Strength:

Best overall value for money at it's price pt, most features at price pt,best remote-it learns+not just rows of buttons but diff. sizes and shapes,2nd room capable, preamp out for second amp option, articulates acoustic and sparse arrangements with crisp detail up to moderately loud volume levels, dead quiet at cadences, dramatic and dynamic when the music kicks back in, cool looks, ~50% discounts on shelf modes after 1yr as well as left over units, bass management I found to be easy after reading and experimenting, no fan, ran cool with sub in use, TWO sub outs!

Weakness:

Overly bright on some music and sound tracks, only 2 digital inputs can be used at once, remote is large + a touch cumbersome, can rip your ears out with needle-like [treble] sensation at high volume, gets harsh in the top end in other words, manual not clear, obviously not proof read

Yes, this solid state baby sounds bright at high volumes and frankly can hurt you at the 10:30 position and up, buuuuuuut loads of power there especially when sub takes bass load off of amp, AND this baby articulates detail even at low volume levels, acoustic guitar is IN your room, scary realism in its some of its reproduction capabilities and spot on DSP manuevers which turn your head 'cause you thought it was YOUR phone, penny rolling on the floor, roommate closing the door, someones at your front door?-pause the dvd effect, dts not missed, I feel I'm set for a while in terms of it's ability to reproduce satellite and DVD audio. Hoooooooowever, I am, especially after confirming my bad ear feelings at loud-esque levels, getting either a tube amp or a nice high-end 2 channel amp to power music. Just can't crank it like I'd like to in my room although I am going to first try tame this beast's bright top-end with some room treatments like buying or making some treble sucking sound panels. Speakers; Tried Polk Monitor 10's, Cerwin Vegas, some JBLS, Radio Shack Lineaum's, Technics, Sonys, and finally settled on Ohm Walsh 3XO's with the Lineaums as rear channelers {pointed towards the rear upper wall corners for ever more diffusion of the surround channel]. Still too bright though, but I'm an obsessed, Stereophile, Absolute Sound, the Sensible Sound, Stereophile for Home Theater, reading kind of guy so...MANY of you may not have this same reaction and need or observation of shortfall. Or your room may be far more dampened or your speakers may be a lot more forgiving. Speakers with a warmer top-end might sound fine especially in a heavily carpetted and furnished room. I'm gonna try a tube amp for the front channel using the pre-amp out puts for the front channel anyway. Ive never had a tube amp and they are quite the talk of the town in the audio world now. Still, Ani DiFranco's "Out Of Range" album and Greg Brown's "The Poet Game" album are beeeautiful through this baby, as well as Cassandra Wilson's "Travelling Miles". Gonna go enjoy those discs now!!!!

Strength:

Solid AC-3 perfomance, excellant in home theater application, outstanding stereo CD sound

Weakness:

Remote is to complicated. Must keep a list of settings with you at all times.

This unit is replacing my NAD separates. I was really pleased with NAD but I needed more jack options. My salesman at Tweeter ETC; Told me about AC-3 and surround sound.Looked over several units and decided the Yamaha had more than enough to fill my needs. CD's are remarkable. Movies are so realistic I find myself looking around all the time. I've matched this unit up with a full set of Klipsch speakers (synergy series), including sub-woofer. I'm in a small room and can't crank it up more than 10 o'clock. it blows you out of the room. Really would of liked it to have dts. A friend bought the 995. Can't recommend the 992 enough.

Strength:

Various selection for effects, particularly for movie/cinema option.

Weakness:

It easily heats up. It maybe needs some sort of cooling system.

I'm using the 995 model for a week when it suddenly stop, sparks and smoke came out from the unit. This happens when the volume knob level reaches between 10 and 11 o'clock.

Strength:

Sound Quality, Surround Features

Weakness:

No DTS

This is an excellent receiver with very good sound for both CD's and DVD. At 80W x 5 it's quite powerful and the surround sound is excellent. Only downfall is no DTS. I may be upgrading to the V2095 for the DTS and 7-Channel setup.
I highly recommend this receiver. Also, I,ve had no problems with the remote.

Strength:

AC-3 performance excellent.

