Strength:

Great for Home theatre and music. Not much competition at that price point.

Weakness:

The dealer where I purchased it. If you can avoid SoundsAround. They sold me a damaged center channel along with this unit. When I tried to exchange it they told me I was out of luck and would not refund my money or exchange it!! I will take my electronics dollar elsewhere from now on!

Excellent choice for Home theatre and music. I use mine about 50/50 for each. I had demonstrations of quite a few different one''s including Yamaha, Denon, Sony, Harmon Kardon and others. The RXV1000 was the clear winner in Home theatre while the Denon was pretty close in listening to music. However, for the price the Yamaha cannot be beat. I lucked out and got mine for $799 Canadian for a brand new unit. Regular list price was $1300. They were making room for the RXV1200. THe RXV1200 actually is only 80 watts per channel while the 1000 is 100 watts per channel. You do need a separate amp to drive the 6th channel in the 1000 - but that is not something I am using right now anyway. I wanted the extra power to drive my Paradigm Studio 100s. Overall, I am very pleased with it. For the money you cannot go wrong. THe RXV1 and the new RXV3200 are also great but I could not justify the price difference for them.

First of all thank you to all the previous reviewers for their input on the rx-v1000. I''ll be making the purchase this weekend. For all of you who want to know what this mystery RS-232 chip is, I obtained information from an article: Sound and Vision magazine Feb/March 2001. It states that the RS-232 chip is " a connector for Panja,Creston and other multi-room control systems" Thought you might like to know.

Strength:

Attractive unit - better power and overall HT sound than the Denon 2802. Great learning remote. 5 Channel stereo for music will make you forget you ever listened to two speakers. Power. HT listening reaches a new level.

Weakness:

Nothing I''''ve found thus far.

A superb purchase. This model originally sold for about $1000 (U.S.), and was worth the price then. A solid performer for Home Theatre, as well as music. The 1000 is the predecessor to the RX-V 1200 (which has the 6th channel amp, and Pro Logic 2). The 1000 has more power, and is overall a tighter unit than the 1200.

Strength:

Excellent HT sound Decent stereo reproduction Great remote control Good build quality and look

Weakness:

Only decent stereo sound You pay for a lot of options you won''t use No real support for 6.1 No support for 7.1 and 8.1 - but I don''t think that''s important No support for THX - but Yamaha''s proprietary version is every bit as good

I''ve had this unit for a week now, and I''m reasonably happy with it. I''ve bought it to replace the 620 I had before. Althuogh the two are rated the same by Yamaha (at 100W RMS), this model has more power (the 620 has only 90W actually.) The 620 did a decent job at HT, but was lacking in stereo. This model does an excellent job in HT, and reaches an acceptable level in stereo - but not more than that. However, it does have several advantages over the 620 and 800. First of all, the remote control is excellent. You can use it to control all of your components (and I have a few) quite comfortably, and you rarely need to get the other remotes for component specific operations. It is learning, and has a luminescent display (very small), but not luminescent buttons (why?!) Moreover, the build standard of the 800 and 1000 is higher than of the 620. THD is lower and dynamic power is higher. It has the mysterious rs-232 input - what the heck are yamaha planning to do with it? I''m guessing to upload new dsp modes - nobody needs those anyway. It has a rear center pre-out - but with no amplification! So there''s nothing you can do with it really. I''ll be very happy to hear if anyone knows where I can get a decent mono amp with similar performance to drive the rear center, for under$100. I don''t think so... The pre-outs and pre-main couplers are a nice touch, but anyone who is seriously planning to use them will get a high end model anyway. So I guess the only justifications to get this unit over the lower 620 and 800 is the slightly better stereo sound and much superior remote control, along with a more respectable look. I still plan to upgrade to the 2200 or 3200 as soon as I have the doe, so that my stereo sound will reach a good level, but this unit should satisfy anyone who is not an audiophile, and is almost perfect for HT only use. For anyone who wants both good HT and stereo, you should consider denon 2801 or 3802, which I believe should give a better answer.

