Strength:

Great sound.

Weakness:

A brute to lift.

I purchased this amp after reading many reviews about how great it is for the price. I was nervous about buying this without being able to listen too it, but was I ever surprised. I ordered it before the christmas holiday and they has it to my house in 3 days in time for the holidays. This thing is a brute and you will need two people to move it. Once I hooked it up everything Much to my surprise, the amp started smoking. I was thinking what am I going to do now. I contacted outlaw (this was on a sunday night) via email, and by tuesday lunch I had a new amp. Way to go Outlaws. That is some of the great customer service I have heard about. I proceeded to hook up the new amp and it wokrs wonderfully. The sound is much cleaner then I could have dreamed. After one month of playing the amp is getting much smoother in its sounds and continues to sound better and better. I would highly recommend this to any one.

Strength:

Model 950 Pre Amp Processor: Clean sound, exceptional setup flexibility for complex Home Theater systems, comprehensive digital decoding, 5.1 Multichannel analog inputs for DVD-A or SACD, true HD switching capability. Model 770 Power Amp: power, more power, even more power, and what appears to be MILSPEC build quality

Weakness:

The 770 looks like MILSPEC too, but who cares. Heat from the amp. I know that other reviews here say different, but mine gets hot. I wouldn't stack anything on top of it, but since the electronics are separated from the heat source, I don't worry about them like I would with an A/V receiver

For those of you who might be wary of buying this unit over the internet, don't hesitate. I've run Pioneer and Pioneer Elite stereo and A/V receivers exclusively for 30 years (I like the sound of MOSFETS), but the last two burned out at 35 months of service each, and I was advised to move on to separates. After reading the reviews and recommendations in The Perfect Vision magazine, I ordered the Outlaw Model 950 Preamplifier/Processor and the Model 770 200-watt-times-seven channel amp. All I can say is Why Did I Wait So Long? After so many years with the same brand, I wondered if an entirely different collection of electronics (Motorola DSP vs. Cirrus Logic) would sound good to me. They don't sound good. They sound great. They sound fabulous. When listening to CDs, my Outlaws provide a very precise soundstage, wider than before and surprisingly deep, allowing my Infinity Interlude IL60s, just the two of them, to almost surround me with sound. The Interludes have built-in 500 watt amplifiers for the side-firing 10" subwoofers, and with the Pioneers I had to keep the Infinity's separate volume controls turned low. But the Outlaw 770 provides such clean sound, so much added clarity in the mid-bass, mid-treble and treble frequencies that I've turned them up. Read Wayne Garcia's review from Perfect Vision at the Outlaw Website (www.outlawaudio.com), he says it so much better than I can, but I've never heard a more satisfying sound. I find myself grinning constantly while listening to music I've heard hundreds of times before. And how do my Outlaws deliver when used as a Home Theater System? I run a seven-channel setup (all Interludes) and select DTS-ES or Dolby-EX whenever possible. The Model 950 Pre Amp Processor has a comprehensive feature set of digital surround processing capabilities, and a generous panel of inputs/outputs which include two HD-ready (40+ MHz) component inputs and six assignable digital sound inputs. The Model 950 instruction manual is as good as any I've ever seen and can be viewed at their website, but Home Theater newbies may want to invite a more knowledgable friend over for an installation party. The steering logic in the 950 is exceptional, better than anything I ever heard from the Pioneers, but that may be because of the capabilities of the Model 770 amplifier. In a word, awesome. Just listen to the THX opening on the Abyss DVD. You hear EVERY note--without a fade-in--which was apparently the result of my receivers' back channels scavenging power from the front channels of an overtaxed amplifier section. The Outlaw has two giant toroidal power amps to supply it's seven channels, and the difference has to be heard to be believed. Presence, separation, definition. With a musicality that will handle every score from Amadeus to the Matrix. Thrills and chills. This is my first experience with separates, so maybe they all sound like this. But not at this price. I paid $2398 for my Outlaw combo, plus $185 for two-day shipment from Massachusetts to Arizona, or $2583 to my door. More than I payed for my last Pioneer Elite, but less than they want for the current model. And they don't give you a 30-day money back guarantee. In my opinion, they also don't give you this kind of performance

Strength:

Outstanding power Heavy duty binding posts Quiet operation Massive heat sinks, (no fan).

Weakness:

Heavy Pilot light always on

I have had this amp for 6 months now. So far not one problem with it. It is a powerhouse! It drives a seven B&W speaker system, the not too efficient CDM NT series. It has never gotten hot no matter how hard I drive it with all channels. It is a very quiet amp. It tames my speakers well, (they are a kind of crisp speaker). Just wish it had a pretty blue pilot light instead of an ugly glowing green button that never goes off unless you turn the main power button off.

Strength:

It's a beautiful amp, a joy to set up, and from all initial encounters, seems to be a wonderful performer in every respect. For the price, I doubt this amplifier can be beaten.

Weakness:

Very HEAVY, rack mount ears not available.

