Strength:

DSP modes, beautiful sound quality, overall Yamaha build quality

Weakness:

Initial crosstalk problem, Treble/Bass controls don't control rear speakers

I would definitely recommend this to anyone. I thank all the recommendations that I read here before the ultimate purchase of this baby. I bought this from oncall.com for $390 + shipping and ordered type 2 audioquest cable with it. This place is very legitimate and would order from them again in the future.

The 70 watts this reciever comes with is easily enough to power just about anything I would ever own. This crosstalk problem I mentioned was eliminated when a Yamaha support person told me that it would go away once connectors are plugged into the inputs where I heard the FM radio signal. Once I got past that problem, I can't say enough about this product. The DSP modes "concert hall" is heavenly when paired with any kind of studio produced music - it is so real.

I just today picked up a Marantz CC4000 CD changer today and the system has absolutely come alive. My Infinity RS3's sound absolutely perfect I swear! I would also recommend the either of those to anyone interested; I am still in awe of this systems capability. Oh yeah, and the remote isnt' that bad. It may be a bit cumbersome like some say, but I think I will get very used to it soon - it controls anything and everything!

Happy listening,
Ben S.

Strength:

Excellent sound, plenty of power. SVideo. Rated for 4 ohm speakers. Phono input.

Weakness:

Remote stinks. Can't route S-Video ins to composite outs and vice versa. Bass filter fixed @ 90 Hz. Spring clips for center & surround channels.

This receiver is GREAT! Clean, excellent sound. Runs very cool to the touch, with no cooling fan.

I was looking for a Dolby Digital/DTS receiver with SVideo for about $400.

I did a lot of research, comparing this unit with:
Sony STR-DB930 (better components than DE series)
Pioneer VSXD608 (runs hot, no phono input)
Sony STR-DE935 (runs very hot)
Kenwood VR309 (can't run 4 ohm speakers)
Kenwood VR-3080 (horrible remote, more $)
Denon AVR1800 (no SVideo)
Onkyo TX-DS575 (no SVideo, less bass)

I was going to buy this from OneCall for $392 + shipping, decided to give a local dealer a chance: they came within $20 of OneCall, so I bought from the local guys.

One note about Yamaha: they only honor the warranty if you buy from an authorized Yamaha dealer. OneCall isn't listed as one on Yamaha's web site, but I called and they said OneCall is a dealer. Also, Yamaha confirmed that this unit is part-for-part identical to the RX-V595A. The HTR can be sold via mail-order. The RX can't.

This is really a superb unit. It even makes my 30 year old JBL's sound great. It's obvious Yamaha put their time/money/effort where it counts, and not into a bunch of lame gimmicks that you'll never use after the first day.

Strength:

huge power, decent DSP effect........

Weakness:

NO indication of volume level

Can't be happier with it.
Unlike others, I like the remote, and programmed it to control all my electronic stuff- VCR, TV, DVD, Tape Deck, even a 13 years old SONY CD player!!!
It should have an indication of volume and standby mode.

Strength:

Dolby Digital, DTS decoder, DSP, value for price/performance

Weakness:

S-Video switch, volume control

Excellent AV Receiver!!! I bought this from OneCall for about $390, way below MSRP and BestBuy's $499. Looks great with Yamaha 905 CD carousel. Power is great, DSP superb, DD/DTS outstanding. Conected to Infinity RS3s for divine system. Highly recommended. Best value when compared to Onkyo 575, Sony 935 or anyone else.

Strength:

Sound, DTS, Functionality

Weakness:

Remote

I recently switched from a Sony Pro Logic system to the Yamaha and what a huge difference. The sound is rich and really gives you the movie theatre effect when used with a DVD player. You are not overwhelmed with gadgets and buttons. However, the remote could be a little more user friendly.

Strength:

clean powerfull sound, dolby and dts digital capable

Weakness:

needs more s-video inputs

Have owned for 1 week now, bought sony strde 935 and used for 1 month, sony had a lot of features, possibly two many and in turn cut two many corners on amps and switching[bleed thru and popping noise with no source selected and hissing at 0db on vol thru speakers] from the moment i listened to my Mahhniem Steamroller x-mas cd's i new i made the proper choice, sound was clean and powerfull ,have only limited use on dvd and surround settings at this point [trying to finish up x-mas shopping ]but i did set surround levels and experiment a little with a couple dvd's and tape's and also am impressed with soundfield ,remote is a little odd to use but much better than sony's and would like a few more s-video inputs, runs a lot cooler than sony did also, have owned Yamaha 5-disc c/d changer for 6 years now and have not had a bit of trouble, excpect the same from the 5150 ,Yamaha seems to make quality components at a reasomable price.

Strength:

Excellent sound. Runs cool. S-video switching, front and back video inputs.

Weakness:

Awkward remote control, pressure connects for center and rear speakers. No volume level indicator (digital readout).

What a wonderful unit for under $500. Has the features that most mid-level users need including Digital Dolby, DTS and various sound fields. Compared to my old Kenwood, it runs very cool. Sound from Dolby Digital and DTS-encoded DVD's is exceptionally good. I live in Pittsburgh area and find the tuner works very well, too -- not as "down" about the tuner as in some prior reviews for this unit. While there is no "5-channel stereo" as found on Denon 3300 and others, I play my audio cd's using the enhanced pro-logic surround mode and the results are very pleasing. Classical FM stations sound great using concert hall mode. I researched choices very carefully and finally settled for this unit after reading all of the prior reviews. Thank you all for steering me in the right direction. If any of you are sitting on the fence regarding dolby surround vs. dolby digital -- just as everyone says it is "night and day". If you have DVD, go digital on the amp! Great performance for the money so 5 stars on value rating but 4 stars on overall due to spring-loaded speaker connectors (for center and rears) and no control panel readout for volume level. But if you are looking for someting under $500, look no further.

Strength:

S-Video, DSP Selections, 5.1 & DTS, Brand Reputation

Weakness:

Remote, SAT S-Video

Another happy customer from OneCall helped this purchase happen. Despite the Onkyo 575 being in the same price range and prev owning an Onkyo Pro-logic unit for 8 yrs, I liked the idea of S-Video switching onboard (except I didn't realize it was missing SAT/DBS S-Video, what's up with that Yamaha???). Overall, the sound is fantastic and upgrading to 5.1/DTS is MANDATORY with DVD! I really enjoy the output and detailed sound I'm getting from the unit. The remote is a minor weakness, but then again I never purchased a piece of electronics that I could actually brag about the remote. Overall, thumbs up...I just used a S-Vid Switch Box to take care of Yamaha's shortcoming and went with an All-in-One Universal Remote to assist! This unit packs a GOOD punch, quality sound and more than sufficient power.

Strength:

The bass factor, clear and crisp sound quality, dolby digital is perfection

Weakness:

None that I notice...

I have had this receiver for only about three months and it's more exciting than my own boyfriend. We hooked up the receiver to our Bose accoustimass 6 theater system and our Toshiba sd 3109 dvd player and let me tell you people...it rocks. Being a girl...let me tell you I was impressed...great sound quality. We do plan on buying a seperate subwoofer due to the fact that the Bose subwoofer doesn't produce good bass. It's a good buy...
