Brought this receiver 2.5 months ago. I was planning to get the RXV 2090, butthe place sold out of it. I didn't like the newer Yamaha's because it's very
difficult to upgrade to DTS. But, the RXV 990 and 2090 can be upgraded with ease! The 990 and 2090 are basically the same. 2090 has more power to the rear and 2 additional channels. The front panel is a bit different too.

When I brought this receiver, I hooked it up to a Carver 200 watts THX amp
for the fronts. Then I moved the front amps of the Yamaha (100 watts) and moved
it to the rears.Using preouts from the rears, and main in's for the fronts.
I have two subs, a PSB Subsonic 2i and the Yamaha YST 80. This receiver sounds awesome. It sounds very musical when used with a outboard DAC. I hooked up a DDP-2 AC-3 processor to it a week later, The Rxv and DDP2 gave me the most
wholesome feeling ever in a movie! A AWESOME RECEIVER! I'm planning to upgrade
to DTS in the near future, and adding a ADCOM 5503 three channel amp also.

I purchased my 990 and a DDP-1 new about 8 months ago and I love it!It replaces a 150 watt * 2 Carver receiver and I was very surprised when I got it home.
It sounded better than my Carver (IMHO). The 990 deals with the 6 Ohm speaker load of my Infinity speakers better than the Carver and doesn't clip until a much higher volume. It has less noise, and surprisingly enough, sounds better with classical music. I'm sure some of this does have to do with the speakers and the 6 Ohm load though. Very natural sounding, not too warm or harsh.

As for dsp modes, I use 70mm for movies, standard dolby surround for certain movies that sound bad on the 70mm setting, sports for sports, and Jazz Club for music. I've found the other settings are usefull for certain songs, but with the wrong music they can make your skin crawl. I've experienced no "leakage" on my 990 when dsp modes are disabled.

I bought my 990 two days after my local dealer got it. Ever since I love it. I have it pinned to a set of Bose 401 which need to be moved to the rear channel and I'm moving a set of DefTech 20's to the front. It puts out all the power those Bose hogs eat, and more. I tried a couple of Denon receivers but they didn't have what I was looking for in sound. It's so so so clean and there's enough there for anything, it sounds great with AC-3 out of a Sony DCp600 5-disc DVD player. It also plays well with my Eosone center channel the RSC 300. I'm going to enjoy this reciever for a lifetime.

One of the main reasons why i bought this receiver is because ofit's upgradability. Furthermore, the sound quality was above average
for a receiver of that price. I would recommend it over any other
manufacturer listing at the same price.

Tested with Energy C2 speakers & NHT 10" Active Sub.

I was hesitant about buying this receiver because of some ofthe comments listed at this web site (the other reviews).
Firstly I am very satisfied with the 990. It is everything
one would ever want in a receiver for $1250 cdn ($900US).
I'm not into features (but it has plenty!), but am primarily
interested in sound quality.
One person wrote "not musical, for home theater only". I
disagree, and comment for use as a stereo it has excellent
clarity, huge clean power and excellent low end. I challenge
someone to recommend a 'receiver' that sounds better for
audio for the price. I heard nothing even close (tried
Denon, Mirantz, SonyES).
Also another person commented that with DSP modes off there
was leakage. A true audio buff would definitely use NO dsp
when listening to a CD, and there is absolutely NO leakage
with my 990. Just pure L&R. Must have been a defect model.
As a home theater unit, the prologic is the best mode (I
find least distracting from the movie) and the 70MM mode is
cool (but can be distracting) All other DSP modes I find
useless, but that is to taste.
All in all, I highly recommend this unit to anyone. It has
all the quality one comes to expect from Yamaha.

I started with Yamaha RX590 with DM602 B&W speakers.I was happy until about a week later. I really got into listening to the sounds. I kinda thought it too sound muddy. I new it wasn't the speakers. I tested them agiansts energy c-6's. It wasn't long before I purchased the B&W's.

I new the sound could be beter.I upgraded to the Yamaha RX-690.I wasn't to impressed with that so I upgraded agian to Yamaha RX-990. Know I am happy.
It was like night and day.

The souround sound was also Improved immensely.
I was told that Yamaha has the best souround sound. I never looked at any other receivers. maybe I should have? But for know I am happy.
ENERGY ES-12 SUBWOOFER ROCKS MY HOUSE!!!!

I'm in to Home Theater....I own this receiver and I Think it is the best value!!! This Yamaha
RX-V990 (for that price range), I love the DSP processor!! With my NHT
SuperOnes and NHT SuperZeros as Surround channel... prove to a ultimate
speaker for my tight budget! Moreover this receiver is AC-3 ready...
with Yamaha DDP-1 I'm able to enjoy AC-3!

If you wish to listen to a receiver with the best DSP... go for Yamaha!
Ps. Denon uses Yamaha DSP chip!!!! Just for your info!
