Strength:

Awesome amp. I switched from a SAE 2200, which I loved, and really noticed a difference. Even though it is old technology, you'll be hard pressed to find an equal, even today. Have only tripped protection circut once, after hours of playing it, extremely loud. My speakers are a pair of 12 inch, 3 way JBL's, in kit form, I built from Heatkit. If you are lucky enough to find one used, buy it.

Weakness:

power cord, I replaced mine with a 3 #14 wire cable, and a hospitol grade receptacle.

Will never sell this amp. I am also a musician, and use it as an amp for my Fender P-bass, with Electro voice 15 inch,
2 way speakers. This amp is from the 1980's, but you can only select as far back as 1995. Thank you

Strength:

Plenty of clean power. Built/weighs like a tank!

Weakness:

None!

Best built and sounding amp for the money made! I am finally satisfied with my system. I have (3) of these monsters powering my home theater system. They sound better than the surround amp ( onkyo tx-ds787 ) I bought. So I hooked them all up to the surround's pre-outs! WOW! Its no wonder why rock bands and movie theaters still use these amps. They also look really nice with the optional sculptured face panel. Soundvalves has the face panel for around $50 bucks along with other miscellaneous parts for old Haflers. Thanks David Hafler for making a great American product! There's no doubt that in another 20 years people will still be bragging on their DH-500'S

Strength:

20 amps continuous, 60 amp peaks of clean power. Dollar for dollar, this amp can't be beat. In 1984, or now.

Weakness:

Can't think of one.

The $745.00 also includes a Musical Concepts Mod.

Back in 1984 (or 83?), The Absoulute Sound reviewed this amp with the Mod I got. In short, the reviewer hooked up the amp to his sub-woofers, and noticed that the Cello sounded "confined", to the other 6 instruments in the recording. He search around his system, all looked good. Put the original amp back in, and there was no "confinment". Finally, he got in contact with the recording engineer, and found out that when this particular recording was made, the room wasn't big enough for all the instruments, so, they put the cello in the closet with the door open. Well, the reviewer replaced his $3000.00 amp with that Hafler (and so did 2 other TAS reviewers, later).

That's what sold me on this amp. And since then, it has run everything I needed it to run. It took me many years to build my system, and this Hafler has never let me down. Always reliable, clean sound. Every now and then, clean it, let it breath, and tighten conections, and there shouldn't be a problem.

Some other ideas Mr. Hafler gave us on this amp is: it runs in class A operation up to 15 watts, A/B after that; the DC protection circuit is in parrallel to the main circuit, not in series (like most other amps); and, overheating or dc will shut off the amp, not the load (another review magazine actually ran this amp into a short, and the amp didn't shut off until it was too hot).

BTW, a British review magazine found that Chrysler black paint matches the amp's paint.

Hey, can you beat this Hafler? Yes. But not for $750.00 now, or $3,000.00, in 1984.

Good luck!

Currently, the DH-500 runs my sub woofers. I have a pair of Dynaco Mark III's on top (another Dave Hafler classic).

I bought my Hafler D500 in 1982 in kit form, and its has been running flawlessly ever since. It is part of the family, and I can't bear to part with it. I have shipped it all over the country as I have moved around, and never had a problem with it, except for blowing one fuse. The thing will power anything, and play it louder than you could ever want. I am thinking about getting another one, except I don't know who to switch it into mono mode. Best thing I have ever purchased

Strength:

Sound, Power, being able to go from c d player to the back of the amp, cutting out the pre amp

Weakness:

The fan, no RCA jacks

I just picked this amp up from a friend of mine a couple of months ago and have been very impressed with the sound quality. It's a very clean and detailed sound with a great low end and nice airy transparent mids and highs.I do most of my listening late at night at low volumes and the sound is great, you don't loose a thing. This is where the problem comes in, after playing for about an hour the fan kicks into high gear almost covering up the sound. This didn't seem right so I contacted a company in Long Island NY thats is known for there work on these amps and the guy told me ths should not be happenig. He said the only time the fan should go into high speed is if it's being run really hard. So I'm in the process of getting that fixed and while I'm at it I'm going to have them put a nice pair of RCA jacks in the back, now I'm using 1/4" jack adapters, with these things done the amp will be perfect.

Check this out... Less than .025% thd@any power level up to 255 WPC continuous average @ 8 ohms, Im Distortion (SMPTE) less than .0075 from 1 watt to 255 watts @ 8 0hms,Typical thd @ 255 watts into 8 ohms from 1khz- .002%; 10 khz.007%... and on and on. Pretty hard to argue with those facts and the fact that these amps are virtually bulletproof from day 1 thru year 20 + wouldn't you say?

Weakness:

?????

Currently running DQ 10's & subs with DH 500's, couldn't be more pleased. No popping on start up or shutdown, always smoothe and uninterrupted power regardless of needs at any particular moment, great reliability, value for the dollar is magnificent!!!

Weakness:

Yea Right

I have had this amp for 8 years now and it has had 0 problems. I have abused it "at least I thought it was abuse" and it laughed and said is that all you got? have had 1 ohm loads on it rarely 2 ohms regularly and 4 ohms when I used it for P.A. running subs at obscene spl's. I melted 2 brand new Crate 700w x 2 amps running mids and highs trying to keep up with it!!! (That was something to see sparks flew 2 feet out of the facs side vents!) Then I brought it home and put it back in my home system and it still sounds better than my h/k or my old dynaco. The DH-500 cannot be beaten for 4 times the price you can find them for. 5 stars is not enough!!!

If you can still find one of these babies for a reasonable price, buy it!!! I have owned this amp for almost 10 years now and have been nothing but impressed since day one. At 250 watts a channel, it will drive anything out there plus the sound is quality is top notch. I have since upgraded my amp in my main stereo and use the Hafler in a second system. It was incredible that it took the $2000 Aragon 8008ST to finally outshine my trusty Hafler. This amp is built like a tank and has some cool features like a 3 speed internal fan, and is all internally wired with thick 12 guage Monster cable. The capacitors are humungous and the amp weighs in at around 55 pounds!! The amp is dead quiet- no hums etc, no damaging thumps on power up/down. It is a great amp, and for its age, it will still beat much of whats out there today.

I recently took my fifteen year old Hafler DH 500 in for some needed repair. While I was there I asked the technician if there were any upgrades available for this model. His response was simple 'none needed'. Sounds great!! By the way I am using the matching Hafler 110 pre-amp and currently running a pair of NHT 2.5i.
