Great sound in DTS and Dolby Digital. Very nice sounding sub output.
Weakness:
Horribly sound quality in stereo, or in Pro Logic in phantom. Ok center channel sound. Well found a great deal on this Yamaha unit, it was half price and it sounded very good when I played movies on it. The subwoofer sounds tight and very strong. The bad part about this particular unit is that it sounds horribly when you are playing music. It sounds very high pitched, and the sub shows like a sore thumb. Also for a high current amplifier, it can't handle a 4 ohm load that well. I have a set a Magnepan MMGs and it can't drive them, that well. The Magnepan's sound like a tweeter and a tweeter only, there is far to much high end sound and not enough low end comming from these speakers when playing music. I would only adise people to buy this unit, if they intend to use it mainly for movies, if you are a music lover like myself, look somewhere else. Similar Products Used: Yamaha RX-V1050 |

Powerful. Dynamite for movies. Good build quality. Very quiet, runs cool.
Weakness:
Stereo is bright. FM stereo is very, very bright. Weak tone controls. If all you do is movies then this is the one. The RX-V596 was designed to rock in home theater and that's what it does best. But for me home theater is maybe 10% of my listening. The other 90% is CDs and FM. In FM stereo this thing made my speakers sound like a bunch of squawk boxes. (squawk. noun 1. A loud irritating screech.) So if you need more than just movies then get them to hook up an FM antenna before you buy so you can listen for yourself. We tried 2 other units in the store and they had the same problem. Exchanged for a Denon AVR-1801 and I'm happy. The Dennon is a much better receiver for music. Similar Products Used: Technics |

Needs more DSP's This Yamaha reciever kills!!!!!!!! It has super clear sound quality, low distortion and doesn't overheat. I have had this unit since january and my only complaint is not many dsp's .It has everything that you need to make your home theatre sound awesome without breaking the wallet!!!! Recommend this product to everyone. Similar Products Used: Kenwood vr-406(piece of junk) |

Very good sound. Dolby & DTS decoders. Good value.
Weakness:
No "5-channel stereo" Ok.... This is a "middle of the road" receiver, but for the money ($400US/$600cdn) it is hard to beat. Contrary to some reviews posted here, I must say that this unit kicks out very clear sound in all frequency ranges. Bass is very solid and the high end is clean and clear. Home theater sounds amazing! I think the key to making this unit sound great is to match it up with an appropriate set of speakers. I have Paradigms all around and these match VERY well with this unit. I have sub woofers but even with the subs turned off bass response is very good. Similar Products Used: HK, Denon, Sony |

Clear Sounding highs and bass
Weakness:
Orange lights, remote This is the best sounding AV receiver for the money. I was impressed the the clear sound quality coming out of my Energy Speakers. I can't imagine anyone who can point out a flaw, other than the poorly designed remote control. This was perfect for listening to U-571, especially when the depth charges were exploding all around me! Some people have complained about this model being too bright, but I think that those people need to turn down the treble. You need to hear those highs. Similar Products Used: None |

Remote is a bit confusing. Hall DSP sounds a bit weird for certain music For the price that I paid, this receiver is excellent for movies and music. This is paired with Energy Take 5 with 8" sub. |
