Strength:

Build, soundfields. pre-out, 8 channel, 6 channel inputs

Weakness:

remote unbalanced, its a receiver

I am biased to yamaha's products. I really liked their 7 channel soundfield processor. As digital came of age, I figured it was time to upgrade to DD & DTS.

I was upset that there is no add-on product in the US without main channel amps. This was the most affordable solution (felt the extra cost of the RX-v1 would not make sense).

USE:

It takes a bit of listenning and time (but this is why we do this, right?) to get the soundfields well balanced. The receiver responds well and I am very pleased.

A mojority of my listening is music (classical & jazz). When I do watch a DVD it is really impressive. Reference disks I use are Apollo 13, Saving Private Ryan, Gladiator, etc. Impressive levels of soundfields. great clarity of dialogue.

For music, the 6 channels are great. I really like the broader ambience given by the front effect speakers.

If you want a great receiver, do not overlook this one.

Strength:

Build, quality of internal components, sound

Weakness:

On screen setup

In the quest for a good AV receiver, I did alot of auditioning and reading of reviews. I didn't want to purchase an inferior product or one that I'd need to upgrade in a couple of years.

After nearly a year of research, I narrowed my choices to the Yamaha RX-V3000, RX-V1, Denon AVR4700 and AVR5800. Both companies produced excellent units and each had their own strengths. Being a realist, price was also a factor.

My final choice was the Yamaha RX-V3000. It had the features vs. price I was looking for.

The sound is rich and warm, channel separation and clarity is wonderful. I am running all Axiom speakers, M3ti (front), QS2 (rear), VP100 (center) and EP175 (sub). They sounded good with my old amp, but they truely come alive with the RX-V3000. There are enough inputs to satisfy anyone. Although not a big fan of DSP modes, this unit has 49.

I am extremely pleased with this unit, it does what I want and at a price I didn't need to mortage my house over.

One final note: If you decide to purchase this (or any other Yamaha), be sure you buy from an authorized dealer. I know there are some very attractive prices on the net, but if your units dies and you bought from unauthorized dealer and it needs reapir, you're stuck with the cost.

Strength:

Build quality, HT - performance

Weakness:

not a real weakness, but performance with music could be better

Overall, the R-XV is a good product, especially when your main focus is on Home Theater. With music material it is good - you are never really thinking something is wrong - but for somebody with a focus on music, the Yamaha would not be my first choice.

In addition, I am not a great DSP-mode fan. The only modes I used consistently (after a lot of playing around) are the 70mm spectacle and Digital and DTS enhanced modes. At the end, I prefer listening to music material as it was intended by the producers and artists.

For some more detail, check also my review on the B&K AVR 305.

Strength:

Excellent sound and seperation. I like the rear center channel for EX and ES programs. 100x6 and 25 x2 for the front effect speakers

Weakness:

Confusing to set up front speakers. The back panel is marked Front Speakers and Main Speakers. I found out the Front Speakers are the effect speakers. It took a while to figure this. While the remote is better than the older units, I dont like the batteries on the front of the remote. It makes heavy to hold. If the batteries were in the back, it would be balanced better.

So far I am very impressed with this unit. Compared to the Yamaha 995, it has better seperation and sounds great on FM. I love the 8 speaker set up but its hard to find the room to put all the speakers! Execllent unit so far and it sounds great on EX and ES dvs. The center channel really gives it depth. Try Gladiator or Castaway, they are great

clear, detail, build quality, remote control,

Weakness:

power, without dts descrete.

At first, I buy a Sony 555ES to replace my 995,
but I found its noise is to large that I can't put up with it (especially from rear surround speakrs.)

After 5 days, I take my money back and buy a YAMAHA AX2.
I must say the sound is much clear than 555ES, and it has many new functions (compare with 995). It's operation speed is very fast that I can found the sound changes at the same time when I press the remote control. The detail is also better than 555ES or 995. When I listen to CD, I'm suprised by the D/A of AX2, it is really a good machine.

Strength:

Clean Sound for HT and music, sound seperation in DTS & DD. Can make bad speakers sound good. Built solid! Inputs.

Weakness:

DSP Modes too confusing and too many echo badly, difficult to set up speakers, only one rear center speaker, remote layout.

Likes:
Sounds great! Actually I prefer the sound of this unit over the Denon 4800 and I'm a big Denon fan. Sound seperation with movies and music is great. All those wonderful inputs. 8-channel stereo, yea it's gimmiky, but people love it.

Me No Like:
Setup is difficult compared to the Denon. Speaker distance and bass crossover setup should be a bit easier to do. I still can't figure out how to adjust the speaker distance for the front center channel. Only one output for a rear center speaker. Why not two for future upgrades? Can't see the remote in the dark, buttons rather small. I was in DSP mode hell the first couple days. Almost could not figure out how to play movies without using a DSP mode. Do people actually use those things????

All in all this is a good receiver. I paid too much for it, but it's my first Yamaha and I did not want to get burt buying off the net. I just need a good set of spekers to accompany it. Any suggestions?????

Set-up

I upgraded my Yamaha 890 Pro Logic. Unbelievable difference in sound. I am using B & W speakers for Fronts and Rears and a klipsch Center and Sub.

I have not upgraded to a rear center speaker and sub yet, but I can't wait. Another way to spend more money.

Got the receiver from best4digital.com (Comptronix INC.).

They did an excellent job. This receiver at Hi-Fi Buys is selling at $1999 and I paid $1366 + Shipping and insurance it came to $1466.

I hear things I have never heard from my Toshiba 2200 DVD

This unit is great at this price.

Strength:

Very Flexible setup and features, digital input/output assignable, component switching, usable remote, clarity, power, build quality

Weakness:

None so far, possibly the input buttons on the remote could be backlit.

I have only owned this unit for less than two weeks but so far based on price/perfomance it is a bargain. I have only used it with a 5.1 DD speaker setup, over the next few months I will try it with the full 8.1 setup using both Dolby digital and DTS.

I compared it to the Onkyo 787, Denon 3801, Marantz SR18 and Sony 777es. At the end of the day the Yamaha RX-V3000 had the combination of features, performance that I was after.

I use the receiver for about 50% music, 50% Movies. Once I have used it for several months and tried all the features I might provide a more detailed review. Nice upgrade to the RX-V2095 which it replaces
