PRODUCT WILL LAST MAYBE A YEAR AND WORK FINE. BUY AN ONKYO OR HK OR MARANTZ. EVEN MY HOLD PIONEER HAD BETTER SERVICING. YAMAHA IS GOING TO BE OBSOLETE SOON.
Weakness:
AS YOU HAVE READ PREVIOUSLY. DO NOT BUY YAMAHA UNLESS YOU WANT TO BUY ONE EVERY YEAR. DO NOT BUY YAMAHA PRODUCTS. THE TWO RECEIVERS THAT I HAVE BOUGHT OVERHEAT EASILY AND THE POWER DIST. SEEMS FLAWED. YAMAHA WILL NOT SERVICE IF THERE SEEMS TO BE A POWER FLAW. THEY SAY BOTH WERE DAMAGED DUE TO LIGHTNING. NOT SO. ALL MY OTHER RECEIVERS AND PLAYERS WERE PERFECTLY FINE. BASICALLY THE WARRANTY IS USELESS. Similar Products Used: HK 325 ONKYO 700 KENWOOD 6070(GETS REAL HOT) |

Weakness:
Remote could be better, but I use the Marantz RC2000, so it's not critical for me. Difficult Setup I replaced by Yamaha DSP-A1 and Yamaha TX-950 tuner for this unit - net cost, thanks to EBAY, less than $300. Same Yamaha quality and sound, but with more of the features that are important to me. Like component video switching and Zone 2 Outputs. The Zone 2 is especially important to me because I a Home Automation System with an AV distribution center. So now, someone can listen to something on our changer downstairs, while someone else watches the Replay unit upstairs. Very cool. Recommended. There is a undocumented RS232 port on the back with Remote in/out jacks. If anyone knows how to make us of these, then please email me.... |

Strength:
Good sound on music, and home theater.
Weakness:
weight. Before I shop for this receiver, I have read most of the reviews on this web page. I have to agreed on the most listeners out there complaint about the remote. To me I think if you spent some time play around on this sytem, you wouldn't have any problems. You probably know that Yamaha has come out a new one RX-Z1, beleive me I have tested on my system, the sound is the same, except the Z1 have added a lot of extra stuffs that I don't needed. Overall the RX-V1 it's a good receiver for music, and home theater. |