Strength:

Power, Sound quality for movies, 6.1 (DD EX Matrix, DTS-ES), future proof, 32-bit DSP, value and many more!

Weakness:

Setup and Manual can be improved (but minor)

This receiver is truly awesome for movie soundtracks (DD, DTS, DD EX, DTS-ES, even pro-logic) due to its clarity and dynamic range (perhaps the new 32-bit DSP Yammy chip makes a huge difference). If you use a receiver mainly for DVD movies and digital sound, this unit is for you. I have compared this to the latest Denon AVR-2802 (which I have returned), the RX-V1000 gives more cinematic sound and punch for movies as if you are in a movie theater, which I don''''t get from the Denon (BTW costs much more in Canada and only a 24-bit DSP processor). But in CD music, I’ll give the Denon just a slight edge. I hooked up my old Yamaha RX-V595 as my pre-amp for the rear back center channel and works likes a gem. "Gladiator", "T2", "Toy Story 2", and "SWPMEp1" sounded phenomenal in 6.1 (Matrix and DTS-ES), hearing things that weren''''t there before. The RX-V1000 has many inputs and future proof too. I have also auditioned both the new Yamaha RX-V1200 (cost a little more, less power 80watts X 6) and the RX-V2200 (costs much much more), and I don''''t feel that the upgrade for DPL II (don''''t watch much cable TV or VHS) or DTS-ES Discrete (can''''t hear differences between this and DTS-ES Matrix) are necessary for me either. The RX-V1000 has good value for the money. Highly recommended!

Strength:

Made the movies come alive. Could'nt get up from the couch once the movie started. 6.1 stereo mode sounds great.

Weakness:

I need to increase volume two fold with effects compared to 6.1 stereo mode.

So far this has been a pleasant experience for me. I used to own Yamaha's entry level RXV-493 and the difference in the movie experience is fonominal! I cannot move from the couch until the movie is over and even then I want to watch it again. The remote is combersome at first but once you read thru it and work with the macro's it begins to make sense. Although, I have the macro turning my cable box on last when watching TV and it still requires me to source select the cable box again to switch channel which can make it diffucult on a guest or my wife. Besides that extra step the remote works everything I own with ease and does everything I ask of it. Its actually kind of fun once you learn everything it can do. I only have one negative so far and I've checked my Impedence Selection and the main level selection to make sure its set to normal. The sound seems to significantly decrease when I switch from 6.1 stereo mode to effects off when listening to CD's. I prefer to listen to my music with my Front left and right only so this bothers me somewhat. Any help here is appreciated. All and all I'm very happy with this receiver and would purchase it again if I had the chance. I give this an overall rating of a 4 until I figure out the music difference with the effects off.

Strength:

Best combination of sound,price,quality,reliability
Looks Great
Sounds great

Weakness:

Remote not backlit
Doesn't store volume level for various inputs

I'm not a diehard enthusiast(yet), but I wanted a quality system that would last me for years. Yamaha has a good reputation for quality, and purchasing online I wanted to go with a product that was reliable. The receiver is great. It does everything I want, and sounds good. I think this unit is the best combination of sound, quality, price and performance you can buy. I like how the HK look and they supposedly sound excellent, but I didn't want to fuss with reliability problems.

My only gripes are that I often watch baseball and listen to the home town commentators on the AM tuner. When I occasionally flip back to the cbl/sat sound to watch a commercial often the radio volume and cbl/sat volume need to be at different levels. It would be nice if the unit remembered that the last volume level for the tuner was x db and the last volume level for the cbl/sat was y db. Or if you are listening to a cd loud and forget to turn it down before you switch to tv you can be in for a surprise. It would be nice if the remove was backlit, not just flourscent.

You can't go wrong with this unit.

Check out reliableaudiovideo.com for great prices and fast service. My speakers and receiver both arrived in perfect condition.
