not last

Previously had a Technics Pro Logic Receiver that works great, but wanted 5.1 channels. Got the unit home and after all the connections was surprised to find that the Cd would play regardless of the input selection. Found the same with video. What ever conmponent was playing came through regardless of the input selected. The Surround mode would not work and it was set up correctly. None of the sound fields would work. Was never able to get the test tone to function. After about 15 minutes, all the inputs quit working, inable to get any features at all to work. It was like watching something die a slow death right in front of me. I returned to Sears and bought a Sony STRDE 545. I was dissappointed as I have always been a Technics fan. I am curious if anyone else has had the same experience. This unit was the display model, so it may have suffered considerable abuse.

Strength:

Price (both Dolby Digital and DTS decoders for $200!), decent power output (100w peak x 5).

Weakness:

Runs extremely hot (makes you wonder if anything is melting inside), the remote is tiny and ackward to use for people with larger hands.

First off I'll say that the 940 is a good receiver for someone who wants a simple Dolby Digital setup but doesn't have a lot of cash to spend. The $200 price is a steal for a receiver that has both AC3 and DTS decoders built-in (this kind of feature set usually runs around $300 for solid product).

But for $200, they did cut corners in a few places; the most notable area being the ventilation system. Even though the receiver has an active cooling fan, you can fry eggs on top of it even when you're just listening to the tuner. Sure you can modify the cooling and make things all better, but you really shouldn't have to do this when competitors have much cooler running products right out of the box.

If you own several devices with SVHS outputs, you'll want to opt for a more expensive receiver because the 940 only has composite video inputs. This is understandable for a $200 receiver, however, so this quirk does not effect the receiver's overall rating. It also lacks binding post speaker terminals, but again, understandable for a $200 receiver.

Overall, the 940 is one of the better "budget" receivers. It provides an immersive experience for entry-level home theatre buyers.

SIDE NOTE: At work (Best Buy), we just got a HTIB (home theatre in a box) package from Panasonic that uses a receiver that is essentially the Technics SA-DX940 but has a dedicated discrete 100W amp for the sub it comes with. From an audio enthuisiast's standpoint, the speakers are kind of crappy (as with most HTIB packages) but the package is great for beginners and won't break the bank (about $600).

Strength:

Lots of features fo the price.
Didn't think I'd find a receiver in this price range with decoders for DTS and Dolby.

Weakness:

Runs hot

Great receiver for the price. I paid $200 at Best Buy.Might add a fans as the other review suggested but if I do it will not fit in the cabnet I have? Thinking of adding a fan on top of the unit to force air in when it runs as I can't put anything there anyway. Still worried about the heat so if it melts I'll post another review.
