Strength:

Clear highs, good detail and very smooth sounding amplifier
and cosmetically attractive unit.

Weakness:

Not sold in US anymore

The large meters, dual monoblock design and smooth sound make this amp a great buy for the money. The Grand Integra M508 delivers strong bass and accurate mid's and high's most often found in much more expensive amplifiers. There is no comparison in sound between this hard to find M508 it's popular but incompetent sibling the Integra M504. I have not had any service problems at all, or any problems with caps as some other owners have expressed. If you can find one of these amps for sale, Buy It!! You definitely won't regret it.

Tight bass. Played it very loudly when hot so the capacitors cooked. Had toput eight new ones. I like the sound although it's dirt for the Krell folks.

It's a Tank allright!Sounds is good, but don't overload otherwise you'll risk killing the main capacitors.(Common fault in these models) When this has happend change de capacitors for same type only then with a much higher voltage then they will last...

I had the M504 and it sucked. My Onkyo receiver had better low guitars and I have Klipsch Cornwalls. If the guitars don't sound strong on a horn system , then something isn't right. I bought the M508 and there isn't any comparison. It blows away the M504 in every respect so you guys can just buy those cheap wimpy M504's from Circuit City. If you would just listen to the M508 you would hear the difference. My M508 also had all the power caps go bad and Onkyo said my line voltage here was too high. That was over 5 years ago, so they were just trying to cover up defective caps.

Strength:

Best amp ever made for roughly $1000

Weakness:

They aren't sold in the US any more.

This is the baby Grand Integra amp Onkyo made in the late 80s in an attempt to get into the lucrative audiophile market. While this thing was available Stereophile listed it as a recommended Class C component, usually the least expensive in that class.

As far as clean 200 watts/channel sound goes, you can't beat this baby for less than twice the price, even now when it sells for roughly $1400 in Japan. Even at $2800 Canadian it is still not bad (this price was quoted to me in 1998 in Toronto -- they were still available in Canada then and might still be) It has incredible depth and detail and it can pack a good wallop. I have it paired with some Vandersteen 3a sigs and it has no problem handling them.

I put this head to head against the Sunfire mentioned above when I was auditioning speakers and got the salesman to shut up as to how good the Sunfire was when he heard this. He didn't realize how good Onkyo used to be.

Trying to find one of these used though is tough. No one really wants to part with them. At the Canadian price it's still tough to beat (the Sunfire mentioned above is roughly $2200 U.S. or $3000 Canadian) . Still, if you're on a budget and can find one of these used for $500 to $700 U.S., just buy it -- you won't regret it (ignore the Orion bluebook price on this one -- no one will sell one of these for that little) . The worst that will happen is that the original capacitors are still in it (highly unlikely at this point if the amp has seen any form of regular use) and will need to be upgraded (and they should be upgraded -- the stock spec'ed ones were not up to the job). Better this used than an Onkyo M-504 new.

Bought this amp in 1987 for $ 500 new. Sounds great with Carver pre amp. Only problem I have had is a capasitor went bat and a bulb for the VU meter. This thing is a tank but a beauty.

Strength:

Good sounding amp in its price range and above that.Very good looking product and well built (except power supply capacitors and undersized circuit for them )

Weakness:

Just another Onkyo M-508 with bad caps.Replacment caps from Onkyo are $90CAD=cca $60US a piece,$480 for 8 caps...!!!!!Is this any cheaper in U.S.A? Usualy overheated circuit board require repair too.

As a electronic tech and Hi-Fi nut I'll wright down some coments about this amp.Initialy this amp was great value for a money, until I got hit by the repair cost on it.Caps are hard to find,non-standard size and expensive to replace.Amp sounds real good.I wouldn't mind quicker bass(like Bryston)or cleaner mids like Hafler but still better sounding amp then many in its price range and above.
