Strength:

ultra clean, high current massive pure Class A amp

Weakness:

big, heavy, supposedly low power for today's speakers

I bought this 60 pound monster, the Class A Pioneer M-22, for $250 about 12 years ago. It is 30 watts per side, dual mono amp with dual transistor differential, plentiful negative feedback in the 1st stage reference amp with transformers and capacitors the size of Foster’s lager cans.

Ratings are THD is .01% at 30 watts, .005% at 1 watt into 8 ohms. I bought it cheap, new and in the box. With my big old Klipsch Cornwalls, I figure I might be using 1/4 watt most of the time. However at that low level, the THD is almost as high as it at 30 or 35 watts (which the amp can do, but only at high levels of distortion.

This amp was apperently made to show off Pioneer’s ability – and it does. It is very clean. I hope to use it to power a pair of electrostatic headphones someday soon. I only had to take it in once for repairs. The workman could not stop praising the quality of it and all it had was a blown fuse (located inside).
