Strength:

This is the new SA-DX1040 model,
Mega power for the dollar

Weakness:

None

This is the newest addition to the Technics A/V reciever line up and is quite impressive,They have fixed the heat problem by replacing the existing single stage cooling fan with a variable speed fan that speeds up as you crank the juice..

When I purchased this reciever I was simply wanting upgrade from the RD840 I had but did not want to pay the cash that Yamaha products seem to demand,I just happened to see this on display and had the dealer give me a demo.I must say I was truly impressed with the qaulity of reproduction this unit provides,The mids and high hit extremely well. The bass is still lacking somewhat for a 5 way 100 watt system however a powered sub woofer is a quick remedy..

I found the speaker set up and remote to be fairly easy to figure out,The manual is very intriquite in that it has reference points for just about every feature you can imagine.

Overall this A/V is an exceptional unit that will deliver high qaulity sounds for minimal expense

Strength:

price, Dolby D and DTS decoders, sound very well in Dolby D mode

Weakness:

There is no coaxial input, Very bad quality of sound in stereo mode

As I have almost 6 years my older "technics" reciver without any decoders I decided that it is a time to upgrade to home theater system. As I liked technics I bought SA-DX 940 model. When I turned it on with my DVD player(ONKYO 535) the sound in Dolby D was so good and clear that the room shaked(thanks to my powerfull active subwoofer). I was very happy with my new receiver. But when I turned on my CD-player and began listening a stereo sound - it was awful(even with subwoofer on). The bass was very week and when I turned the bass konb to the max there was so big distortion that my ears could not stand it . I thought that the problem was with my speakers, but this receivers sounded much more worse than my older technics. So I took another receiver (Onkyo 787) from my friend to check the speakers and the quality in stereo mode. In one word the sound was perfect. Than I realize that the problem is in 940 receiver. So I sold it. I had it for not more than 2 weeks because I was dissapointed by it. So I bought an "Onkyo" 787 receiver and now can enjoy real stereo and surround quality.

Strength:

Cheap, 3 digital input, good stereo sound,

Weakness:

Bad remote control because we have to chose tuner to power off the Receiver and also for turn on

I have an open box product so firstly I think this product some kind of a bad products. This is my HT configuration:
1. Pioneer DVD 535K: MSeries digital Cable for digital Input
2. B&W 601S2 with lovan stands as front:Cable Talk 3 biwire
3. Infinity Ref Series 2 MK II as suround :bulk surround cable
4. Jamo SW-505E as subwoofer:Eagle Subwoofer cable
5. Old Sony 29" TV
6. I'm using monster cable Interlink 100 for listening Analog CD some people says that this A/V produces bad stereo sound but from my opinion its wrong ..yah you cannot compare with a truly high end system and about the heat problem I using this product at a tropical country and I'm only using a Fan at my room my tips that I'm using a small fan at the top of this A/V and after seeing a movie and listening to some jazz, R&B music about 6 hours this A/V never get hot so I'm very happy.

Strength:

DTS and Dolby Digitial sound great

Weakness:

My speakers suck

This receiver sounds great and runs well.(Yes i have noticed it runs hot but it has not effected the performance at all and I have had it for 6 months)This reciever has more features than all of the other receivers in its price range and sounds great no matter what speakers you use. I am still using the 5 6ohm speakers that came with my Sony mini system and no sub.(although I'm sure decent speakers would help)
The reciever sounds great hooked up to my Playstation 2 using the optical cable. The games that are encoded in prologic sound better on this receiver than on my old mini system. And the DVD's (especially the DTS encoded ones)sound simply fantastic. Music CD's i put in my PS2 also sound great through this receiver in stereo or one of the DSP modes. I also have Direct TV hooked up to the system via an optical cable and normal TV has never sounded better! The payperview movies sound great in dolby digital and all normal shows encoded in prologic sound 2 times better though the optical imput.
If you have components that use optical inputs this receiver definently carries the load for the money with its 3 optical inputs and powerful steller quality sound from everysource in every mode. This receiver has yet to dissapoint me in any way and would buy tecnics again anytime.Great value + Great sound make me happy!

Strength:

Good price for what you get, Many features

Weakness:

heavy, all options not possible through remote

Before even buying the amp i came here to read the reviews, and was slightly like many others put off by the heat problem mentioned by a few. I now know that those reviews are probably just the unlucky ones, as i have no problems with that at all, and then again it does not generate more heat that others i have seen, just to compare. So far together with my infinity prelude left and right speakers, the infinity Qps surrond speakers and infinity center, the sound is making my neighbors watch dvd movies run on a thomson DTH 4200 with me. To be right out clear I am having the sound of my life, and it plays my cd great too,, and beleive it or not even the mtv videos through the tv decoder sound like they could have been on a cd, I recoend it to anyone.the only reason i dont give it 5 stars as overall is i know if i put down 5 times the money i could have probably gotten somthing maybe better.

Strength:

Good sound

Weakness:

poor notice, a little bit heavy, only optical digital plug

I've bought a A/V kit which has the A/V SA-DX940 and a kit of 5 Technics speakers (HT... something). After looking for any info and test on the web, I went accross the review of users on this web site. I was a little bit worry about the heat problem that was notice here. But, as I had a good opportunity to buy it I jumped on it. After plugging all cables, I switch it on. I really enjoyed it. I started to watch a DVD on my SAMSUNG DV511 DVD player. The sound was very confortable to my ears. Then I tested an audio cd (classical), after selecting an programmed effect, i sat down and close my eyes. I felt I was surrounded by the ochestra.
Regarding the heat, I didn't notice any problem so far.

Weakness:

Remote, some hissing in surround mode

I have this hooked up to a pair of paradigm Monitors 3, paradigm CC 370 cnetre channel, Paradigm PS 1200 subwoofer and a pair of Pioneer SDF1K as my surrounds and it sounds great. Ihave had no problems with over heating. Watching the Perfect Storm on DVD blew me away. For the price, nothing beats it.

Strength:

Digital surround at a great price.

Weakness:

Runs warm.

I replaced my rather powerful Pioneer VSX-505S (135Wx5) with this unit because I wanted true 5.1/DTS capability. I was considering a comparable Pioneer that my mother has, but it was much more complicated than the Technics to set up. Hell...the digital didn't even work on the Pioneer until you programmed the optical input to 'on.' But I'm not really here to rag on the Pioneer. I was happy with my old one.

I'm a bit surprised by some of the reviews I've read on this unit. I've had no problems with hissing at all. I use the optical cable - dunno if that makes the difference or not. I'm running Bose 401's for my fronts and Bose Model 100's for center/surround. I did have the same problem one fella had about not getting DTS to work properly, but I don't have a powered sub attached - and from what I've read, DTS assumes ALL (6) speakers are connected. Maybe someone can enlighten me on that topic.

My receiver does indeed run warm. And, despite the warnings to the contrary, I keep it in an area of my entertainment center that has a door and just a few inches clearance above it. Frankly, I'm not too concerned about it. Like another reviewer, I too had an old Marantz Class A receiver that could toast bread for ya and it was older than some of the people posting reviews here!

For the money, it's a very nice unit and I'm satisfied.

I have not noticed the problem with heat as has been mentioned here. I wonder if people are using front speakers with less than 8 ohms impedience and not setting the receiver up for low ohms? I have owned three Technics receivers and a tape deck (over 25 years old) and have never had a problem with any of them.
