I bought my Carver amp after my Carver Receiver was stolen, and prior to thatI owned Yamaha. Sound aside the overall durability of the Carver and quality
of it's construction is top notch. You are definitely getting your money's
worth. However my unit is older Carver stuff and I've heard the quality has
gone downhill, however I can't verify this. I can only say that my stuff has
held up very well, not a single problem, ever.
The sound quality is very good. I use Definitive Technology BP-8 speakers and
find them very well matched. The amp is paired with a Carver pre-amp and I find
the sound to be very warm, without the overly bright sound of the Yamaha.
The sound is very smooth and balanced, and given my speaker setup I have power
to spare.
I highly recomend it.

Strength:

warm mids, extended bass, fairly refined overall, dynamic, outstanding value for the money. the perfect start into a hi end system

Weakness:

a bit shrill at the top, can run out of power with inefficient speakers in a large room

I bought my amp about 6 years ago. At the time i had been out of audio for quite soom time. I was looking to assemble a mid priced audio system to replace my old "Sony" receiver! Oh dear...what a light show. It was a huge improvement right from the start. The dynamics were outstanding, the detail more resolved & the highs more extended. Over the years i have continued to upgrade. My current system consists of a YBA 3a CD player, a Sonic Frontiers Line 1 preamp & Sonus Faber Grand Piano speakers. The funny thing is I have yet to replace the old TFM-25. It still sounds great even after upgrading. Its weaknesses are more apparent now but the big question has always been....replace it with what? Oh and by the way if you currently own a Carver preamp sell it & buy something better...poor quality to say the least.
