Strength:

The 2 channel direct mode is excellent!!! It's really nice to see the THX SELECT logo. It's a seal of approval on the amp/preamp of this receiver! And I can hear it!!

Weakness:

I wish it could decode/digitally the sacd/dvd audio thru the digital inputs!!

Wow! A 7.1 channel A/V THX Select receiver with room acoustic optimizing (YPAO), @110 w/chnl @8 ohms!!! for $519.00 + $35.00 Shpng!!!And I sold my Onkyo Tx-sr501 w/ a 6.1 sat/sub system to friend for $150.00! So, I paid just $400.00 for this new receiver!!! It also has all the other decoding: dts 5.1,dts 96/24,dts 6.1 es/matrix,dts neo:6 music/movie and dolby digital (DD) 5.1, DD 6.1 EX, & most important Dolby PRO LOGIC IIX music/movie, which turns any 2/4/5.1/6.1 channel source into TRUE 7.1 channels with stereo back channels and additional steering technology in those back & surround L/R channels! + POST PROCESSING from THX & Yamaha DSP MODES!!!!

Strength:

YPAO really does improve sound. Many, almost too many Sound options. Plenty of power for medium sized room. Learning remote. Mostly ample connection options.

Weakness:

Remote is not backlit. Manual is obscure about some operations. It would be nice to have a 3rd component video input (but not typical for this price range).

This is the current top of the line for Yamaha's HTR series of AV receivers. It is electronically a twin to the RX-V1400 from their RX line. My search for a new receiver initially narrowed down to either a Pioneer Elite 53TX the Yamaha RX-V1400 or RX-V2400. After some more browsing I didn't see any reason to pay a premium for the V2400. Then the 5790 was released and it was easier to get a better price on it. So Voila! A 5790 it is. So far I am pleased. After setting up and using the YPAO (optimizer) there is better low frequency response in the room. I did have to tweak the setting that YPAO just a bit for individual speaker volumes. I ran the surfing pipe scene from Blue Crush and the Rescue of Morpheus from the Matrix, and they both sounded great! I have since watched a couple of other flicks which did not have particularly strong audio elements, and they were fine. The unit has the 6.1 analog inputs for SACD/DVD Audio, which works fine, and Dolby Pro logic IIx. Finally, it has amplified Rear Surround and Presence speaker outputs (only one of these at at a time tho). I haven't tried those but amplified rear surround may get used, as it was one reason to get a new AV receiver. I think I got a helluva deal!
