Mine overheats with the volume not even close to halfway. The fan never even turns on. Yamaha says there is nothing wrong with the fan. An authorized repair shop (Meltons) says there is nothing wrong with my Amp. HiFi Buys won't take it back on a trade-in.
I am running 2 Klipsch KLF20 fronts, Klipsch center and infinity rears. I have had it cut off during CD play, DVD play (effect on and off).

I replaced an old Pioneer pro-logic receiver with this, and the difference is amazing. My Pioneer suffered from poor sound at low volume -- There wasn't enough granularity at low volumes (it was always either too quiet or too loud, and there was no setting in between), and it didn't put out any signal to the subwoofer.
Now the Yamaha is driving my home theater, and the Pioneer has been demoted to the bedroom. I've got it set up so that the multiroom signal gets sent to the Pioneer, so that I can listen to music, watch TV, VCR, etc in the bedroom. Multiroom is a very nice feature, other brands of receivers don't seem to have it in the same price range.

Overall Excellent product. It currently costs about what the RXV-795 costs and although it doesn't have DTS the beauty is that this unit has an all S-Video switching system for your LD, DVD, Sattelite, etc. Sound quality from AC-3 on movies is phenomenal, the unit has a very good processor. Excellent value for home theater.

Way too bright! Had borrowed the unit for a weekend to listen. Turned the volume almost halfway. I had to turn it back down because it actually started to hurt(Like needles piercing your ears). I'll stick with my Nakamichi AV-10. A much superior receiver. Give it a try!

I recently decided that it was time to put together a home theater system, and I bought a JCV 884 receiver... bad move. After fighting with it for some time
it was returned and traded in for a Yamaha 992. It was a couple hundred more,
but well worth it. It is really difficult to compare the two receivers, since
the JVC is simply a complete piece of crap compared to the Yamaha. Even though
the power ratings are lower than the JVC, the Yamaha produced enough volume to
rattle the windows with the volume control at about 10 o'clock. To get the same
volume from the JVC required a volume setting of 75-80 (out of 90). The JVC
was incredibly noisy in Dolby mode, lots of hissing and odd noises. The Yamaha
is completely quiet, even at high volume settings. When the JVC was running at
a fairly high volume, the smell of resistors was in the air. Not so the Yamaha.
The remote control for the JVC was cumbersome and questionable. The Yamaha
remote is large and complex, but fairly intuitive and easy to learn. If I had
to come up with any negative about the Yamaha, it would be only that there is
no optical input for the CD player. If you own a JVC 884, please get rid of it,
take it to a swap meet, or stack it in the attic, and go get a real receiver,
the Yamaha 992. You will be glad you did.

Strength:

Great amp with lots of features. Powerfull and clean, excellent DSP features. Better than the Sony ES AV amps.
Easy to use.

Weakness:

Needs more digital optical inputs.
Remote is extremely difficult to program and use.

Clean, powerfull amp with lots of features. Great for movies. An AV receiver that is better for movies than music but nothing to balk at.

Strength:

Crisp, clean, ample power. Perfect AC-3 capability

Weakness:

Too few digital input

I used to work for a retailer that sold Yamaha receivers side-by-side with Sony, Pioneer and Kenwoods... There was no comparison. When the 992 came out, I was wrestling with purchasing the 990... At that time (1994-95) DVD was still in the experimental phases, and it was unsure whether AC-3 would really take off. As a retailer, I had a chance to buy the 992 for half the MSRP, and I took it. I have never regretted that decision. At that time, all I had for speakers were a pair of 8-year-old Bang & Olefson bookshelves - they sounded great. I have since upgraded to an all Polk-Audio speaker system (RT-16's in the front, CS400 center, RT/fx in the rear) and this unit powers them beautifully. After 5 years of daily use, it still operates as well as the day I got it... and I anticipate many more years of fantastic use.

Airy highs (I don't know what this "brightness" is everyone is complaining about) powerful bass. I have every connection filled - I have a DVD player hooked up to the optical input and a LD player set up to the coax (Would have liked one more digital input, but considering the state of the market when this guy was built). Digital Cable, 2 S-VHS VCR's and a tape deck. My roommates love it and we don't even turn on the TV without it. It was a bargain then and I would buy it all over again.

The only crisper AC-3 output I ever heard was on a DSPA-3090 with DDP-1 attached - MSRP - $3000. Needless to say, I have never complained. Would recommend to ANYONE who loves music, movies, or just sound in general.

Strength:

Music Audio and Dolby Digital audio. Power.

Weakness:

No DTS is the only weakness!

First, read my reveiw for the Yamaha RXV-995, which I compaired this unit against.
The RXV-992 is a wonderful unit. The sound quality, both music and dolby digital is great. I wanted DTS, so I upgraded to the RXV-995. What I got was a major disappointment from the RXV-995. The two units were compaired with the same speakers in the same position in the same room. The music of the RXV-992 was so much more dynamic, warmer and fuller. It created a nice image. The RXV-995's music sounded like it came out of a radio shack transister radio!! Sounded hollow, shallow and had distorted bass. Don't let the sales man lie to you. The RXV-995 is not the same unit with DTS as the RXV-992. The RXV-992 blew the doors off of the peice of junk 995. I would keep the RXV-992 if it had DTS. I really would!

Strength:

Flexible hookup options. Powerful performance. Great Pro Logic, Dolby Digital.

Weakness:

Not enough digital inputs.

The 992 sounds very good on both stereo music and five channel movies. I have seven speakers hooked up and it drives them all very well. Excellent performance on everything from games to dvd to cd's. No DTS but who cares? On screen menus are nice. The remote is also very good but takes some getting used to. Second room out is also handy.
