I worked at TV station as an engineer for 36 years and we had these amps for the last 20, and I loved the clean sound they produced. So when the station moved and they retired a couple of a Bryston 2B's (the fools) so I grabbed up one of them and paired it up a couple of Urei 809's.The Urei's are very efficient and have a clean sound to them, and paired up with the Bryston it makes for a super system. |

I had to post a new review on my latest acquisition, a Bryston 2B. This is an original model, really "old school", and built very well. This model looks identical inside to the 2B-LP except for the lack of toroidal transformers, this one uses laminated power transformers (same 725VA rating). This unit also has some history, it has a Radio Canada CBC tag riveted to the front faceplate. I picked this up on e-bay for $200.00 and would have to say it is one of the best buys that I have ever made.

Strength:
Perfect sound.
Weakness:
Revealing, so much so, that it will expose the weak links in your audio chain.
The 2B LP is an incredibly lucid and clear amplifier. The Bryston amp is diminutive in size, and sounds LARGE. The unit I have is older than the graduating class of 2007, and in the 30 years of this hobby, it has no equal. Bryston still manufactures a pro version of this amp today and its design has remained unchanged, if it isn’t broke - don't fix it. The amp is very good at simply reproducing a musical signal and adds nothing. No colorization, no warmth, just the music as it was recorded, and it gets outta the way of the music and simply recreates perfectly.

Weakness:
Look, price ($1,200 for 2x60W) I bought it for a low price because it was in a bad shape and old (1990), but Bryston repaired it free of charge ! It is well built: modular, dual mono with 2 toroidal transformers, but a power supply of only 18,800 microFarads. Subjectively more powewrful than other 60W, though. As for the sound, I am amazed. Excellent soundstage (wide, stable, even my wife could hear the difference with a Creek A52SE !), tight bass, very clear sound. It is slightly inferior to the 2x120 W Conrad-Johnson SA250, but this is expected. Very small, it can be a plus if you lack space. But it runs hot. Strength:
Wonderful bass control
Weakness:
Slightly rolled-off highs (but this may not be a weakness of the amplifier, it could be the upstream audio equipment!) I finished soldering my RCA to XLR interconnects last night, and finally hooked up the Bryston, using my Denon 3803 as a preamp. I was immediately impressed with the incredible bass and midbass control this amp exhibits. It makes my speakers sing like they really never have before. Another noticable improvment over the 3803 is the stereo imaging, creating a sense of presence beyond what I've experienced before. I'm most impressed by the fact that, at "just" 50 watts per channel, this 20 year old amplifier produces just a few decibels less sound than the Denon 3803, which is rated at 110 watts per channel! It seems to me that the massive power reserves available to the Bryston give it control and poise well beyond its rated power. I've also noticed that the transient sounds sparkle and sustain in a very captivating way, with long and deep decay followed by sudden and impressive attacks of bass. A very impressive combintion. I must comment that, using the analog connection from my Denon, the high frequencies sound somewhat rolled-off when compared to the previous configuration (using the Denon directly as a power amplifier and preamp). I suspect that, with an improved preamp, or with better (non home-brewed) analog interconnects, this problem will be addressed. I won't be upgrading this amp soon, though I might add another just like it to bi-amp my speakers... Similar Products Used: None |

Strength:
It sounds great. Outperforms many more expensive units. Small, single rack space, generous heat-sinks. I'm the thrid owner (at least) and it's STILL UNDER WARRANTY. You don't see that too often...
Weakness:
Well, I guess the binding posts are a bit too close together... Nothing's perfect, right? I purchased this amp as a temporary replacement to power the B&W 802's in my mastering room. Once hooked up, I realized that there was nothing temporary about it - It has enough power with comfortable headroom to keep me at the critical 85dB level at the listening position. I believe the unit is rated at 60 watts per channel - Those are pretty generous watts. My facility is a fairly small post-type room, so huge amounts of power does me nothing but run up the A.C. bill. The signal is clear, with sweet open highs, clear mids and tight lows. If I were running 801's, I'd probably want a 3B. However, the clarity and punch through the 802's smaller dual woofers is rich and powerful. Clear, not too colorful, relentless in pointing out source problems during mastering. A perfect match for the 802's or smaller loudspeakers if sheer volume isn't an issue but sheer sound quality is. |

Strength:
Clarity, speed, resolution, range of frequency (wonderful tight bass). 20-year transferrable warranty.
Weakness:
none I can see. My Bryston 12B preamp has no remote control. But so what . . it's the sound that counts. I'm not sure why there hasn't been a review posted for this amp in almost 2 years. I have been fooling around with several sub-$1000 amps and finally found "home" with the Bryston 2B-LP. It didn't come easy. I was originally using NAD products and then Carver (separates and integrated amps) and Parasound and Adcom and B&K. I have travelled many "miles" to find what I was looking for. It wasn't until I purchase a used Bryston preamp that I realized the significant improvement in sound, and then decided to take the next obvious step and get a power amp. The 2B-LP is wonderful. Great bass -- bass I didn't know my CD player and speakers were capable of such good bass, without the use of loundness controls, yet. Crystal clear sound, fast transients, superb resolution. Look no further. Get one of these new or used (mine has another 10 years left on the transferrable warranty)and relax and enjoy the music. In fact, it wasn't until I got back to Bryston brand when I finally was fiddling less with the equipment and enjoying playing the music. I love Bryston and you will too. Similar Products Used: NAD, B&K, Adcom, Parasound -- they are all second best compared to Bryston. Don't let the expense scare you. The warranty makes up for the additional cost and you will stay with this stuff for a long time. |

Strength:
Great definition and soundstage.
Weakness:
Lacks earth-shaking power. Added to my system to replace 3B-ST for rear channel application. No loss of performance. Am currently using as mains power supply and am impressed with the finesse and subtle power of this amp. Crisp, clear performance, with great soundstage and definition. Add the 20-year warranty and this product is perfect in smaller room/speaker applications. Similar Products Used: Bryston 3B-ST |

Strength:
excellent value for money
Weakness:
- if you had unlimited amounts of $$$, you should probably buy a higher powered model got this used for 500 CDN. I was expecting a boost in power as I was retiring my little NAD intergrated unit (which is my pre-amp for now). I knew Bryston was good quality, what I did not expect was my music collection sounding COMPLETELY new. I have had this unit for over a year now, and I am still simply amazed every time I turn my stereo on. I imagine for large speaker applications this unit would be a little underpowered, but for average sized rooms, it has made me forget that I own a television - saturady mornings with a paper, coffee, and Margot Timmins - thank you Bryston! I can only imagine what new speakers and a nice pre-amp will do (soon!) Similar Products Used: arcam intergrated, adcom power amps |