I've only had this amplifier for a few hours and I'm already madly in love with this thing. Moving from my B&K amplifier to this one, I immediately noticed that the dialog cleared up. Other aspects of the sound also seemed to have cleared up too, but it's too early for me to be sure. (It could also be me being biased to expect to hear an improvement.) This thing is *heavy*. Make sure your rack/shelf can sustain 100 pounds. When I first picked it up, I thought somebody had replaced the interior with lead ingots as a joke or something. The weight astonishes me every time I move the amp. The amp design is wonderful. I like how clearly and simply the back panel is laid out. The trigger solution is simple and effective; I got it working within minutes. There was some confusion about whether this amp requires a 20 amp circuit. Apparently, it's a *recommendation* that you put it on a 20 amp circuit, but not a requirement. It has a standard three-prong plug, and not one of those funky 20 amp jobbies.

Strength:

Incredible wattage, great to good price compared to similar amps.

Weakness:

This thing is HUGE. The DHL delivery person couldn't budge it--we carried it to my garage, and I carried it inside at the risk of hernia and back. Consider this: 100 lbs of concentrated amp weighs more than, say, your dishwasher, or possibly your couch.

The price paid was actually less than shown--I bought this along with the 950 preamp/processor, which was a total savings of about $200 off the individual prices. This amp, simply put, can peel paint and induce labor. 200 W/channel, 7 channels--good lord. The combination of the Outlaw 950/770 can't be beat, for price and features. In essence, this is a massive power amplifier ("massive" in its ability, and in its weight--roughly 100 lbs). Using the 950 preamp, I've been very happy with its output, and have found virtually no noise through my system at high volumes and no load (i.e. when using no signal source, but turning the volume all the way up). The unit uses all passive heat sinks (no fan), but even at high volume, seems to get no more than lukewarm. Outstanding value for the number of channels and the wattage--certainly more than most people (including me) will ever fully utilize.

Weakness:

NONE

Oh baby. My first time with separates with the purchase of the 950/770 combo. This thing is a monster. I needed help picking it up to get it into my truck when it was delivered to work. At home, I had to move it around a couple of times and I broke out a sweat. Make sure you can life a 100 pounds before you move it on your own. This think has tons of power. The 950/770 combo replaced a Kenwood 1080VR which was about 5-6 years old and was my first reciever. With the Kenwood, there was little to no sound comming from my surrouds due to lack of sufficient power. My mains and center for music sucked at higher levels. The detail was poor, there was no umpf no excitement no detail no nothing. The 770 has brought my Boston Acustic VR40's VR12 and VRS Pros to new life. I've never heard them sing like this before. There is so much more detail and the volume at higher levels just sounds sooo crisp and clean and not harsh and crappy like my old Kenwood. I actually sat and listened to a bunch of old CD's again the other night instead of watching TV. An amazing amp and a great bargain. If you don't have separates and don't want to sink thousands and thousands into A/V equipment, get the 950/770 combo, you won't be sorry.

Never had an external amp. Maybe that's why I'm so pleased so take my review with a grain of salt for those who have had experience with these things before. I'm just grinning from ear to ear.

I went to Recievers about 5 years ago, trying to save space in my rack.Even though Recievers have come along way, they still do not match seperates.I was never really satisfied and figured I would get used to them.I finally decided to add a seperate power amp again.I regret waiting so long. I bought the Outlaw 770 and have been very satisfied.I am enjoying all my music cd's again with the added power only a seperate power amp can provide. Movies listening has never been better. With the Outlaw I am hearing details I have never noticed before.I have owned MANY amps in the mid price range and this is the best I have ever had! Do not hesitate to buy from Outlaw over the Internet ,as their service is as good as any Hi-Fi store and their prices are more affordable.

Strength:

Performance(see above). Extremely well built and does not run hot.

Weakness:

Almost too heavy to move by yourself. Power light never goes off when using a trigger.

I was using Marantz MA500 125wpc mono blocks for my two front speakers before making the jump to the 770. First thing potential buyers should know is that this thing is HEAVY! Tipping the scales at just under 100 lbs should help someone who sees weight as a sign of quality. Like the reviewer before me I also received the 950 pre/pro as well but I hooked the 770 up to my old set-up for comparison. (Side Note: The 950/770 combo is absolutely killer for 2500 dollars). My initial impressions after hooking it up was it seemed more dynamic and open than the monoblocks. The bass also seemed tighter and more "focused" than I was used to before the 770, which in my opinion is a major plus. Since I have always thought the marantz MA500 did a great job I was surprised at how much detail was added to music with the 770. If I had to sum it up with a few words I would say it sounds crisp, airy, and exact. I still can't over the value Outlaw has provided with this Amp. If you order it with their 950 pre/pro you can take 200 dollars off the cost.

Strength:

Very clean and accurate at an incredible price with unparralled support.

Weakness:

Some reported QC problems, however I experienced NONE!!

The 770 replaced a McIntosh MC7100 (100w 2 channel)and I have found a HUGE improvement in detail, depth and overall sound quality. I also switched from a Rotel ProLogic processor to Outlaw's 950 processor so it's impossible to say which component caused the improvement. Their forum would suggest some QC problems, but you will also find their customer support to be unparralleled. Seems any real problems are solved with a new unit at the customer's door within 48 hours and prepaid shipping for the return. I will say, however, the sound quality is absolutely first rate. And with Outlaw's unconditional 30 day trial period and terrific pricing, I can strongly recommend their products.
