I owned a pair of st 70s that I used bridged to mono for a year or so. They had been heavily modified and were very tranparent in the top end, with lots of bass (for a tube amp). The most impressive thing about them was that they were so fast, with great dynamics. Eventually, I traded them for a Cyrus II, PSX combo, feeling that the transistor amp presented the "real" music rather than what I percieved to be "tube coloration". Not to mention the buzzing power transformers and other inconvieniences. I do miss them from time to time, though.

I haven't owned one of these since the mid-Eighties, and I was curious to see what it would sound like in my modest system. In a word, terrific, especially for a design that's nearly as old as I am. Wonderful soundstaging, transparent midrange, sweet top end,
bass that's more than adequte. Not the last word in articulation and slam, and the ST-70 tends to sound congested at less than optimum(read high)
volume levels on complex music. But for jazz, vocal, chamber music and especially piano, there's nothing to equal it for less than $1,500.
I paid $600 for mine, modified and updated with new jacks. Yes, it generates a lot of heat and requires a goodly space for ventilation. Yes, it will
barbecue your arm as you reach around the back to find the on/off switch. Yes, there are amps that play louder, sound crisper, and are the
last word in both styling and convenience, just as there are cars that offer the same thing. But owning a ST-70 is like owning a Woody, or a '58
Chevy Impala convertible. There are cars that do everything better, but there is nothing quite like a Woody or an Impala. Five stars for the price, Amen.

How can I add to all that has been said? It is all so true. I purchased my ST70 12 yrs back for $200 along with a Marantz 7T (another gem). It was totally gutted and straight wired by Melos, running Gold Lion KT77's(long gone) and 6u10's. Has anyone heard of this setup? It drives a pair of Bozak DMS 2500's with upgraded tweeters and it rocks the house! This is the only way to listen to your old LPs.

I bought some vintage/original Dynaco ST 70 "iron" (that's the DIYers word for transformers) on ebay and then got a Dyanco ST 70 Series II (like Sound Valves) circuit board on E-bay and some EL34 tubes on e-bay. total cost $330. Hooked it all up in a cheap box and last week ran my CD player with volume pot directly into it.
The sound is marvelous. Fast, liquid, tight, warm, deep, layered. Just blows away, demolishes, destroys and levels the Harmon Kardon solid state integrated amp I was using.

Five stars. On value, six stars. Go on e-bay. Buy and old ST70 that is complete. See if you like it. If you do, upgrade some of the parts. A great mod can be found at www.triodeel.com for $99. Tubes rule!!!!!!!!!!!!!!1

I bought my first ST-70 from Pro Musica in Urbana,IL in 1978, then replaced myH-K Citation 11 pre-amp with a Pas3 about a year later. Frankly, in 22 years since then the only amps I've heard that sounded as clean and musical were all completely out of my price bracket. I recently purchased another ST70/PAS3 pair
as I finally fried the power xformer in my original amp. Anyone got an extra power transformer?? I'd trade my extra PAS3 for it! In short I think David Haffler was ahead of his time. I loved the sound 20 years ago and I'm more convinced today.

Strength:

smooth sound,musical,nice midrange,pride of ownership

Weakness:

weak bass,rolled of treble

I own an original st-70(unmodified)passed down from pop's to me,the sound is good and relaxing, but in my honest opinion this amp has no bass and the treble is dull, what makes me keep this amp is the sweet mid-range(where music lives)suitable for my jazz cd's.I love this amp for what it was meant to do (in the 60's),but music, and the way it was recorded, speaker sensitivity, and speaker loads have changed dramatically since. To my ear's my Arcam Alpha8p(50WPC transistorized amp)Sound's better in many way's.First the bass kills my st-70,the midrange is just as good, and unlike most affordable tubes, the Arcam has detail(not brightness/harshness),there is no hum or any buzz either.I MUST LEAVE YOU WITH THIS,most reviewer's of the st-70 have modified the unit(more than replacing the el-34's,7199's,and the gz-34)and are really reviewing a hybrid tube amp in a Dynaco chassis. All those upgraded tubes,transformer's,etc...,change the performance of the original st-70,as the performance of the real one was great for it's time,it cant keep up with today's technology, tube or transister wise.

Strength:

Warm, rich midrange

Weakness:

Bass

I had this amp with PAS 2 Preamp more than 10 years (this model appeared in 1960s, but this Web page has only "1995") which I got for $60 with original vintage tubes. Recently, I replaced the old tubes with modern tubes (EL34s from Svetlana, 7199s from Sovtek, and 12AX7s from JAN Phillips, and "www.tubestore.com" appears to be an excellent source for the tubes. They delivered them next day!). After they were broken in for a couple of days, the sound of the amp became marvelous which I never had before with this amp. It was a really revealing experince. I usually did not believe in the terms like airy, warm, rich, liquidity, etc., which highend audio magazines enjoy using them. But I think what they are talking about may have something which science can not tell exactly. Anyway, bottom line is: I liked this amp very much, but now I fell in love!! If you see an AD for this vintage amp, just grab it (if less than $200) and replace the old tubes, that will make your room filled with wonderful sound!!
