Strength:

Everything! Outstanding equipment for 13 years and going strong.

Weakness:

Absolutely nothing.

I have been a proud owner of a Yamaha MX600/U since 1991. It is essentially the same as the MX-1 but has the LED output levels, something I kind of like. I was going to sell it (the wife wanted me too!)and went to a lot of effort to prepare online documentation for ebay. I don't think I have the heart to get rid of it. To this day it is best audio equipment I have ever owned. Even after 13 years of age the sound continues to be smooth and powerful...made in Japan!. I've got Paradigm Reference Studio/60's hooked up to it and the sound quality is phenominal. Distortion on this baby is nill. I also have a 1991 Yamaha TX-530 Tuner hooked up. It continues to be an excellent tuner. Even the original remote control still works! Screw the wife, I'm keeping all of it! Maybe I'll get rid of her. Anyway, if you have a chance to buy the CX,MX600/U or the TX-530, don't hesitate. I'm curious if the CX-1 and MX-1 are still manufactured in Japan.

Strength:

ROCK SOLID construction. There is NO speaker load this baby can't handle. It has never gone above operating temperature. EVERYONE SHOULD HAVE ONE!

Weakness:

Don't drop it on our foot!

My insurance company choose this AMP as a replacement AMP for Carver 55 that was stolen. I was concerned, but when it was delivered...WOW! I have literally coupled this AMP with over 6 different sets of speakers, just to see how it would perform. Everything from Bose 901s (yes I know...ok! shoot I was young) to B&W's which I now own. Old ADCOM GTP-500 pre-amp that has a lab setting that by-passes the capacitors. Pioneer elite transport...man this is a good marriage of components. I turned a small bedroom into a stereo room. Many times I fall a sleep in this room listening to everything for R&B to classical.

Strength:

Solid state at it's best. Powerful, smooth and natural sound in Class A.

Weakness:

None

This amp looks good, feels as solid as a rock and sounds altogether incredibly powerful and smooth. Normally you would expect to spend a lot of money for such a tonal quality. Thank's Yamaha for giving us this beast at an unbelievable low price! It's a real bargain. If you are searching for a power amp at a reasonable price, try to catch this one. I guess, you will not be disappointed. I am using this unit with a KLIMO Merlin tube preamp (excellent german product, comparable e.g. to Conrad Johnson PV12) which seems to be a lucky marriage. With my SONY XA-50ES - just waiting for my new Musical Fidelity A3/24 upsampling DAC :=) - and JAMO D 870 (concert 11) the soundstage is so wide, natural and dynamic that I'm always sorry when forced to switch the power knob off.

I've had this amp in my system for just over a year now and After a break in period of a few months I couldn't be happier with it's performance. It compares quite well with
other 200 watt+ power amps: (Parasound, Nad and Rotel). I'm not going to bad mouth these other amps because I enjoy listening to all of them. Indeed with this calibre of equipment it's not so much a matter of which one's better as it is "what is your favorite colour". The MX-1 delivers ample power and handles difficult speaker loads with ease due to its high current.( My Paradigm Reference Studio/100's
are a 6 ohms load but the impedance has been charted lower by some major audio Magazines.) the sound is effortless and never strained. All frequencies are reproduced faithfully and naturaly. This amp finesses every note it touches. It breaks ny heart to shut it off (which doesn't happen that often!)

Strength:

GREAT

Weakness:

NONE

IT HAS MORE DEPTH, MORE BASS, CLEANER, FULLER, BETTER VOICE REPRODUCTION THAN THE OTHERS I DEMO'D. IT WON OUT HANDS DOWN. UNFORTUNATELY, I ONLY JUST BORROWED IT FROM ADVANCE ELECTRONICS UNTIL THEIR LATEST AND GREATEST PARASOUND 5 CHANNEL GEAR COMES IN, IN 2 WEEKS. I DON'T KNOW IF I CAN GIVE BACK. $1500.00 CDN

Strength:

Hard to turn off; clean and controlled. Treble smooth but detailed. Bass delivery is hard to describe. Smooth but tactile?

Weakness:

Class A operation means it is expensive to leave on all the time.

This model has been around for a few years now. Why havn't the hifi mags tested it? (can any one let me know if they have a review?)

Never runs out of steam. Drives my Yamaha NS1000Ms no problem. (these speakers can be demanding with an impedance dip in the bass requiring a powerful amp to make the most of it). Once warmed up it tends to hold the temperature no matter how you hard you drive it. Sounds effortless and clean as the volume goes up, but remember the neighbours!
A peek under the bonnet shows some serious circuitry with two big transformers, all very good quality.
I have it teamed up with the CX1 pre amp which I also recommend.

Strength:

Awsome clean power, gold connectors, goods looks

Weakness:

With so many people going surround sound they don't sell any more.

After having my old Sansui for 25 years I thought it was time to get a new system. Going to a dozen audio stores and reading the reviews at this site I decided on getting one of these puppies. I checked out Adcom (ran hotter than a fry pan at Dennys, Parasound (not enought features and also ran hotter than August a day in Mojave) I decided to order one from Circut City. Two months later and no unit. They said it was dis-continued. I finally found one in the classifieds on this site. Good part was it was local so I got to hear it played with some B&W Nautilus speakers (which I don't own). Now for the good part. This amp is worth every penny of the $1200 they were selling for new. Let alone the $600 I paid used. I've heard other seperates costing 2-3 times as much and unless you have the sonic capabilites of a flying bat you won't here any difference. It drives the speakers perfectly from the lowest volume to
the highest. It makes the bass sound like it should and the highs are cleaner than a Safeway chicken! One it gets to operating tempature it stays right about there without any sort of nuclear type of heat that some of the others showed. Also the sound is warm and extremely tight at the same time. I am running 4 speakers at 4-ohms with the unit putting out 260w RMS in 4-ohms. The unit is heavy at 55 pounds. Using a seperate amp for each channel is a design feature I praise. This unit is a winner at all levels. If you can find one it would be a great day for your ears. This unit will be with me for along time.

I've been using this amplifier in my system for 4 months now, replacing my aging, but faithful A-700 integrated. No regrets. This amp has proven itself very capable in all areas. Low octave extension is deep and well controlled, mid and higher frequecies are warm but crisp, exhibiting impeccable detail. The dual transformers, direct signal path symmetry, and full Class A operation make it a very quiet performer. This amp has yet to display any hints of stress or strain as well as any signs of running overly hot. I tried other amps from Acurus, Rotel, and Adcom, but found this one prefferable. I don't know if the torroidial power supplies the other amps had in common is a factor, but they seemed leaner and weren't as smooth musically. Build quality is also impressive, and at 53 pounds, it is a beast. Yamaha's MX-1 is one sweet amplifier, and well worth an audition against any others in it's price range or even higher.
