Strength:

Great Power, clean sound, durability, learning remote

Weakness:

none

I've had this amp since 93' and it still rocks today. I've upgraded to the RXV-3000 a year ago for DD/DTS. I still use my 1070 for 2 channel music with older infinity speakers (RS series-great speakers-had since 95'). I've heard other current sub-1k amps in the market today, and they can't compare with the 1070 on 2 channel music. This amp still gives me the power and clean sound i need.

I have used my RXV1070 for 5 years. I really like the bass output on my Infinity RS425 and the cleanliness of the volume, even at high levels. Rears sound great and are so easily adjusted, as are all other speakers. I thinkt he Yamaha excels in the "processign mode" area of audio. THe stadium, rock, jazz, 70mm film, dolby enhanced are awesome.THe S video switching is good too. Also, the 2nd set of outputs are great for turning on and running the house speakers too. I cna run all the living room HT surrounds as well as pump the B channels out throuhg my house speakers at the same time! THat saves me from buying a seperate amp.
Now that I have an AVR5700 and Mission speakers (just arrived last week) I had to give up all these feautres and the amp is sitting ina box. But it has been very good to me and I reccomend to anyone tryong to get a good HT system on a low budget.

Strength:

good power on front channels, learning remote, S-Video switching

Weakness:

not equal power for surrounds, older model with Dolby Pro-Logic

I've had this receiver since it first came out. I bought it to replace a top-of-the-line, 2-channel JVC receiver because I wanted surround sound. Wow! What a difference even on straight stereo. The front panel on the JVC would dim in time with the music when I turned it up - no such problems with the Yamaha.

I still use the 1070 today to power my home theater, and also to drive six pairs of in-wall and in-ceiling speakers throughout the house.

I have Snell C/IV's that could probably stand a bit more power, but the Yamaha has done very well with them. It'll play much louder than I can stand, without clipping. I think more power would get me deeper bass, but since I have a powered sub, I'm not missing much today.

I'm shopping for an upgrade now, mostly because I want Dolby Digital, but also because I have enough spare cash to move up to separates. The 1070 has pre-in/outs on the main channels, so I might keep it in the system to power my Snell J surround speakers and just buy a high-end 2-channel amp for the mains. I wish I could access the left and right surround channels independently so that I could use them to drive the whole-house audio system.

I rate this piece very highly because when I bought it, it was the best I auditioned in its price range ($1k), and today it is still giving me great sound. Too bad it isn't upgradeable to Dolby Digital.

Strength:

P o w e r.

Weakness:

No DTS.

I must say that I am not an Audio buff but I can say I have a good ear for crisp clean sound. I like to listen music loud with lots of bass crisp mids and crystal highs, and I can say this product delivers. I am running Cerwin vega E-715 with the 1070 and the sound is extremely high end. My neighbors will agree that it is no mini system to say the least..No joke it hits you hard. This thing delivers more than I need. Wich is unheard of when playing a favorite tune..But is true with the 1070.

If you get a chance to pick one up, do it.

Sometimes I like used gears better for the obvioius reason ($$), if I’ve got a chance to see it in my eyes and chat with the owner to find out how he/she’s been using it.
Ever since my trusty old entry-level Marantz (circa '80) has finally ceased its fire about a month ago, I’ve been in a search for the best possible burgain available for my Tannoy PBM8 (anyone know this model? –probably not). Alas, what I found was this 5yrs ole RX-V1070 on a company web’s classified. The guy who’s selling actually introduced me to this review section but found there’s only one posting - a bit suspicioius? - First yes, 1070 was no longer in the market at least for a few years, as 2092/95 took over. – But after I saw those current lineups at store and finding the construction of those were much less impressive than 1070, I decided to give a try even without AC-3.

As it turns out to be, it works pretty well with these tiny Tannoys. – Or, is it only me thinking that why Japanese still cannot make kick-ass audio speakers after all these years… I heard a comment on ‘humidity’ and ‘climate’ factors of which these acoustic engineers reside. I wonder if there are some of those microbrew-type killer speaker manufacturers in Luisiana of Mississippi, etc.

(No, I don’t care much on that neither, because I won’t even be worrying about getting HDTV or even DVD for a while. I’d want to get S-VHS before that. - Spending more than quarter of my annual income to a killer boombox is not my idea. I’d rather buy Yamaya C-7 or go for a month cruise to Tibet, etc.)

Pro Logic and DSP are indeed coming from the age of pre-refinement (duh, - just turn it off), as though it will also ultimately lead to the all-age PRIMODIAL problem, in attempt to reproduce sounds that are ‘RECORDED’.

***
If you run into one of these, stop and think again what you really need.

Strength:

One powerful mother. Oustanding sound. very flexible. The Second best receiver I ever had

Weakness:

wish it had upgradeable inputs for external DD/DTS decoder. Hard to replace.

I cannot say enough about this receiver. In its hey day it was the ala creme of the crop, bad to bone, and I got on a clearance for a measely $415.00!!! You couldn't ask for a better sounding unit. I put against any other brand Kenwood, Sony, Pioneer, Technics, Onkyo, Sansui, Aiwa, JVC, Sherwood, even Harmon Kardon. Denon probably will give it a good run for the money. The only receiver will probably beat and I had one of these babies is Nakamichi. Can drive any speaker system out there no matter what the size, efficiency, or price. I would think it would satisfy even the most indiscriminate listener. this baby for now a days in the awake of DD/DTS, for the audiophile is really into music and much less into home theater even though it does have some theater capabilities.

This is an excellent receiver which I consider at par with the DSP A1 and the 3090 models. The internal circuitry is well-designed and built (toroidal transformer). This gizmo weighs almost 40 lbs and power packed with a 165 watts dynamic headroom (stereo)and 110 watts x 3, 35 watts x 2 (20hz-20khz thd .015). Can power up almost any speaker, tried it with Jamo Cornet, Kef C, Celestion, Monitor Audio and BW 300s. I was quite surprised that there was no posting for this outstanding receiver. This piece of equipment beats them all in the audio section, powerful yet clear sounding at high playing levels. Has s-video terminals, bass extension, rec out, preouts, front effects. Beats all current Yamha models starting from the 992 to 300s. Only limitation is that it isn't DD ready but this isn't stopping me from giving its much deserved 5 star rating!

Strength:

great sound with low distortion at high levels. RELIABILITY!!! (had since 94 with no problems)

Weakness:

pre dvd,ac-3, dolby digital

Cant say enough just wish it had newer dvd options but it was before that. I recomend Yanaha to everone after I bought this. I am back overseas and will buy more yamaha as the prices are great.
