Strength:
The audible spectrum is balanced. At first you might think the treble is rolled off, but that's incorrect, because when the treble is there in the recording it is reproduced with correct timbre and is beautifully smooth. The amplifier is exceedingly quiet. New Construction Roofing Weakness:
I have no complains Purchased: New

Comments are in the context of my specific system, which incorporates a very high quality custom tube preamp, electrostatic loudspeakers and a pair of 90+ dB efficient speakers with 15 inch bass units and horn-loaded midrange/treble. I recently re-tubed my SE-1 and re-biased the tubes. While doing this I took some time to take a close look at the construction of the amplifier and discussed the schematic with an experienced amp builder not far from me. In my system the SE-1 is amazing. Contrary to popular notions, the bass coming out of my conventional speaker is deep, nuanced and well controlled. It also sounds great through my Quad ESL 2805s. I now truly understand the benefits of a single-ended, direct-heated-triode design. The audible spectrum is balanced. At first you might think the treble is rolled off, but that's incorrect, because when the treble is there in the recording it is reproduced with correct timbre and is beautifully smooth. What is missing is the subtle grittiness of poorer amplification. The amplifier is exceedingly quiet. I get NO tube rush or hum coming through my speakers. Music flows with wonderful nuance, allowing insight into the artistic interpretation of the musicians and ensemble interplay. Although I still consider myself a novice, this humble, well-built amplifier has taught me a great deal and is extremely enjoyable. With the Chinese now selling 300b amplifiers at amazing prices I wonder what this amp would sell for now, with the high quality of it's bill of materials. Considering that it is, what, 20+ years old, what would a kit like this sell for nowadays? No circuit boards, just point-to-point wiring. A very simple signal path. My version appears to be one of several iterations of this design on the part of Audio Electronic Supply (AES)/Cary, in that it has 12AU7s driving (I think) the nicely upgraded 6SN7s. My amp came with JJ 300b power tubes. These have been good tubes. At first I obsessed about other 300b tubes and thought I should swap these out. I read everything I could find on the internet. But the state of the 300b market is very different now, in 2020, than it was in the mid 1990s when the initial wave of interest in these tubes was rising. The reviews on the web dating from 10 and 20 years ago are mainly of historic interest, because all the manufacturers now have an additional 20 years of experience under their belt are are making good tubes. There are now many good options. Weakness:
The experienced amp builder does not consider the biasing scheme to be optimum because both tubes are measured and biased simultaneously, rather than independently. I concur that it would be preferable to be able to bias each tube by itself. He mentioned that the current method requires that the tubes be closely matched, and that's what I purchased when I bought my new tubes, so the biasing method works fine and is very straightforward. Strength:
Open and Airy Midrange with plenty of detail and Bloom, Bass punch and tauntness of solid state designs.
Weakness:
None The SE1 Signature offered by Audio Electronics has the separate power supply update which is highly recommended. It uses the power transformer from the SE1 and uses two additional filament transformers, 6volt regulated filament supply, additional B+ capacitance 1200ufd per channel and of course matching chassis. The supply has the choice of solid state or tube rectifiers offered by Audio Electronics in kit or factory assembled. The amplifer is the most revealing ever with the 300B tubes or your choice of the 2A3 tubes and get this the addition of a headphone jack listening directly to the 300B's!!! My opinion is This is a keeper, No Noise and very musical with all the midrange bloom and detail, nice top no sizzle and deep extended bass. Built to last for a lifetime, contact CaryAudio.com and get yours today. Similar Products Used: SE811 monoblock amplifiers, though the SE1 Signature with power supply update is a stereo amplifier |

Strength:
Harmonic presentation, realism, vocals, smooth, musicality
Weakness:
Slam, authority, soundstage size/bloom (hell its a five watt tube amp) Ive owned the Audio Electronics SE1 Signature for about 4 months. Give it a good break in, at first highs seem very compressed and soundstage has little bloom. The amp lacks authority but its only five watts, but this five watts would supprise just about everyone. The realism (liquidness) smoothness of this amp is unsurpassed (except for maybe Carys top of the line stuff, not heard). With most amps you cant figure out what instrument is playing, with this amp you can figure it out. Its a different type of sound that Im used to. I use my B60 as a preamp, its very good in this respect. Violins, vocals, guitars, piano, you name it, they all sound real. It just lacks the snare slam, overall slam, big soundstage of other mammoth amps that make you feel there in concert. In its own category it deserves a 5 for sound and value. But for what it lacks in the real world Ill give it a four. Very fun to own and look at, amaze friends with 5 watts. Similar Products Used: Bryston B60, Arcam Alpha 9, Soliloquy 5.3 |
