Strength:

Great Highs, Mid Range and Sound Stage.

Weakness:

VERY HEAVY AMP

The NAK PA7 is by far one the best sounding solid state amps I have had in my system. I am currently using a Rare Purist Audio Sattelite speaker system w/subs,a AR SP7 Pre Amp and Rega Planar CD player and Power Line 2 cable. I have had several AR,Threshold and Krell amps in my system and can say that this is a masterpiece design by Nelson Pass and having it produced in Japan by NAK was a great idea because of the rigid production standards and attention to detail the company is known for combined to make a wonderfull sounding amp that I would A/B with any Krell,AR etc. Dollar for Dollar this is the best buy in used audio on the market and the only way this one will leave my house is when I will it to the next generation audiophile in my family.

Strength:

Warm Musical Power, wide soundstage.

Weakness:

Can sound dark with the wrong speakers.

Nakamichi PA-7 mkII: I''ve owned this amp for over 10 years now, and I still think it''s one of the best around. BUT, only when matched properly in a system. It''s not a bright amp by any means. Warm smooth highs, and a generous midbass make it a great match for slightly bright or bass shy speakers. I went throught several amps trying to find a match for my difficult M-L Sequels. I owned a PS Aduio 200c, Counterpoint SA-20, Aragon 4004, and a Sumo Polaris, but the PA7 was the one that I stayed with for 10 yrs. The total freedom from any grain or harshness is the key, with a very deep wide soundstage. It invites you to turn it up, with seemingly limitless reserves of power. I don''t think I have ever heard it clip. I''ve heard mention of harshness by other reviewers, but that must be referring to the original PA7, not the mkII. I have only recently been looking to replace it, as it is a bit too dark for my new B&W Nautilus 803''s. I bought a used Bryston 4B-ST and, while the 4B is more controlled in the lows and more detailed (brighter), it has a hardness in the midrange that fatigues me. If I could keep only one, I''d still pick the PA7. I may replace this amp for my N803 system, but I don''t think I could ever sell it.

Excellent amp. Placed in my reference system, which is composed mainly of REVOX/Proceed. This amp is nicknamed "Der Spinner" or "The Spider" and is without flaw. The STASIS Toplogy is inherently stable.

Strength:

Sound, Massive construction and quality, clarity and power for a 225W amp.

Weakness:

The protection won´t allow it to distort so if you push it REALLY far on a difficult load it will protect. That can be a real bonus if you don´t like CRAZY db LEVELS !!

The best sounding amp I have heard (I have not been able to do A-B test with KRELLS ...) I love it so much than when the mains condensers blew ( because my house´s eath aws defective) I have spent the last two years looking all around the world for a replacement... that reflects HOW mUCH I LOVE IT !!
If you even find one hear it.... also it is a BRUTE and SEXY AMP...no leds or the like just quality NON compromised build.

My PA-7 has performed admirably for over 12 years. I felt compelled to provide a review because I am at a point where I am planning to buy a 5 channel amp (I am leaning towards the Parasound HCA-2205). For home theater, I have my system bi-amped (a Yamaha receiver for the center and surrounds, with the PA-7 powering the mains). In critical listening sessions (stereo), I have not found a better amplifier short of the megabuck high end systems at four times the price of the PA-7. Perhaps this is because Nelson Pass, who designed the Threshold SA1/2/3 series of Stasis amplifiers was responsible for the design of the PA-7.

The detail and clarity of the amplifier is unsurpassed in anything I have listened to. The soundstage and mid-range are very open. The bass is rock solid. The sound is warm; timbre and localization of the instruments are just about perfect. I have never felt tired, even after long listening sessions.

The PA-7 is a high current design and I believe that it is biased towards class a, since it does run very hot. However, with the massive heat sink and weight, the heat has never led to a problem over the years.

I love the amp som much that I am facing a dilemma about what to do with the PA-7. I would hate to take it out of my system, (but the 5 channel Parasound is nice, too). Perhaps one option is to look for a good three channel amp to pair it with the big Nak. In spite of its age, this amp is highly recommended!

Strength:

Ability to drive low impedances, good bass definition, high power, very low distortion, a very transparent amp with little coloration.

Weakness:

The PA-7 is a complicated amp to repair. I had the amp since 1986 and one channel blew in 1996. I had to ship the amp to Nakamichi in California. My local dealer was clueless. The cost to repair the amp was about $250, but shipping killed me. The rear panel was also damaged in shipping. I suggest taking those little legs off when you ship the amp to prevent such damage. Also, as other people have mentioned, the PA-7 generates a great deal of heat. I put the amp on top of my stereo cabinet to let it breathe. Finally, this amp is HEAVY ... about 70Lbs.

I use the Nakamichi because I have a set of Apogee Caliper speakers and they can only be drive by high current amps such as the Nakamichi, Krell, Bryston, and Adcom. Of those amps, The Nakamichi was the best price performer. The Bryston has a slighly warmer mid-bass, but I think the Nakamichi was cleaner overall. I use the Nakamichi CA-5 premap and an Adcom 575 CD player with the class A output section. The PA-7 is much better than the Adcom amps I tested. I think at the time, the Adcom used bi-polar transitors and the transitors in the Nakamichi were Mosfet with a much higher slew rate. The high slew rate translated into nice high-end details. Cymbals and bells, really rang like the real thing.

Strength:

Lovely sound

Weakness:

Runs hot, weak back panel that can be damaged in shipping, even in original box and packing.

One of the best sounding transistor amps ever. Nelson Pass masterpiece pushed to the limit. Sounds better than PA7II. Krells sound marginally better but are rediculously over priced (that's what they used to say about NAK).An absolute best buy these days.

Kevin Sweeney/I worked there when sound ruled!

Consumo
