I bought the Majik in a package deal with the Kelidh speakers several years ago when it first came out. I have to say that for the first 6 months to a year I was somewhat disappointed and felt I had made a mistake by trading in my Intek for the Majik just to get the convenience of the remote control. It was clear to me that the Majik sounded a bit underpowered compared to the Intek and while the bass was tight and well defined it seemed a bit light compared to the Intek. The highs also seemed a bit less sweet and musical than those provided by the Intek. And it seemed not to be able to give those liquid, "there, there" vocals in the midrange which had been characteristic of the Intek.
However, over the course of the past two years I have made several changes to my system which seem to have combined with the natural breaking in process in way that has left me thinking the Majik may well deserve the B class rating it has reeceived from Stereophile. First the changes. I have replaced my old NAD 5000 CD player with a Rega Planet. This resulted in dramatic improvements in soundstage, pace, musicality and definition offered by my system. It was now much easier to pick out individual instruments and voices in CD playback. I also added some Nordost Blue Heaven interconnects which I won from an Audio Review contest at this site. After break-in these also seemed to improve the sweetness and definition offered by my system. But prior to these changes I I replaced the original Linn Majik power cord with a new MIT power cable (I thnk it is the least expensive of their line). This change had a dramatic impact on the sound that came through the Majik. The soundstage became much deeper. The sound just became a lot cleaner and much better defined. The quiet passages seemed much quieter with the musical notes seeming to hang in within a black space. Voices were much more liquid and real sounding. In short, the improvement was dramatic.

I have toyed several times with the idea of upgrading my integrated to one of the better integrateds like those offered by YBA, Sim Audio, Naim, Audio Analogue or Audio Refinement. However, I have to say that the Majik has come out quite well in comparisons with those pieces, at least as it sounds in my system's current configuration. This suggests it can sound very good if matched with proper components and cables and is well broken in. Thus I give it five stars based on a value for money assessment and proper matching with harmonious components.
