gutless

I didn't buy this product. But, I have been looking at buying a new receiver for quite some time. I haven't bought one yet for two reasons. 1, being the price of the good stuff, and 2, I haven't heard anything that really impressed me. I listened to this receiver at my local Team Electronics. I WAS NOT IMPRESSED. YAMAHA HAS TO BE KIDDING!!! The salesman referred to this receiver as "gutless". I also listened to the Denon 2801 and the Yamaha rxv-3000 side by side. The $2000 Yamaha was heartless next to the Denon. I just don't get the Yamaha thing. I listen to them and all I hear is dead sound. I think I'll buy a Pioneer. They aren't the best quality product out there. But, you can run them without having to buy a $1000 subwoofer. Somebody has to explain to me why a "gutless" receiver is considered a preferable product.

Strength:

Size and Weight. Clean Sound

Weakness:

Power, Remote Control, Technical Support

Is only good for Surround System, best if used with Yamaha Speakers because of low impedance. Should be used for small room. Do not try to use as Main stereo setup to play loud music. Very week with Floor Speakers. I have heard good things about Yamaha, receivers but power is not one of them. Stick with Sony or Denon, also technical support is poor. I have some Polk RT600i for main and a set of JBl S312 that I have tried and I had to turn the volume way up to get good sound. For surounds I am using Boston Micro90x. I also tried it with a Boston 9000 Speaker set up and it sounded better, but only for Surround not music.

Strength:

THE PRICE. There is not a amp with this many features and inputs in its class. Very happy. No HISS. Easy to set up and program from on screen menu.

Weakness:

Remote could be better.

If you want a better amp you will have to spend 2x to 3x as much.

Good clean highs

Its a great receiver while it worked! After about a month I heard some background noise in all the digital inputs. I checked out my dvd player and it was fine. I took it in and it will take 6 weeks and at least $100. If anyone else has had the same problem pleae let me know how long it took to repait and its cost.

Strength:

options menu is great, compact design-{mid-size}-loaded with features, and its easy to work it.

Weakness:

no pre-outs and sounds a bit muttered at times.

its been the next level of exellency from the moment I took it out the box.the sound revieled purified-crisp results overall.taken into consideration that it doesent cost a whole lot of money{dinero}its the best reciever in the market.Ive never seen anything like it with easy to use options and menus, fast hook-up to your camcorder or video games, and the amount of inputs id have to say to get one for yourself and you'll see too it is amazing.

Sound, Hookups, power, ease of use

Weakness:

None

This is far and away the best of the reciever that I have used. I have been shuffling recievers around for a couple of months and I have finally found one that is going to keep me happy. The sound on this unit is incredibly crisp and clear, and hiss is non-existent. DVD's sound incredible as do cds. The 5 channel stereo is great, but the rest of the DSP's are pretty useless. On screen display makes configuration a breeze. This is a great reciever.

Weakness:

not enough subwoofer level control

i've been using this unit mostly for movies and t.v. i have it matched with a PSB speaker package and i am quite happy with the performance i have been getting. compared to my marantz, it is not as musical but the sound fields perform much better.
i don't like the remote very much so i switched my marantz RC2000 over to the home theater setup and put the yamaha in the drawer for safe keeping to reprogram the universal if needed.
over all i am very pleased with the unit and would highly receommned it to anyone who is looking for a budget priced receiver.

Strength:

Good sound, looks, and effects. 5 Channel Stereo.

Weakness:

Remote control is difficult to opperate.

I originally purchased the HTR5460 which was on sale for 250.00 and the last one in the store. After only having it 2 days the power on the receiver would not come on. I took it back and they gave me the new 499.00 RX-V620 at no extra charge, the receiver I really wanted.
I like the 5 Channel Stereo effect option which did not come on the HTR5460. This receiever sounds great with everything you play, FM stereo, movies, Playstation, and especially music on CD's.
Though the HTR5460 and the RX-V620 are both 100 watts X 5 receivers. The HTR5460 appeared noticeably the most powerful of the two. I like my RX-V620 and when I get a DVD player I'm sure I will like it even more.

Strength:

Yamaha quality. I am brand-loyal. Their stuff sounds great and it's well made.

Weakness:

The controls on the rx-v420, 520, and 620.

I returned this receiver soley b/c of the front-panel controls. I found it incredibly annoying, for example, that to change modes (tuner, CD, DVD, etc), you have to use left-right buttons to page through the various input choices. Certainly much more complicated than simply walking up to the unit and pressing a CD button. Also, Yamaha decided to replace last year's bass, treble, and balance knobs (which were the standard sturdy adjustment knobs), with these tiny little flimsy things that look like they're off of some walkman or alarm clock radio.

Otherwise, it seemed like a fine product that sounds great. I just couldn't get over my issues with the controls, so I exchanged it for last year's model (and saved some $$).

Digital Top Art
Component Video
Clean Power and low distortion
A & B speaker outlets
DTS
On-screen displays
Bass extension
Phone Input

Weakness:

Not a very CLEAR & DISTINCTIVE DIFFENCE BETWEEN the RX-V series and the HTR
I feel the face should be similar to the 800 at this level
I think the Zone 2 or the preout terminals shoul of been offered.( I think it it on some European models)

I got a really good deal for the receiver and the Klipch Quintet series. I am Amazed with the overall quality that the receiver produces and the mass amount of features. I realize that there are some recievers with more and better features, but I don't have an extensive line of A/V components. I reviewed the Harman Kardon 310/510, all the Onkyo products Crutchfield, and Circuit City carries. Of course I checked with BestBuy, being a college student on a fixed income. I primarly only had the use of my summer National Guard drill check. It was odd that I found the the best deal in a Hi-Fi shop, which usually doesn't happen to me. I liked the personal attention for what I actually needed, they remembered my name, and I like the fact that they would send my unit directly to Yamaha for warranty repairs. I have had terrible experiences with BestBuy's repair service and return structure. Not to mention the Hi-FI shop knew everything about there product, although I was impressed with I few sales personnel at Circuit City.
I've heard a few of my friends' Harmon-Kardons and I was impressed by the warm sound and clarity. However, they were in and out of the shop for "various" problems(210/310/510. The Harmon-Kardon didn't have the features in the price range for which I was looking. They didn't have a phono input, even though I am aware of the add-on kit. I would be afraid to put any extra on considering the known problems, especially if your speakers are not 8-ohm.
The Onkyo's I was looking at, I beleive it was the 696, had been known for a center channel hum. For the amount that it costs, this problem shouldn't exist.
Overall, I have become a Yamaha lover and have used their musical instruments and commercial equiptment as well. I love sound fields, I don't think they are "OVERPROCESSED", AND MOST IMPORTANTLY I LIKE TO USE MY AKAI FLOOR SPEAKERS SIMULTANEOUSLY WITH MY SURROUNDS AND SUBWOOFER WITH A VARIABLE IMPEDANCE SELECTOR.