Strength:
DSP sound fields, DTS & DD decoding, more than enough power to satisfy, outstanding build quality
Weakness:
NONE Outstanding Receiver, especially when you consider the price there going for now. Compared this receiver to others (Denon, Onkyo, etc...) in its original price range (2500+) and it clearly holds its own against them still. I like the DSP modes and the way they add spaciousness to any recording. I also like the DTS & DD decoding ability of this receiver. In short, if you can still find one, I highly recommend you buy. SOUND TO DIE FOR SWEET CONNECTIONS ON BACK AND FRONT EXCELLENT BUILD QUALITY AND FEATURE TWEAKS THE ABSOLUTE BEST DECODERS FOR SURROUND SOUND
Weakness:
SORRY THE FREAKIN' REMOTES SUCKS, YOU HAVE TO PUT ON GLASSES TO SEE IT, TINY LITTLE BUTTONS AND STUPID LAY-OUT AND YOU MUST THINK BACKWARDS TO USE IT ?!!! I ASK WHY??? HIGHLY DISSAPOINTED IN ALL RECENT YAMAHA REMOTE DESIGNS!!!! I think the sound and quality of the RX-V1 is excellent. The sound is not harsh at all but yet reels in a liveness, a natural sound through the midrange to the high end as well as the smooth bottom of the bottom end of the sound spectrum. This amp really Rocks too. No wimps allowed when playing this bad boy!! The surround sound modes are unbelievably spacious and precise, A you-are-there' feel to the sound image!!! Amazing DTS and Dolby Digital Surround sound. The best digital to analog decoder chip technology,on this planet,Period!!!! Yamaha does make one of thee' best decoder chips and sound field chips on the market. Of course only until next year and Yamaha out-does itself again. My only complaint about this RX-V1 reciever is the Remote!!!! Let me tell you that yamaha must like torturing it's customers by making some of the world's worst remotes!!@#@!@ Any Manufacture out there could out do Yamaha's remote design engineers on their worst day, I think it is time for Yamaha to fire these idiots and start making decent remotes again for their receivers and Dvd players, HELLO YAMAHA IS ANY ONE HOME?!!! OR LISTENING TO THE CUSTOMER??? HELLO??? Other than the lousy useless frustrating remote, I think the RX-V1 is fantastic!!! Pure EAR-GASM........... and YES it does weigh-a-ton. Awesome in 5 or 7 ch HT; excellent main-center ch. separation in HT; warm sound; near audiophile-quality 2 ch audio (I've heard $5000 separates that sound just as good); I only give a value-rating of 3 because of the notorious ch. drop out, but a 5 for overall sound reproduction
Weakness:
1) Remote - but I don't care 'cause my Marantz RC2000x does the job. 2) Expereienced rear-left ch drop-out. Applied suggested RCA plug fix into affected ch's pre-out and that fixed it. I spoke with a Yam rep who said problem is the video board which can be replaced to solve the problem. Takes 5 days by authorized Yam shop. However, I did pick up an extended warranty. I figure I'll haggle my way into a Z1 if they can't fix the drop-out problem considering CA's no lemmon-law and the fact that the V1 is discontinued (laugh all you want, I've done it several times - I'm a good haggler :-) I finally demo’d the RX-Z1 about a month ago on the Boston Reference VRM60’s and PV800 Reference sub (which isn’t in my opinion the best Z1-speaker match). Nevertheless, I was floored by the 2 ch audio (didn’t need to demo HT because I was convinced enough). I checked the Z1 specs and noticed it shared the same linear damping as the V1 so I figured they should sound close. I demo’d the V1 on the same speakers and I was not surprised to find that they sounded nearly if not completely identical. I next demod the V1 vs. the Denon 5803 which I normally prefer for in 2 ch audio because of its warmer sound. I was surprised to find that the 5803 was actually brighter and a bit sharper than the V1. That was it for me – I took the V1 home. Now for the final testing – the V1 on my Pinnacle Gold Aerogels + Pinnacle Classic Gold Mini-Monitor Fronts/Surround + Classic Gold Center (not the mini). First test was 2 CH audio from Sting to anything jazz. The first thing I noticed was that the brightness, as compared to the 2095 I upgraded from, was completely gone but the clarity and definition were still pronounced. The bass was also tighter and not as muddy as the 2095. I don’t normally crank my system up, but at about –20 db the V1 didn’t flinch as compared to the 2095 that tends to distort voice frequencies at higher output. Next was HT – Jimmy Neutron was in the DVD player (Sony DVP-NC655P) so I started with that. WOW! The first and most obvious difference to the 2095 was the main channel separation – V1 was so much more precise. The next thing I noticed was the center – not as tinny as the 2095, but more crisp and realized and while still a warm tone (very close to the Denon center if memory serves me). The problem with the 2095 center ch. that seems to compress voice frequencies when say in the middle of an explosion was solved in the V1. All channels are clearer. I know it’s unfair to compare the 2095 to the V1, but that’s what I upgraded from so sorry to the 2095 owners out there – it’s still a great receiver. Similar Products Used: Yamaha RX-V2095 |

