Strength:

Very clear.

Weakness:

Sometimes shrill and edgy in the top range; and a little missing in the lower midrange.

When I first got the 7R it was a revelation how bright and clear it was. As time progressed it just became a bit of a strain to listen somtimes. The clarity still came through, but ....

Similar Products Used:

Arcam alpha8R (I replaced the 7R with the 8R after 6 weeks). Also compared with a NAD C340. The NAD wasn't as shrill as the 7R, but lacked the clarity: maybe good for easy listening. The Alpha 8R was much the best.

Strength:

Detailed sound but not harsh. Can be considered safe sounding. Good looks. Good facility.

Weakness:

Modest power output.

I found the Arcam Alpha 7R better sounding than the similarly priced Marantz and NAD amplifiers. Requires good matching with speakers. Good price too.

Strength:

Great performance for the money.
Good starter for a newcomer to Hi-Fi.
It sounds clear and soft.

Weakness:

This is intended for listeners that love listening to soft music and classic. It can play good Hard rock but you won't have the punch you would expect.

Good product. Great look. No extra gadget.
Arcam has good products to go with.

Strength:

good image,dynamic,soft highs but clear.

Weakness:

no light on the volume knob.

well first I was knocked on my butt when I heard the
power this 45 watt put out.I heard it on a pair of boston's
and compared it to marantz and nad c370.the power was just
as good but the music sounded just better.the female voice
where clear but not harch. It cost me 100.00 less than the
Nad. I'm playing this amp on a pair of boston's vr975
powered sub speakers and it's all the power I need.
Even if I liked to crank it up sometimes. My only pev is
they should have put a small light in the volume knob,
because in my wall unit I can not see how loud the volume
is.My next step is to upgrade my cd from a Yamaha to a
ARCAM 7 cd.

Strength:

Good Value, Preamp-out feature, includes phono stage

Weakness:

Not so powerful, not a convincing soundstage

The Arcam 7amp is a good place to start if you are climbing up the high-end audio ladder. However, as I added the bryston poweramp, and later the preamp, layers of detail were revealed, and a wide, deep soundstage manifested itself. The Arcam was simply blown away by serious gear like the Bryston - totally different class.

Also, consider that the retail price on the Arcam in the US is far more than in it's home territory of Britain, where I believe it retails for abotu 300pounds. Hence, one may get better value out of some US sourced gear.

I think the Arcam is good value, but upgrade as soon as you can. Other products to consider may be YBA Integre or Musical Fidelity gear.
