Strength:
cheap, cheap, cheap.Due to home cinema buffs perceptions of this amp being totally out of date this amp can be picked up for a bargain price,no hdm no dts means i was able to pick up pioneers 1998 flagship list 1200 pounds for a measly 80 quid from ebay ,for which you get a thx approved amp with fantastic build quality,5x110 watts rms(6 0hms)good dolby digital 5.1and a plethora of pro logic modes for the tv,the sound is clear and detailed with good channel separation, still a good flexible amp that provides more muscle than you would get from the lower end hdmi amps.
Weakness:
Plenty of em,no dts no, hdmi, no 96khz.what i find particularly frustrating is bass weight in stereo mode.i dont think my subwoofer works at all in this mode, which would would be understandable, buts it sounds like the low freqs have been filtered out from the fronts and the sub disabled ,leaving it completely lacking in bass in the bass department in stereo mode,i avoid stero mode at all cost I bought the pioneer vsa e06 mainly to us the optical input to get 5.1 from sony ps3 without going to the expense of purchasing an amp with hdmi inputs, also use the spdif input with eurovox cable reciever Customer Service never used Similar Products Used: a couple of low end sony hdmi av amps |

Strength:
THX,Comprehensive remote control
Weakness:
Sound a bit too 'bright' Coupled with the Pioneer 717 DVD player the home theatre experience is terrific. I think its a bit sneaky though rating it as 100w per channel into 6ohms when the convention is 8ohms. This is a minor criticism of an otherwise class act. |

I bought this amplifier partly because of the finish - (The same gold as the Pioneer DVL-909 LD/DVD player) but also because my old VSX-804 would not play DD.Wow !!! |

Strength:
Good looking, THX-certified, works excellent with dv-717, gives clear and natural sound, the bass is far more precise.
Weakness:
Missing DTS decoder, no 5.1 input. Sweet music to my ears, even though this amplifier works best with Dolby Digital. Similar Products Used: Other amplifiers from Pioneer and Denon. |

Strength:
THX, Low Distortion, Dolby Digital
Weakness:
No DTS or 24bit/96Khz Dacs, Needs a Subwoofer The amp was very good value when I purchased it and iam still pleased with it now. The sound from it has a wonderful midrange for music but must be partnered with bass heavy speakers or a subwoofer for best effect. Similar Products Used: Various Denon Receivers |

Weakness:
Bass performance in stereo mode. Graphic equaliser. I've owned this amp for a while and I'd say that for the price it's superb. My main criticism is of the bass control on large speakers. Admittedly I'm pushing it a bit but I've got Mirage M1's (huge bipolar speakers) and the bass is all over the place very flabby. The bass and treble controls are crap and anyone using this in stereo should stick to direct mode. I've been driving the amp with a Pioneer 717, which is a great match. It gives a very clean sound and great imaging. Make sure you use full range speakers at the front and back, as the amp will make use of them. Also make sure your centre speaker has a fair bit of bass or it'll show up. So highly recommended as long as you're not driving really big speakers. Mind you it's got pre-outs so you can drive separate power amps. The sound on the whole is typical Pioneer (I've owned lots of their stuff) very clean in the treble and midrange, some people may call this bright but it's not, it just requires decent speakers. I use Chord cables, which are a superb match (odyssey 17 pounds per metre) but if you've got a bright sound already don't use this.
