Strength:
Musical midrange, detail, smooth, three dimensional staging, easy to listen and enjoy, with great build quality.
Weakness:
None The combination of the FetValve EC preamp and the 350hc amplifier proves to be a synergetic match. Proving that the designers intention was for optimal matching for the musical enjoyment. Both use a combination of mosfet's for current amplification and tubes for voltage control. Both exhibit great control from the high frequency's to the low end bass. Three dimensional sound staging with air and instrumental control, having all the advantages of a hybrid design with no disadvantages. Highly recommended, excellent build quality, reasonable pricing, three year warranty, meeting all my expectations and then some!! Similar Products Used: FetValve EC preamp |

Wonderful! Its like the sound goes into it and nothing but air magically amplifies it on its way out. Of course at 35 lbs there is more than air in there. This is probably one of the best circuit designs you can buy. This amp does to the amplifier world what Balanchine did for the dancer's physique, that race horse look with all the control and power of the earlier designs, and probably more, but without the extra bulk by simply using the parts better. There is no reason to pay more unless you want ungodly amounts of power and/or something prettier. Its the last amplifier I'll ever buy (for the next 20 years). |

Strength:
Natural soundstage, great harmonic structure particularly in the midrange, relatively cable tolerant, easy for preamps to drive, quiet, coherent
Weakness:
Capacitor-coupled output can get boomy with some woofer/crossovers,not for low-impedance loads (more powerful model is available for that use)ugly case (who cares?) speaker jacks in awful place This amp was 6 years old when I tried to drive a one-ohm load with it which,of course, blew the outputs. It sat awaiting repairs till I sent it back to the factory in sept of 2001(and Mr.Van Alstine didn't even tell me what an idiot I was). In the meantime I have had many fine amps come thru my house and was happily using the Sonagraph as my main amp. That is until the Fet-valve 300i came home. Strength:
Easy to listen too, overall great midrange and dynamics.
Weakness:
Not much air, sensitive to higher level inputs from CD sources, some time to break in. Having already reviewed this amplifier, it offers much value for the money. Great for higher power demands for insensitive speakers. Found the amplifier neither bright nor laid back, very easy to listen too with great dynamic extremes. For my overall listening and type of speakers used, I preferred tube electronics, though, this is no way reflects the great quality of this design. Similar Products Used: AVA EC preamp |

Strength:
Excellent clarity, dynamics, good bass extension, and a beautiful/open mid-range. Works very well with my VAC tube pre-amplifier. The presentation of the music is nothing short of stunning with this combination.
Weakness:
It took a long time to break in; I replaced a Belles 150 only because my Platinum Audio Solos are very insensitive and needed more juice to sound their best. Initially I didn't like the AVA's - however, since breaking in they have been superb. Excellent amplifier that sounds good on a lot of different types of music and mates well with an all tube preamplifier. Has enough power to drive virtually any speaker. It is an excellent performer and a great value at the price. Similar Products Used: none |

Strength:
I have found that all of the Van Alstine equipment, not only sounds VERY GOOD,but the price is resonable.
Weakness:
Not the ultimate in air. Granted you can't hear it without buying one,but do yourself a favor and go for it.HIGHLY RECOMMENDED. Similar Products Used: Many various amps of all costs. |

Strength:
Imaging, both depth and laterally. Dynamic range and tonal accuracy.
Weakness:
Compared to anything I have heard - none. After reading about Van Alstine products for years I started converting my system piece by piece to AVA products. First was the Omega IV DAC then a FET Valve preamplifier and most recently the FET Valve 550hc amplifier. Each and every piece represented a giant leap forward in the way of "getting closer to the source." The pieces that AVA electronics replaced were far from run of the mill category. Each time the AVA component was inserted in the chain things got WAYYYYY better. My speakers of Magnepan 1.6's and I thought I was getting good results with a modified ARC D-76A. Because of the improvements up to that point I decided to try the 550hc to see if it would dominate as the others had. This amplifier represents the single greatest improvement.