Strength:
Great sound and lots of flexibility when it comes to inputs and outputs
Weakness:
It weighs a ton! I was auditioning some A/V receivers at a local stereo store when I came across the RX-V1. The unit was on sale because the store got a lot deal from Yamaha. The original price was $2800 and they let me take it home for just under $1200. Of course the money was not as important as the sound. After listening to a few different styles of music on various brands of speakers I was convinced that I wanted this receiver. Once I got the unit home I opened it up and discovered how hard it was to hoist it up to the shelf on my stereo cabinet that is just under six feet. This thing weighs a ton! Once I got it hooked up I sat back in my recliner and turned it on and selected the CD input. Immediately I noticed the sound difference between this unit and my old Carver equipment. The music seemed much clearer and crisp without sounding raspy when playing in two-channel stereo. One drastic improvement over my old equipment was highly noticeable when playing live music CD’s. I was amazed at how well this unit sounded with a few of my favorite live CD’s, which I am not a big fan of. After listening to music I put a DVD in and went through a few of the different surround settings. After watching a complete movie the first thing I noticed is how well the unit smoothes the sound between all the speakers. For the first time I could hear many different sound effects that was not noticeable before, and I have watched this movie a hundred times. None of the speakers would overpower the other, and the unit just seemed to produce a nice even sound. Some of the effects are not to my liking, but the ones I do like are all adjustable. My wife noticed these improvements and she does not normally pay much attention to the quality. However, the improvements were so drastic that even she noticed. This unit was defiantly the best purchase I have made in years when it comes to A/V. Needs a lot of space This is a truly great A/Vreciever. Yamaha captured all the DSP modes, to make them sound like you are at the place that u are listen in. The 6.1 sound field is truley a nice touch, but the nicest thing is they put in the the front effect chanels to make a 8.1 setting that makes any live concert sound supreme. The other revieves that I have read on this page that people are complaining about this reciever have there heds up the ass. |

only 2 channel stereo remote (first style not the pronto one ) 10,000 useless sound field modes how can the flagship model not have 5 or 8 speaker stereo-only 2 work in true stereo mode, yamaha must have had a major brain fart here-they force you to use those damn sound field modes-they all stink,i cant stand any of them. the amps sound very clean . never had a channel drop out (knock on wood ) i dont have the new style remote-i wish i did the one with mine stinks. lfe works great with my sub my speakers never imaged that well with my old jvc-they opened up alot when hooked up to the rxv1 -and the jvc had more power- 120 to 110 granted they are only wharfedale emeralds 97s - i got them for the jvc didnt get the rxv1 till 6 months later. plan on replaceing them with norh. incredable sound in 8 channel when using a dvd and prologic. tuner is beyond good i love it. never gets hot like my old jvc. glad i didnt pay full shot for this- what i paid used is about what its worth. its about even to my friends outlaw. definately not better the shop wouldnt refund on used equipment other wise it would have went back. and i would be typing a review for a outlaw reciever. all i can say is that i learned to live with it. you should not have to learn how to live with the top of the line unit. Weakness:
Power amp section sounds quite horrible, and even worse for music performance in stereo. Continuous Channel drop-out problems make me sick. Over-Optimistic power rating. Power also diminishes the more speakers you connect. I (Unfortunately) bought this European Model DSP-AX1 "flagship" AV Amp in July 2000, a couple of months before the Excellent Denon AVC-A1SE came to the market.... This is the WORST purchase i have ever made in my life. For a start, from Day one i started having channel drop out problems to the point that it''s impossible to watch a full length movie without at least one channel muting itself. When paying so much for an AV amp you should not be expected to plug in and out RCS cables and switch the amp off and on in order to watch a movie! The power amp section of this amp has an over-optimistic 110w per channel output that sounds quite awful, with compressed, undynamic and very colored sound with light bass, poor treble and 2 dimensional soundstage (when listening in Stereo). It''s even worse with the impedance selector at 8ohms and improves slightly with the selector at 4ohms (Even when driving 8 ohm speakers!) Contrary to the power amp section, the pre-amp section is quite good with very good DAC''s, low noise, and only minor influence to the overall sound. The sound of most CD players is greatly improved when using a Digital connection to the AX-1 and letting the AX-1 do the Digital to analogue conversion. Hooking up my 1992 Mission Cyrus II Amp to the main pre-out output solved both the problem of the dropouts for the main channels and improved the sound by several light years with more bandwidth, clarity, detail, dynamics and POWER (despite it''s very concervative 2x50w RMS rating) I also connected my 1987 2x25w Mission Cyrus I amp to the L/R surround ouputs and the same happened for the rear channels.... Now i need to find another Cyrus to use for the front and rear centre channels since i still have VERY frequent drop out problems and i''m not using the Front and Rear centre speakers anymore. I desperately want to sell this AV amp especially because of the dropout problems but for the same reason nobody will want to buy it.... I feel like i trashed $3300 down the drain and there is no way i could recommend this product to anyone. Similar Products Used: Denon, Marantz |
