Strength:
Price & sound quality on DVD
Weakness:
Remote - not too hard to figure out, but you have to keep spinning that dial. It's a real p.i.t.a. Sound quality for CD. Could not get my BA VR500 sub to work with this unit unless I "cheated" it off the mains. Let me first preface this with I love Yamaha products. I own two Yahama acoustic guitars and an rx-v675. Why not buy from the people who make the instruments! When I first upgraded to the 795a, I couldn't get my sub to work. Several reccommendations from the store finally had me connect the sub to the mains. That gave me really muddy bass. The 675's sub was so clean, you'd swear there was a studio musician in your room playing. After "settling" for muddled bass response, It did a good job while watching DVD. Once I popped in a CD my whole opinion changed. I like my music LOUD and in one day I could go from Beethoven to Static X......... Well, sorry to say, this rig couldn't cut it. I spent my refundable month tweaking and tuning trying to get the right sound, no go.. Then a buddy of mine came over who is also a musician. We were listening to it when he asked "What happened to your tunes?" He thought someone had been playing with my 675. That was my final decision helper. I threw it back in the box and traded for a Sony 333 ES, and I am NOT a fan of Sony. I will let you know how it goes. Similar Products Used: Sony 333ES |

Strength:
Sound quality, Binding posts for all channels, Price, Plenty of inputs & outputs.
Weakness:
some of the DSP modes, (church, auditorium). Not really a weakness, I just don't have a use for them. I stepped up to the Yamaha RX-V795a soly for the purpose of setting up for home theater. I must say I'm compleatly satisfied with this receiver. So far I have watched aprox, 10 movies, and have been ammazed at the realisim in the dolby digital sound and seperation that this unit puts out. I auditioned several other receivers before making my decision. dennon, sony, ext. But for the manufactures suggested retail price, and quality, none of the other receivers could compare. I didn't actuelly pay retail price for this unit. I got a great deal from the local audio store for $500. But even at retail, it would be well worth it. Power. DSP's, multifunction remote....this baby has it all
Weakness:
None that can hear or see I feel sorry for all you other people out there who are just kicking your brains out trying to figure out what's missing in your home theatre system. The answer. Yamaha rxv-795a. This baby can pump a room at any degree, this thing as more outputs and inputs than I've ever seen in my life. This receiver can basicaly handle all your home audio/video needs. And with the remote..forget about finding your cd remote, and your tv remote..and your satalite remote....it's all there! And all the DSP....also automatically ajust to the sound technology you listen to (ex: will switch automatically to DTS if the movie is shown in such a format) it's simply incredible. Strength:
Clear and detailed sound, easy to use, runs cool
Weakness:
Small buttons/lettering on the remote, lack of S-video for the cable TV input I listen to music 65% and HT 35%. The detail and clarity of the 795a is amazing. Some of these reviews have called it bright, but I am not sure. Shortly after I received the 795a I attended a Band concert and a Jazz concert in the same hall. By comparison to this experience I found the 795a to sound more natural and "live" like than bright. When pushed it can sound harsh, but my 18 year hold Cizek 1's always sound harsh when played really loud. For sure the flaws in poor recordings are very evident, but good recordings sound incredible. I am tempted to take vacation days to just stay home and listen. Diana Krall and Harry Connick, Jr. sound as though they are live in the room. It would be a poor trade off to roll of the highs and sacrifice the exileration of good recordings to mask the flaws in poor ones. Strength:
Nice crisp sound, good power output, nice surround decoding. I had previsouly owned a RT2300 RCA, and it dims in comparison to this Yamaha.
Weakness:
The remote is somewhat akward to use, I suppose it takes getting used to. Even though I haven't used it for long, I already love what this receiver has to offer. Dolby Digital (I need a DVD player now) plus a few Dolby Cinema presets. About 6 other presets, Hall, Church, Rock, Jazz, and a couple more. Similar Products Used: Pioneer, RCA |

Strength:
Sound and clarity were exceptional; blew me away (see my earlier review). While it lasted.
Weakness:
After 2 months, Dolby/DTS section went dead. Receiver has spent the last 6 of 7 weeks in repair shop. So much for Yamaha's much vaunted quality! Similar Products Used: Technics SA-GX690 - still ticking after all these years! Glad I didn't sell it yet. |

Strength:
Sound, looks, price
Weakness:
Lack of inputs (specifically video) My only complaint about this unit is the lack of video inputs on the back panel. A 'VCR2' or something similar would have been nice for video game consoles, etc. (my setup does not easily allow for front panel use) Also, the first unit I received refused to turn on, and had to be replaced (at no cost to me, of course). |

Strength:
Incredible surround sound reproduction
Weakness:
Remote takes some getting used to-not overly fond of the "spinning wheel" design, and the buttons are way to small to find in the dark This Yamaha 795a is great! I have tried them all; Onkyo, Harman Kardon, Sony ES, Pioneer Elite, and this is by far the best deal out there for under a grand. The amps in this unit are VERY clean. I've cranked this puppy up to 90 percent of max volume, and there is STILL no distortion. I get room shaking surround sound at about 25 percent of the max volume. The receiver does a stellar job with both DTS and Dolby Digital sourround sound. The Tri-Field DSP modes really do enchance the surround sound. I put "Dragonheart" in the DVD player, and went to chapter 12 (where the dragon literally flies around Dennis Quaid), and it was amazing! Talk about a cohesive, three-dimesional surround field! The dragon sounded like he was in my living room, flying around my head! It totally blew away the Onkyo 575 and HK AVR 45 I tried out. Similar Products Used: Onkyo TX-DS 575 |

Strength:
Built to last, connectors on back panel
Weakness:
Remote control and some of the DSP sound modes I bought the 795A to replace a receiver that I had for 20+ years. If the 795A last as long I will be very happy. It looks and feels like a sturdy piece of equipment. |
