Strength:
Good price/performance. Clean sound.
Weakness:
Remote control. This receiver puts out a clean and crisp sound when hooked up to Klipsch speakers all around. The bass is good for the music I listen to, clean and not overwhelming. I would definitely get a subwoofer for home theater use though. Plenty of digital and s-video hookups. The DSP modes aren't great but usable. I would've liked something similar to Denon's 5 channel stereo, but the 795's Disco mode will have to do. Great beginning receiver. Similar Products Used: Denon, Onkyo |

Strength:
It has all the essentials for great home theater.
Weakness:
Remote control could be better, but it's still not that bad. This is a great receiver all around. You can't beat it dollar for dollar. More than adequate power for most people and crisp clean sound at extreme volumes. A receiver that can stand shoulder to shoulder with some true high-end products at a consumer friendly price-point. |

Strength:
lots of punch; very clean sounding; compact size
Weakness:
DSP's all sound too "echo-y," though I still have to play around some more with them. Display, even on brightest setting, can be hard to see from across the room. Great value in a DD/DTS receiver. It powers my B&W DM604s much better than my old Onkyo pro-logic receiver did. They sound clearer, punchier, etc. Remote not as bad as a lot of reviewers here have said. The wheel isn't the best design, but I easily programmed in my TV, VCR and CD player, all from different manufacturers, and it controls most of their functions. This has to have the strongest 85 watts of power of any receiver I've heard. I did a side by side comparison between this Yamaha and the new Onkyo 676, and the Onkyo sounded anemic in comparison. If I turn the volume up much more than a quarter of the way, it gets almost unbearably loud, but still retains complete clarity. A reviewer below said that the tuner display doesn't stay on when the tuner is on. This is incorrect; I noticed that the RV-1105 (basically the same receiver sold at large retailers such as Best Buy)has that weird feature, but this one doesn't. All in all, for around $600, it would be hard to find a better receiver. Similar Products Used: Onkyo, Marantz |

I recently purchased the 795a after looking at several other receivers. I felt that for the money it was the best I could do. After setting it up I was amazed at the sound that came out of my old JBL's. Before getting the 795a I thought the speakers were just getting old. Afterwards they sounded great. I'm very happy with the receiver, it was easy to set up and operate. I wish the manual was a little more extensive and the remote is goofy but useable with the wheel you have to turn to switch between components. Overall, however, what counts is the receiver and I couldn't be more happy with it, the sound is A+. Even my wife ,who is not easily impressed, thought it sounded great. |

Weakness:
none. This is a very good reciever that you will enjoy for many years with both music and movies!!I use this receiver with a pair of jamo classic 10 speakers and the sound is very good!!!The receiver is rated at 5*85 watts in 8 ohm,but it seems like it`s a lot more powerful than that!!! Strength:
Powerful, has excellent DSP modes, has optical inputs, you can bi-wire speakers, makes your friends jelous, and looks nice =)
Weakness:
remote takes time to get used to I've broken in my RX-V795a and it works like it did new. One of thde biggest bangs for the buck you can buy. I use Polk Audio RT-55i's (bi-wired) and I am totally satisfied with amount of power this receiver can put out. Similar Products Used: another Yamaha (i forgot the model #) |

Strength:
DSP sound fields, POWERFUL
Weakness:
remote control is really bad I have used a lot of A/V receivers, and I must say that this is an excellent unit, at least for the price I paid. The DSP sound fields are wonderful and are very dynamic. Ther are plenty of them to choose from to, whether you're listening to music, or watching a movie. This thing is powerful enough to drive whatever you have. If it's not, then there's something wrong with your stuff. I absolutely hate the remote control. I even went and got the "next step up" remote from yamaha and it didn't help at all. I recommend buying a Marantz or other multi remote with this unit. The sound is clear and beautiful, this is the only way I can put it. Highly recommended if you can find one for 400 US or less. One more bad thing -> there isn't a displayed level of volume. I mean that when you raise the volume the display says "volume up" whereas I prefer a number to use as a reference point. Strength:
Stereo separation
Weakness:
It cuts out in digital movie mode!!! When I first played Saving Private Ryan (DTS) on this thing it would cut out (turn off) if I had the volume at 1/2 or greater. That was pretty loud, and I figured I would not typically have it that loud - so I didn't do anything about it. Similar Products Used: Sony, HK, Onk |

Value per dollar
Weakness:
none noticed....well, the remote does take some getting used to This is an incredible A/V receiver for what it costs. I run Boston VRM60's, Boston VRi585 surrounds, and a HSU VTF2 sub with it. The sound is awesome. I haven't listened to any real high end systems but my system sounds way better than my friends that are Denon fanatics (then again it may be their speakers - JBL and Paradigm). The Yamaha sounds very tight. Vocals are very life like and bass is clear. I'm not a big DSP fan. The only time I use it is when I set it to "Sports" when I'm watching football. Makes you feel like you are sitting in the crowd. Contrary to the assertions made in the previous posting this receiver will crank. It will play so loudly that I sometimes worry about disturbing the neighbors that are 75' away. I suspect his problem is likely that he has the impedance selector set incorrectly. I've had this receiver for nearly a year now with 100% satisfaction. It's doubtful that I will ever buy anything other than Yamaha again. If you are comparison shopping ya gotta check this one out. You won't be disappointed. |
