Strength:

Dolby Digital and DTS, beautiful sound, many inputs

Weakness:

remote is odd

I bought these at A&B Sound in Winnipeg for $649 CDN. I was unsure whether to buy this receiver or Onkyo 474. Both, in my mind and according to the reviews on this site, were the best for the price range.

I am totally amazed and the sound which is reproduced. I had watched The Matrix many times, but was blown away the first time I heard it in (optical) Dolby Digital. WOW!

The Cinema DSP sound fields are superb, but only for the really high-action flicks, I think. They also make a big difference to CDs in Pro-Logic.

The remote takes some getting used to.

70W X 5 is plenty of power for my town house. I can fill the place at the 9.00 position.
Yamaha has done a great job with product. Even the buttons and knobs feel high quality.

A great entry level DD/DTS receiver.

Strength:

Great Features, excellent sound, good remote, Yamaha quality and can't tuoch it for the price. Its on sale at the WIZ right now for $279.99.

Weakness:

No visible volume indicator in the dark.

After setting up a Kenwood VR407 two weeks ago and realizing its weaknesses, I exchanged it for the Yamaha. In hindsight, it was a great decision. The RXV496 has every feature you need and plenty of inputs. Easy to set up with the manual. Clean power... the sound quality is perfect when mated to my Polk Audio 6600 speakers. Cannot give it enough praise!!! If you wnat something pretty, buy something else. If you want sound, features, quality and value, then there is no other choice.

Strength:

Very powerfull. Natural and clean sound. Really wonderfull DSP modes.

Weakness:

None. Maybe a better remote control. Volume indication. You need to put the remote codes manually.

I compared this receiver with a pioneer elite and a Pioneer D509S. For this price, Yamanha is perfectly adequated. You don´t need to pay more money with you aren´t interessed in THX and other improvements. COmparede with pioneer, yamaha 406 has a more realistic power and better DSP modes.

I'd recommend this receiver to anyone looking for a solid piece of equipment at a reasonable price.

Strength:

DTS,Dolby Digital,Yamaha DSP, 5.1 Input, Digital Input, S Video Input/Output

Weakness:

No LED on Volume nob (Can't see the volume level in the Dark)

Sold the pioneer HT amp and changed to Yamaha – What a change, it produce clear and clean sound specially at moderate volume level ( Sorry I couldn’t try at least ½ Volume mark yet as I don’t like to disturb my neighbors, It’s RMS is so real –they are really Powerful watts. I extremely satisfied with this product and sad to see it has dropped It’s rating at Audio Review

It shakes my small living room when I reach 1/3 volume mark. Thanks to Yamaha – But little annoyed to see some people have bought this amp less prices than what I did – This amp priced at 200 BD ( 533 US$ ) and sold for a special sale price – Well I don’t know what is the meaning of “SALE” here.

Strength:

great clear sound, lots of power, super-price, DTS , 6 CH input for future decoder , and it looks good too !

Weakness:

remote - comes with built in codes, and not a learning capability

I have purchased this reciever after doing a lot of market research. I have listened to much more expensive stuff (yamaha rx-v2095 for example), and decided that there is no competition in value/price ratio to the rx-v496.
It has all the features you need - AC3, DTS , very good DSP (especially for movies, for music I preffer no dsp at all).
The best thing is, that unlike many other home theater recievers, this one also sound great with music !
for this price - no competition !
(used with wharfedale modus 4 front speakers)
very recommended, excellent value, great buy

Strength:

Excellent surround performance, Affordable, Yamaha's DSP programme still the best

Weakness:

No preouts for FL/C/FR/SR/SL, Limited S-Video input, Centre and Surrounds speaker terminal not binding posts

I decided to buy the unit after 1 hour of listening, switching it between Denon AVR-1601 and Sony STR-DE545. The unit won with flying colours and here's why :
1. All analog and digital surround performance sounded excellent. This is without turning any DSP enhancement modes on and all channel levels set to "flat" position.
2. All analog and PCM digital stereo modes sounded better than those two. I tested playback with tape decks, CDs, MDs, CD-RWs and tune to favourite radio stations. This unit sounded, well, musically.
3. Yamaha's DSP modes. Load the DTS-encoded Men In Black DVD, hit the DTS Sci-Fi mode, proceed to the flying-glowing ball chapter and I swear to you folks that I AM THERE. In other words, THERE IS NO OTHER BRAND CAN COMPETE WITH YAMAHA'S DSP MODES.
4. Affordable! This is an affordable receiver with excellent PCM Stereo, Dolby Pro.Logic, Dolby Digital and DTS performance; why pay more?
