Not really a weakness, but 50+ DSP modes are wasted on me. I needed a new receiver with Dolby Digital and DTS to replace my old Pro Logic reciever. Started looking at Denon 4800 and Yamaha RX-V3000. I found the Denon didn't have amps for all channels built in, so leaned toward the Yamaha. I then found I could get the RX-V1 for a few hundred more than the 3000, and haven't looked back. I love it. I run Klipsch speakers and can bring the house down with shear volume. The sound is crystal clear with no hint of distortion. I can't comment on the quality of Dolby Digital or DTS, since I don't have another receiver with that capability, but these formats are amazingly better than Pro-Logic, especially in ES mode. Looks good, big so you can impress your friends.
Weakness:
Poor sound quality for audio. Remote does not learn satellite codes even though it says ok when learning. Unit broke down twice within 3 months. Pure waste of money. I don't even use it anymore for audio it's so bad - I simply go straight into my amp from the CD player using the gains as preamps. Had two major problems -audio completely cut out within 2 weeks of having it and now I lost one of the rears. Yamaha replaced the entire unit the first time but I can't be bothered geting it fixed the second time. Similar Products Used: Parasound avc 2500. |

None that I can see! Thanks to Mike from Maryland e-mailing back and telling me of his experience with the RX-V1 I bought one this past weekend. The B&K sounded very good also, but I could hardly justify the extra $1,400 off the sale price I got. I have had great luck with Yamaha Products for over 20 years. This thing is a beast. It has more power and dynamic headroom than I will ever need. The sound is great right out of the box, and I'm sure it will only get better. I also got the free RAV-2000 Universal remote. Sounds Great, Looks Great, Is Great! Again, Thanks Mike, your right you can't go wrong for Music or Video. Similar Products Used: B&K AVR307 |

Power and features for the price
Weakness:
Need better remote I had the Rxv-1000 and thought it was a great buy for the mula but got ahold of one of these for a great price. Big difference in power and sound fields. So far I am very impressed whith everything except I can't program my new Hitacki Hi-def TV to work with the remote (help!?). The powered rear center does make a difference. I will write a more extensive review when my monitor 9's come in ( another great bang for the buck). I compared it to the Denon 4800 (no powered rear center) and the Pioneer in the same price range. The Yamaha blew them away. Too bad I don't have the 2900 for a Denon 5800....very nice. Similar Products Used: Rxv-1000 AVR25(not really similiar!) |

Strength:
frontal simplicity
Weakness:
110 watts per channel The RXV1 would be my choice receiver providing there wasn't another choice. Denon AVR5800 is my choice only because it zeroed in on the features that I thought to be more important, such as 170watts per channel as opposed to 110for the V1. I didn't care that the V1 had 54 soundfields; I doubt I will ever use more than 8 of them. The Denon carries the THX certification which puts it ahead of the V1 for movie viewing. If I can exchange the V1 for the 5800 plus a few more dollars tacked on I would do it because I prefer a Cadilac that goes 150mph as opposed to 120mph. I would never know the difference between the two until you have them side by side. |
