Weakness:
Very Harsh sounding, worthless remote I recenty picked one of these up just to evaluate what yamaha had to offer in this price range. Pleople must like this kind of sound but I found it to be extreemly harsh on the ears, pure headache material. Useing (M&K S-125s which is their warmest speaker)this thing sounds like a cheap Kenwood running KLH speakers with 18 guage wire. Even turning down the treble to almost off does'nt help. Strength:
Versatile and powerful. Delivers very clean sound. Dolby Digital and DTS decoding at a reasonable price.
Weakness:
Remote is confusing, has a high "learning curve." The HTR-5250 is perfect for the home theater, especially if you want to enjoy the wonders of DTS sound. I am using SoundTube speakers (the home theater set from the company that whose speakers are found in Blockbuster and Old Navy) which are very high-quality and require a receiver that can match the sound quality. The HTR-5250 matches the speakers very well, delivering ample power and clarity to make the house shake. The closest thing to real cinema sound. |

Strength:
Exellent clear sound quality, many outputs, I just love the DD and DTS. And Yamaha was known for that.
Weakness:
None as of now. Remote is ok not that bad, but it feel koo when you hold it. I have to say that I am amazed about the sound that Yamaha brings into my home. I replaced my old receiver which was a Sony DE-525 that sounded terrible, and also I wanted to try out the new DTS and DD which my old receiver didn't have. I all I gotta say is WOW! Everything about the receiver is awesome. DSP's are so true compared to the Sony DSP's that sounded like all the same. I'm more of a HT and watch movies a lot. DD and DTS from Yamaha are perfect for my taste. Very different from Pro Logic. I was also considering Onkyo TX-DS575X for the same price, but there were many things that were left out compared to the Yamaha 5250. The 100 watts were important to me and the DSP which the Onkyo was lacking of, I tried the Onkyo at the store and it sounded weak. Didn't like it, Yamaha was #1 for me. Strength:
LOTS of inputs and outputs, and power. More than enough digital and S-Video connections for me. Each effect is customizable. Low heat compared to my older Yamaha receiver. Clean sound.
Weakness:
Bass output seems to need adjustment depending on the sound you listen to; with me being lazy I just kept subwoofer volumn lower so I don't have to get up all the time. Overall it's a good product for the money. If there were anything else I was considering, it would be the Sony STR-DE945. The two-way remote is a plus, but I am not a fan of blue display panels... Laziness factor also stopped me from trying out Sony after this. Similar Products Used: First digital. Used Sony and Kenwood stereo, and Yamaha Pro Logic before. |

Strength:
seemingly unlimited power, highly adjustable HT sound, runs cool, great features
Weakness:
complex remote(good after your trained in using it), no optical ouput for cd, wish effect speaker outputs also had binding post connections like mains do Overall I've been very pleased with this product. It has power to spare! I finally cranked it up to halfway after upgrading my speakers front and rear to AR's. I could only go halfway because my poor Yamaha SW45(70watts) was getting blown off the back and couldn't keep up. This receiver has made it evident that I also need to upgrade my sub. I turned the sub off and continued to crank but became afraid to go any further for fear of neighbors because it was so stinkin' loud. The thing just kept on coming effortlessly. The DSP modes work just as intended and give individual movie viewing flair to different genres of movies. The only downside was the remote. It looks cool but is difficult to learn how to operate. My wife hates it because there is too much to remember when trying to operate the different pieces of our HT system. I know how to use it well but it's not effortless, not second nature as I would like it to be. In the end though I couldn't be happier. This receiver will serve for a long time as the center of my home entertainment. Similar Products Used: old Technics, Onkyo |

Sound and Value!!!
Weakness:
Remote and Sub Woofer output I bought the 5250 because of the reviews I read on here. I must say that I am very impressed. The sound was loud and clear and there was no hissing at all. A common thing I heard in the sony products. The only thing I don't like is that there is very little power going to the subwoofer. I am just going to buy a new subwoofer with more power. Otherwise I love it and I am forever a yamaha customer. Similar Products Used: Sony 50ES. |

Strength:
Very loud and great sound for sub $500,100watt per channel reciever, great DSP quality and cool looking
Weakness:
The remote sucks, too few DSP programs If feel that Yamaha makes, no doubt, the best recievers for the dollar. At $500 you can either get a bad Sony with all the bells and wistles that hide hideous sound, or a stripped Harman Kardon that is not even worth tax. The Yamaha at 70% of its full volume sounds louder, tigther and better than another equal 100 watt Sony reciever at 95%. That is alot. The Concert Hall DSP programs are great sounding. Strength:
Power, S-video inputs, Easy to use and looks cool
Weakness:
None so far ( I've gotten used to the remote. ) After looking and reading all I could on several different recievers, this is the one that came out on top. Yamaha quality at a doesn't-break-your-budget price it just doesn't get much better than that. I'm very happy with this reciever and would recommend it to anyone wanting a very solid center piece for a home system. The remote actually isn't bad once you get used to it.. Give it some time. |

Strength:
This thing has so much power, very clean and clear sound, and just about every hookup i need and more.
Weakness:
None to my ears. I purchased this at Sears for $375 with no tax. I love this thing. i use this for my computer. Music sounds beautiful from this receiver. i have been wanting a yamaha for a long time, but i didn't have the dough. I sold my Technics to get this, and it was completely worth it. It can drive my speakers loud. Another plus is that it has 6 channel input for external decoders (sblive 5.1) and it has preamp outputs for all channels. I give it a 5!!! Even at 500 dollars retail, this is worth it. Similar Products Used: Technics SA-DX940 |
