Strength:
Build quality, output autoformers (delivers 300 Watts into 4, 8 or 16 ohm loads. Exceptional soundstage reproduction. Clear and tight bass response.
Weakness:
Needles on Watt meters are difficult to see from more than 5 feet away. I waited to find this amplifier second hand. The wait saved me about $1700. I have bought all my McIntosh equipment second hand because their new prices are slightly out of my league. For $2200, I stole the MC300. The bass response was the first thing I noticed. Deep bass but not boomy. The next thing I noticed was that listening to music that I was very familiar with had me saying "I never heard that before!" The details that this amplifier brings out just have to be experienced. I was listening to a live CD, and it is unbelievable that I can here them kicking guitar cords around the stage and talking to each other and what sounds like placing a drink down on the stage or something - I can hear everything. Stuff that I never noticed before. Having a really good preamp helps out and I am running my CD player through its digital output and using the MAC-3 as a D/A converter helps tremendously. If you haven't already, do yourself the favor and check out a McIntosh amplifier. You can find them on EBAY or wherever, they are very sought after for a reason.....What are you waiting for.