Weakness:

Treble a little bright, bass a little
weak in stereo mode

The 992 represents fantastic value as far as AC-3 receivers go. It has a powerful amplifier section, and outstanding Dolby Digital and Pro-Logic processing. Stereo mode is not as strong as highs are a little too bright and edgy and bass, although tight, a little weak.

Well I've had the 992 for about 6 months now, so I think I can give a pretty honest evaluation on it now. I am very happy with it. Granted, I made its job easy by going with Paradigm speakers.
What I really like about it is its unbelievable clarity and lack of background noise. I can turn this receiver up to incredible volumes at the quiet parts of movies or music and there is absolutely no hiss. There used to be some harshness which I attributed to the reputed "brightness" of Yamaha and Paradigm. Got some decent (not expensive) cable from Kimber and now it's smooth as silk. If what I'm getting now is a "bright" sound, then that's exactly what I want to hear.

I'm also impressed by the fact that it can run so cooly without a fan. I can leave it on all day and it just gets warm. My old Pioneer, which had far less power, would get much hotter much more quickly.

The only thing I don't like about this unit is the way the controls, especially on the remote, are layed out. The controls are cluttered and not very intuitive. The remote is extremely powerful, but is too big with too many buttons to be very useful. IMO, a good remote can be used in the dark effortlessly. I've never seen a worse layout for operating the tuner.

I would give it 5 stars, except for the problems with the controls/remote.

I'll admit that I've been a Yamaha fan for a while now, but MAN! For the money I can't imagine a better reciever. I was lucky enough to find one for $640 shipped to me, but it's a steal at $800.
The high points are the AWESOME Dolby Digital performance and the various DSP modes. I've found that it is ideal in its price range for Home Theater applications, reproducing movie soundtracks accurately. The remote is great once you get used to it, and the setup/display are top notch. There are 5 way binding posts all around, and pre-outs for all channels. Also, it plays clean even at loud volumes. Some people on here have complained that this amp doesn't deliver enough power, well I couldn't disagree more! I'm not sure if they're using really unsensitive speakers or what, but they power my floor standing 3-ways to deafening sound pressure levels.

This is definately a receiver to check out if you're looking for Dolby Digital in the $700-800 range. Best with "warm", efficient speakers.

As for the guy who only gave them one star of five, he's completely wrong about not finding anything better then on a similar Sony. The sound quality on ANY material is better then a Sony in the same price range. Denon is a great competitor, but for the money this is a better receiver/amp.

I Tested this piece of equipment at Gramophone LTD. This receiver had very good DSP Settings and everything was nice (although i prefer the Zoran DSP Chips more they sound ALOT more realistic with no Leaking). The Amplifier gave out too little power. First of at home i have a Yamaha RX-V793 with a Harman/Kardon PA-2.0
Telling the man who said "There is not much of a difference between the RX-V793 and the RX-V992" there is a one MAJOR differnce between the 793 and the 992. There is More S-Video Switching, Binding Posts for ALL Channels, Higher S/N Ratio, more Inputs, Gold-Plated Terminals, a higher Dynamic Headroom, and of course ,does anyone here know what a Damping Factor is? it means how fast a Amplifier can stop a certain signal to make the Speaker Driver stop faster. Most Amplifiers in this price-range can not have too good of a Damping Factor (around 40-60). Yamaha came out with something called Linear Damping Factor Circuitry. This stops the cone from 2-5 times faster. The 793 has a DF of 80 and the 992 has a DF of 200 that is better highs and more grabbing bass. The RX-V793 has a DF of 80 which is well above normal receivers in its class. For all those people saying "On the Yamaha site it says it has 200" that is a Typo. If you E-Mail them they will reply with "It has a DF of <80" if you still don't believe me than request a Catalog (Full-Line) or look in the Owners Manual.

Strength:

dolby digital, second room output, DSP

Weakness:

no DTS, reliability

I have this receiver for a little over two years now.. it's been working great up to this point. all of a sudden, my receiver started powers off randomly.. don't know if it's due to overheating or bad wiring.. if anyone have experience this problem and know of a solution, a feedback is appreciated..

other then this problem i'm experiencing, i like this receiver.. having DTS would be better, but the dolby digital works well with this unit..

hope the random off is not a major problem otherwise i might be force to go with another brand..
