Strength:
superb sound, just keeps astonishing me with the open effortlessness with which it seems to produce the music
Weakness:
a bit on the big side! I am now needing to buy new supports. What an incredible component. The M3 has elevated the performance of my system more than any other upgrade that I have ever made. It really is that simple. I have only ever heard one system as good and that was a money no object affair at a hi fi dealers in london (which I suspest on retrospect was playing SACD anyhow). Before the installation of this amp I had been considering new 'speakers but now the sound that I am getting really cannot justify spending such large sums (I would be suprised to get an appropriate increase in sound quality for anything like reasonable money). The only thorn in my side is that my dealer has a nu vista 3D CD player and if it is anywhere near as impressive as the amp then I had best start saving again! Dare I audition it in my system? Fantastic. |

Strength:
Sound and build. Relaxed attitude towards any sonic challenge. Tubes in audio circuit. Limited availability.
Weakness:
Cheap remote (OK, it does its job); cheap RCA input sockets are densely mounted (not good at all if most of the inputs are to be used AND most of your interconnects have oversized plugs). Great amp, great sound, immensely powerful if needed; works extremely well with MF's 3D CD player as source and Sonus Faber's Amati Homage speakers (cf. M. Fremer's review of it and of MF's 300W Nuvista monos). This amp is authoritative and subtle at the same time, and listening to a high quality recording may very well create that goosebump effect, that you've been missing for so long. Not-so-good recordings remain tolerable. Similar Products Used: Luxman L 530. |

Strength:
Sound quality, sheer unlimited power, build quality.
Weakness:
The speaker terminals are a bit too big for spades. No problem when you use bananas. Maybe the blue LED's are a bit too bright. Cheap remote control (but works good, anyway) I have the amp for 6 month now, and i'm still very happy with it. Fortunately (at least for my taste) here in germany the amp comes in silver/silver design, not with the known silver/gold faceplate. The german distributor requested the design change for the german market. The sound quality is very unspectacular in a very positive way. It needs a time to discover the great qualities of this amp, it's pretty 'neutral' sounding. And it has sheer unlimited power. You can listen to this amp for hours and hours, it never gets on your nerves. Built quality is like a tank, and it's VERY heavy! Be careful that your rack is strong enough! And btw., it's still easy to get replacement Nuvistor tubes, just in case they are needed one day. I got a spare set at 'Halfin' in Belgium, it seems they still have a lot of Nuvistors on stock. I use the amp with Dynaudio 'Countour 1.3SE' speakers, and a REL Stadium II sub-bass. I can highly recommend this amp! |

What more can I add that's not written before...? Well done Musical Fidelity!
Weakness:
Only 500 people can enjoy this archievement... There must be 499 other happy users out there..!?!?! Probably listening to an exceptional kind of ease in 'music reproduction' which keep them away from the computer, writing reviews... I am having second thoughts about selling my Nautilus 805's...The combination is stunning... QC problems? I had a (mostly) glowing review on this one last year. But to get the record straight here is the update. At the end of Audio Advisor''s generous 30-day audition period, I made a sad decision to return it. The amp still sounded as good as I described, but the forward mid/high and electrical hum from the speakers continued to bother me. After corresponding with another reader and owner that endured the same problems, we agreed that there seemed to be QC problems. He went through two exchanges with AA to finally got a normal working unit. I on ther other hand decided against such move due to uncertainty on the outcomes. And the truth is, I was just as happy to keep my original tube amp, although it is cheaper and not as exciting as this one. For sure I was much pickier with $4500 than with $2500. :-) Similar Products Used: C-J CAV-50 VAC Avatar Jeff Rowland Concentra Bryston B60 |

Weakness:
Phono stage (see above), and that darned remote control. My son has threatened to build me a new one, and I''ve half a mind to accept. I had seen all the hype (who could avoid it ?) and read all the reviews. The time was right to upgrade from my 20-year old Quad equipment, which was fabulous, so I went looking - or, rather, listening. The major advantage that the Quads have over most other equipment was that they sounded natural, and non-fatiguing. I could listen for hours without any hint of harshness. I was looking for an improvement over this - quite a tall order, but the MuFi M3 delivers in spades. Its bass definition and sound staging and separation are unbelievable. It brings each musical instrument out into its own space, and really restores the listening pleasure that I thought I was losing as I get older and deafer, and higher frequencies become more of a challenge. Must say a word about the unbelievable bass response. It''s working my 25-year-old Spendor BC1 speakers harder than they have ever worked, but has proved that those speakers have a richness that I hadn''t even dreamed about before. And the bass is controlled and not at all "boomy". The best part of having this equipment is that I want to sit down and listen to it at all hours of the day and night. It''s not always convenient, though !! It''s not perfect, though - the lack of any tone control is galling, especially after the intelligent ones used by Quad. Yes, I know that accurately reproduced music shouldn''t need correction, but sometimes the room ambience is less than perfect. And the phono stage should have an MC option - they include an MC stage in the far cheaper A3 and A300 range, why not on the top-of-the-line model ? Finally, the thought of spending that much money on an amplifier kept me from doing it earlier. And the thought of telling my wife how much it had cost kept me awake for nights on end. But the cost paled into insignificance when my wife heard it and said what an improvement it was, then went out clothes shopping ! Sound, power, build quality. I think it is beautiful.
Weakness:
Nada The M3 is ono of the most remarkable pieces of equipment I''ve ever heard. It has in spades - resolution, timing, pace, and bass control, but never any harshness. This amp has huge reserves of power when needed. It drives my Dynaudio Confidence 5''s with ease and they are a very power hungry speaker. I am simply amazed at how this integrated lets me forget about everything else and just get into the music. It never fails to illicit a foot tapping response from me. The included phono stage is very nice considering it has to be considered a free bonus at this price but if you are really serious about vinyl, you will probably want something else. Strength:
Absolute authority, absolute ease. I could get into speed, transparency, etc. but the first sentence explains it all...
Weakness:
Binding posts that don't fit any speaker cables spades in the industry (including Musical Fidelity's own!). This is one _OUTSTANDING_ amp! Actually, its even better than that - it's as close to being perfect as "damn it" is to swearing! |
