I purchased the 1103 from Sears at $366/incl. tax. This is an exceptional unit, the sound reproduction and the clarity is amazing. Believe me, I am stubborn when it comes to sound quality and this one is the best that I have heard in its class. I have auditioned other brands such as the Denon,Onkyo,Sherwood Newcastle,Teac,Technics, and Sony; they all had something lacking where the 1103 did not. The the learning remote have access to the dsp's rather than having that 2-3 pause, switching dsp's from the other brands. They all did not have the surround reproduction and clarity that the Yamaha has. The pro-logic and the dolby digital is first rate, even the dpl from my cable, sounds excellant. This unit had the single most important factor among other brands and that is sound reproduction, along with abundance of features and useful dsp's. Don't the hifi stores con you into thinking that the 793 is better, I have spoken to Yamaha several times, they are the exact same unit. In fact, I think the 1103 with gold lettering looks more elegant. If you can get this unit a discount price, because of the new models coming, don't wait, DTS is not that important, Dolby Digital will be the future format standard. FIVE STARS!!!!!!!!!!!!

Strength:

Clean power reserves, marvelous Dolby Digital decoding; progammable remote.

Weakness:

Programmable remote.

I am very pleased with this unit. The feature set is just right. The sound from CD's is clean - bad source material sounds absolutely horrible through this unit.

The DVD reproduction is tremendous. The programmable remote is very versatile, however, it does require determination on the part of the user to really extract the last iota of functionality.

The system really has to have very good loudspeakers upstream.

Similar Products Used:

None.

I am pleased with this receiver so far. I got it on close out at Sears for $450. I purchased it over the Sony 935 because of the Sony's lack of S-Video.

Strength:

Great DSP modes! It is difficult at times to tell if the surround speakers are on, unless you turn them off. This is a hallmark of Yamaha's DSP modes, I had read, and it's a very accurate statement, indeed. The "Effect" On/Off button on the remote makes it very easy to compare the sound with or without a DSP mode being used. Lots of clean power with this unit. The Dolby Digital decoding seems to be excellent. I've watched tons of DVD's and am always amazed - it's like "you are there or they are here" sense of realism. Same goes for the "Rock" and the "Jazz Club" DSP modes. I no longer listen to music in "plain" 2-channel stereo - it sounds "dull" once you have used the DSP modes. This is a very easy unit for the non-enthusiast to use (such as your significant other). It has a great learning remote (see "Weaknesses", however). Simple, yet comprehensive, on-screen displays. In this price range, it was an excellent choice to have purchased.

Weakness:

The learning remote is a bit tricky to get the hang-of. It's easy, once you get it figured out, but I had to spend some time, poring over the owners' manual, and had to even make a couple of phone calls to Crutchfield. But, it was worth it.

If you're not wanting to spend a whole lot of money, this receiver has a lot to offer. I've been enjoying mine for well over a year now, and have never been disappointed. And right now, you can most likely get one on clearance, since a newer model has now been introduced.

This receiver is now discontinued, which is a shame. I assume the reason for the discontinuation was the lack of DTS decoding. I purchased mine from Sears on sale for $599, choosing it over a Sony STR925. This reciever has a very adequate amount of power for HT and music. I'am currently driving a pair of power hungry Magneplanar 1.6's with no problem. I love this receiver and recommend it to anyone who can still find one. For the price it can't be beat.

I Don't know how much more one could ask for in the under $1000.00 catagory. This is as fine a receaver as I have ever heard. The power output is nothing short of incredible! Almost every feature you could ask for. This thing sounds wonderful and drives my 4OHM Jamos without a problem (not a feat to be taken lightly). The remote although thorough is stupid! The DSP modes are nice to play with but I tend to leave them off. It has great stereo and 5 channel sound
with a 70mm movie mode (the only DSP mode I use). The 1103 and the 793 are the same unit! They have different specs because on is sold at Sears and the other is sold at dealers. Just examine the outside of the units and the fetures and you will see. If you can still get one, YOU SHOULD !

dont let anybody tell you that the r-v1103 is a bad reciever, first of all that one guy wasnt very smart to try to drive two- 8ohm yamaha speakers, along with two-4 ohm cerwin-vegas.this guy cant be very smart,no wonder he fried his 703.the rv-1103 has great sound, not alot of bass but adding maybe a subwoofer will increase the bass alot.i dont imangine anybody will be ever to get the 1103 again but if so,do it ,it is really good.
