    Strength:

Amazing improvement over the 4 year old Pioneer 605s which gave me lots of problems and was finally given a new one with the same video glitch. So many that I hate to use it again but will temporarily in another setting. I read the reviews here and bought at Sears for $100 less than BestBuy. I note that ecost.com just raised the price on this to $330 today. Still it is less than Best Buy. The DSP functions flawlessly and the power at 75 watts is amazing. It makes my mid quality speakers sound wonderful. I bought it as part of the home theatre kit. I will use the speakers in my study but the powered sub base is superb with the receiver. DVD's are amazing with Dolby 5.1. Cant wait to try DTS which is suppose to be even better. I could use 2 more s video inputs but it isnt worth the $100 more to get them. I cant imagine the need for more power. Compared to my old 100 watt Pioneer this amp at 70 watts puts out what seems like almost twice the power and absolutely clean sound on all channels. Even FM sounds great. The remote is new apparently because it no longer has the wheel everyone complains about. Still havent mastered it. Everything I have read about the quality of Yamaha audio is true. It seems to be in a class by itself at a medium price. I couldnt be more pleased and just can believe the sound.

    Weakness:

None apparent yet. Compared to the muddy sounding Pioneer, it is wonderful and the lack of channel discreteness.

Dont buy anything else until you listen to this receiver.

Was considering Sony which can get you 100 watts plus lots of extras for this price. Glad I didnt go that way.

Excellent music output, S-video switching, It Pounds!

    Weakness:

    Remote, volume dial.

After my sony fried for the second time, I decided to look into yamaha. I didn't have 700 dollars to spend so when I saw this I was mildly interested. I took a chance and bought it and I tell you, I wasn't disappointed. The Dolby Digital sound is great and although the DTS isn't the best I've heard, you can't find another with DTS for $299. One of the best things about this reciever is that when there is no sound on, there is no hissing sound like on most sony recievers. Unfortunatley, the remote is horrible. It is hard to set up this reciever after the ease of which the sony has. Also a light on the volume dial would have been nice. But those are only cosmetic gripes. They don't deture a bit from the sound.

    Strength:

Price, non-existant distortion, inputs, clarity, power

    Weakness:

Well, I thought the center and surround outputs didn't take banana connections until I saw the last review :) So None.

Most people complain about the remote that came with the receiver, but I rather like it. It controls the unit well and is the only remote that works for my Sony CD player I got which had no remote with it :)

When I was looking for receivers online, I was looking for something around $300 that was high quality. To me, it was between the Sony STR-DE845 and this receiver. When I went to Ultimate Electronics' sound room and did some A/B comparisons, there was no question that the Yamaha's sound output was much clearer, devoid of any distortion. The Sony's sounded dirty and low quality in comparison.

This receiver has 2 optical inputs, 1 digital coax, and RCAs for anything else you can imagine. For my purposes, that is plenty. I have DVD hooked thru optical and will be getting DirecTV in the future (Sony A55 reciever hooked up thru Optical for surround sound television).

This receiver does its job well, which is to take any input I throw at it, and output clear audio to my speakers with no loss in quality whatsoever. For under $300 this is a great receiver and is great for what I want.

I also took advantage of Sears' wonderful price matching policy on this one :)

    My System so far:
    TV: Sony WEGA KV36FV16
    Receiver: Yamaha HTR-5240
    DVD: Sony DVP-S360
    Mains: Boston Acoustics CR8s
    Subwoofer: Boston Acoustics PV600

    Strength:

At the time I bought it, it was the only reciever in its price range to offer DTS.

    Weakness:

    HISS-SSSSSSS

I just went back and re-read all the reviews here for this reciever and I can't believe no one mentions the hiss in Dolby Digital 5.1! It didn't bother me as much before I upgraded my speakers to the Klipsch reference series, but now in DD if I turn the volume up even a little the hiss becomes very audible, although not in pure stereo. In other words, Yamaha skimped on the circuitry for DD. With less accurate speakers, maybe it is not so bad, but if you have even mid-range speakers like I have I think you will be disapointed ....
This was a good deal at the time for the money I paid ($270) but you save more in the long run if you buy better quality to begin with, as I keep discovering.
I'm going to upgrade to a Denon or something like it as soon as I can afford it.

    Weakness:

Hissing, Clipping at higher volume levels

This is definitely a receiver if you are on a budget. I sometimes wish I could have waited a little longer until I can afford the Outlaw receiver ($499!!). The sound is very Decent. My only problem with this receiver is the clipping and small hissing. Below is a summary of my system.

    receiver: Yamaha HTR-5240
    main speakers: Klipsch KLF 20's

This receiver by Yamaha is OUTSTANDING and I think is an excellent example of audio engineering. This is one of the few receivers that you would be hard-pressed to find anything to complain about, regardless of price. From top to bottom this thing rocks, and with the quality of sound and options you'd expect from Yamaha. I tested a Pioneer receiver but sent it back because for a few $$$ more I felt the Yamaha would last longer, be more reliable and had a better LED color, higher quality construction, cleaner sound with amazing color, highs and lows. Forget spending more, this is the one you want!!! Classic, elegant style...just perfect!!!

    Strength:

Excellent power, DD and DTS decoders, Yamaha quality

    Weakness:

Maybe a few more inputs but thats it

The 70 watts per channel seems rather conservative because it puts out more than enough power for a medium sized room. 2 channel stereo is much cleaner than the Sony. DD and DTS are just amazing! Movies have never sounded so good before. I didn't find the remote to be that bad like some other reviewers have. Sure its a little small but it does its job well. Excellent value. I would recommend this receiver to anyone.
